>Updates should be coming back around January
Do webcomic authors have the worst work ethic?
>>
something something muffet
>>
>>77430699
She's one person trying to fulfill all her kickstarter requests, I'm not even sure if AD is her full time job.

If you have to point fingers give a nice big middle one to the author of VG cats who literally takes so long his jokes lose their relevance upon release. Scott being busy designing overpriced t-shirts does not come before the main work.
>>
>>77430765
>I'm not even sure if AD is her full time job.
Pretty sure it is, but now she just goes to cons instead updating comic.
>>
>>77430796
How dare she promote her work in order to reach as much of an audience as possible. Fuck that cunt.

>>
>>77430949
Maybe she shouldn't promote a work she hasn't and doesn't plan to update for months.
It's not a feature film it's single page comic.
>>
>>77430765
>I'm not even sure if AD is her full time job.
>Got several hundred dollars on Kickstarter less than a year ago
>Gets 2000 bucks a month on patreon despite doing nothing

It's pretty much her job, she's just bad at working. Dozens of webcomic artists pull of kickstarters, go to cons, work on the side, and
still somehow manage to not take one year vacations from their comics.

I can think of her and the Pictures for Sad Children guy as examples of artists who just gave up making things after their Kickstarters. Anyone else have examples of Kickstarter meltdowns in the Webcomics scene?
>>
>>77430949
>Raises 350.000 $ on Kicstarter for her comic
>Shit, I need to hang out at cons more instead of making this comic, I just can't get by with the audience I have!
What the hell kind of lifestyle do you think she has that that kind of money isn't enough?

That would require her actually working.
>>
>>77430796
That's sort of indicative about how fly by fucking night this medium is.

I'm a creator, and I never want to go to cons because I know how much time will be bottlenecked by that obligation.
>>
>>77431283
How can cons possibly take up that much time?
>>
>>77431515
They don't. It's just an excuse.
>>
>>77430699
Yes. Homestuck update never ever.
>>
>>77431606
My ass it is.
Just going to a con for fun eats multiple days. Setting up a booth and shit is another thing entirely.
>>
>>77431606
Please read: >>77432297

I've been to one con. In my entire life. Just to walk around and shit. And the amount of time it took to prep for that was deceptive.
>>
>>77432326
Did you take a year off work to do that? As someone who actually does go to cons as a professional you'll have to approach the time it takes the same way as going on a vacation out of time. You pack your thing, book you flights and hotels, take a week off work. Once you're back home you're tired from all the experiences but you go back to work.

This woman is clearly not a professional, and if she squanders this opportunity she has built to work as a self-employed comic artist she'll have a hard time being hired in the field based on her work ethic.
>>
>>77432572
>Did you take a year off work to do that?
Y'know I think there's middleground between no time at all and a year.

Call me old fashioned.
>>
>I think I might take a break from conventions just to dedicate all my time to making the comic as much as possible.
genius idea!
>>
>>77432601
Yeah, it's called going back to work when you return from your trip. A philosophy that doesn't suit Michelle's work ethic.
>>
>>77432572
I'm not arguing that she's justified in everything she does, anon, just that going to cons to advertise takes a lot of time out of your schedule.
>>
>>77430949
Don't be fucking stupid, mate. Doing your comic is the best promotion. You could make a pretty penny and never have to show your face. Unless they are stupid attached people get offended by uneven schedules and constant hiatus.

She's not the only one that does this though. Just the most popular, currently. Too many artists are so fucking entitled they think they deserve to be paid for doing whatever they feel like. You see post after post of people complaining that being an artist doesn't pay the bills yet their comic is on month hiatus for the 5th time this year.

Yes, I'm glad you asked. I DO make a comic. 150+ pages a year. Full color. I do everything. I have a patreon and I still do commissions. So yes I know how much work it is and I'm glad for every cent I get. I work for it.
>>
Didn't she lose tens of thousands of dollars when Tumblr hacked her site?
>>
>>77433637
How would you lose money having a personal site hacked?
>>

>>
>>77433637
Hahahaha, no. This story keeps getting better every time it's rehashed on /co. She got dDosed by some randomer once, her host was shitty and charged her a few hundred extra for the excess traffic, she took the site down for a week while she switched to a decent host.
>>
>>77434545
I heard she lost $20k and they wiped 200 new pages she had finished but not posted.
sorry for her lots
>>
>>77434095
Hmm, looks like he did. Any information on what's going on there? His latest KS update from last month says he'd start sending out the rewards, but he's dead on social media and there's no word up on how that's going along. Has anyone started getting their books yet?
>>
>>77434588
They also snuck into her house and put laxatives in her husband's morning coffee.
>>
>>77434588

>>
>So where have I been?? Well this year has been extra busy, not only did I move from one apartment to another, I also got married, celebrated a new neice, got some bullies off my back, built a new computer to replace the brick I work on, and all on top of making the two books and all the art that will come with it. I've been super busy, basically. It's been hectic, to say the least.
>building a new computer
She spent a year building a computer.
>>
>>77433597
Are you Ashley?
Good work ethic at any rate. Very important.
It's okay to be a flake if you're running a free webcomic as a hobby, but when money's involved?
Michelle is still making a few thousand bucks every month from her Patreon, no? For doing almost jack shit. Amazing how devoted her fans are.
>>
I heard she married hussie?
>>
>>77434676
The telltale list of a "busy" person who realized that their excuses barely accounted for any of their time wasted so they just started throwing any arbitrary little thing in there to make it seem more fleshed out.
Built a computer and celebrated a niece indeed.

Michelle bit off more than she could chew with that insane amount of Kickstarter rewards. I once sent 24 poster packages to “Sandra and Woo” fans (for free). It took me ages and was overall one of the worst work-related experiences of my life. You begin to wish you could just throw the parcel away when you have to deal with the bizarre Japanese address system that doesn’t match up at all with the input fields of your pacel company’s online shop.

That said I don’t understand how you can take a months-long hiatus in her position. When you have such a surprise hit in your hands, you should do everything you can to keep it running. If not for the art’s sake, then at least for the money.

OP can die in a fire, though, for calling all webcomic authors lazy. I bet *he* doesn’t spend up to 4 hours on creative work every day after his normal day job.
>>
Depends on who you know about.
You can hate on Willis all you like, but you can't deny that he has a good work ethic (His DOA comic runs every day and has a buffer to February 23, 2016)

Seriously though with the Ava's Demon pic I meant it more as a dig at her and her similars aka authors who get financial compensation through kickstarter, etc and completely drop the ball when the comic is their day job.
>I once sent 24 poster packages to “Sandra and Woo” fans (for free). It took me ages and was overall one of the worst work-related experiences of my life
For a small number like 24 I get it could be annoying, but if you're doing a second kickstarter and can reasonably expect hundreds of thousands of fundraising and lots of backers the intelligent thing would be to arrange logistics and pay somebody to handle that sort of thing.

I have no sympathy for her.

>>

No, that ended a week or two ago.

I'd rather be on the continuously updating namek than the infinite hiatus namek.

Another point: Berserk has updated more in the past 6 months Ava's Demon.
>>
>>77435737
True, I guess in a world of absolute zero and infinity for webcomics it would be better to err on infinity but I kind of wish the story would move more forward to a singular end point instead of simply oozing in different directions.

Yes, that's great work ethic. Publishing two or even three colored pages when you write AND draw the comic is a truly admirable feat. I think Ashley of Unsounded is the greatest in this regard. She publishes 2.5 pages a week and they look so incredibly good.

I wish I weren't so lazy on some days so that I could slowly build up a buffer. I know that I should work harder, but it's so hard to do.
>>
>>77435695
Funny thing is that, in the time that Gunnerkrigg has taken to advance a major plotline it's foreshadowed for 10 years, alter it's status quo, introduce a new major character and give answers to a few mysteries it's teased for years, Ava's Demon has had Ava break out a box and grab a bad guy's face.

>>77436063
>advance a major plotline
That is debatable, Tony is uniqe in that he is largely independent of the Court and therefore isn't really necessary in a story that takes place in nothing but the Court and the status quo isn't really altered. Annie stood up to her father but it was concluded in a way that may as well have not happened and the story wouldn't have changed. Maybe the blinker stone being destroyed might be a plot point but the Donlans probably have spares.

Please tell me all about how you are working 168 hours a week at your current job.
>>
>>77430699
Not all of them. Minna Sundberg releases 5 pages a week, taking 1-2 weeks off between chapters.

When she had to send out a bunch of crowd-fundraised books, she reduced her pages to 4 a week.
>>
>>77437846
You know the funny thing is, Michelle is such a talented artist. If she wasn't trying to go with such grandiose art, she could pump out art at Gunnerkrigg Court, or any ordinary webcomic's level and probably put out atleast 5 pages daily. Double that if she stuck with black and white and colored special panels.
But she doesn't know how to work under her means so the pacing of her comic suffers.
>>
>>77439158
What the fuck are you talking about?
If she worked even a fraction of a 9-5 schedule she should have had at least one new page out after all these months.

She like may other artists has no ability to be self employed. She's just lucky it's not very competitive and there's hordes of dorks willing to throw money at people.

>>
>>77439049
Yes, when you're given 350.000 up front to do something decent people usually work on the thing they promised to make, not go live the good life with that money.

Her list of things that kept her from working were literally bogus reasons like "had to get a new computer" and "I got a niece!", it's not like she was hospitalized.

Thing is, Ava's Demon is only successful because of the art. Tom can get by with his level of hart for GC because his strength is in the writing.
But your point is still valid, Michelle could easily go back to the lower level of detail that she had in the beginning of the comic, people were already amazed by the art quality back then.

Eh, MC's average, like a 5 or 6.

She goes through hiatuses but when she actually does start producing updates, you get a pretty healthy amount of material on a pretty regular basis.

During the "Prudith" sequence we were getting something like 20-25 panels a week. That's a helluva lot of work.

>doesn't keep making comic
>>
>>77440281
I'll admit, I largely got into Ava's Demon initially because of how pretty the art looked. When it was becoming more and more obvious the story was moving at a super glacial pace, I decided to let it sit for a couple months and binge archive read it. After doing that, I felt the story was going nowhere -and at a glacial pace, too-, and I dropped it completely.

The fact it's been over 3 years and she's only now made the pact with Wrathia, and we still haven't met any of the other demons (outside of Gil's) doesn't give me much hope for this comic's pacing, much less the comic in general anymore.

She got 350K to make a book, prints, stickers, animation etc on a Kickstarter not continue free updates on a webcomic.

>Get's $350k to print a bunch of books and ship them to the people who donated for the project; create new art for backers, assist in a short animation for the comic, and create a bunch of other misc crap for backers

I still think there should have been SOME updates this year, but don't think that $350k is for paying for the comic instead of all the shit she wanted to create for the people that backed the comic.

Question was about work ethic, not income.
Or following the trend:

>Makes fans happy by making merchandise etc. for comic fans
>"Hey guys I'm getting back to work on the comic"
>lol artist are so lazy

Maybe if she had paused in a logical spot and stated that she would be focusing on backer rewards.
Instead she went dark and came up with lame excuses like building a new computer.
It's obvious she has poor time management and probably sat around a lot these past months not doing much aka poor work ethic.
In any other job she'd be out on the street with her current work rate.
>>
>>77444378

Im pretty sure this was obvious. If youre paid money to do a job, that becomes priority over any free stuff.

How about Unsounded?
Art has been amazing since day one and has only improved from there it always maintains it's schedule only taking breaks at the end of chapters or after dumping the amount of pages that would have been posted during that break first.

Don't forget the always irritating "over seas shipping rates" that are almost always higher than anticipated.
>>
>>77444834
Hell, even the domestic shipping rates were ridiculous during that first kickstarter.

Those books are heavy as FUCK and she had no idea of this fact until they were in-hand and by then it was far too late to do anything about it aside from eat the shipping costs herself. It's a pretty common issue with campaigns that involve physical goods in general.
>>
>>77444890
Didn't she also promise 3d printed metal keys? Those couldn't have been cheap.
>>
>>77439775
No.
>>77434730
If money is involved other than ads,not the users it's no longer a hobby. Just sayin. It might not be a full time job, but you're able to be taxed on it.

If you absolutely have to go on hiatus give a warning and an apology.

I go on vacation at least once a year for 2 weeks but I have such a long buffer my comic never stops.

Just have a freaking buffer. If you do one page a week, have 3 ahead.
>>
>>77445166
Yeah, the keys probably cost a pretty penny. She has cheaper options available on the store, but he real metal ones I think went for $50+.
>>
>>77445190
She was often doing 10 "pages" a week shortly before a bunch of drama started and the KS drew her attention away. I say "pages" because of how the comic is displayed on the site, a single image at a time instead of the more traditional paneled single image.
>>
>>77433597

>>
>>77444834
>>77444759
Has she ever gotten into detail over this? I think a collection of people's experiences with kickstarter (especially in regards to webcomics) could be useful.

That said, physical goods seem to be a pain to deal with.

Personally, I like it when an artist doesn't do revisions. Sometimes its really cool to see how far they've come by looking at prior work.

Also any time it takes away from an otherwise consistent or sane production schedule it's unwelcome.

>>
>>77449267
Most of the time it's uncalled for and usually ends up being worse than the original was. Something's always lost in the process. Sure the art might be better, but the joke/meaning is now flat, or the composition is boring, or the cute clever thing readers noticed is painfully obvious and no longer cute nor clever, etc....

Minor adjustments I can understand, especially when you're publishing a book.
>>77450055
As as this anon said, I enjoy to see the progress of how far an artist has come. As well as taking time away from progressing the story and instead redoing things that were perfectly well drawn pages from five years ago. I'd rather have new content than "touched up" pages I've already read twice. I'm looking at you right now, Off-White

No, she didn't have a baby, she got married

No, Tumblr hackers didn't steal 100k from her bank account, in fact no account has been hacked and no money stolen.
