The writers have even admitted this, sometimes they have nothing to say they're just seeing what they can get away with. If people give them an award or think it's clever they go on to make fun of that and mock them for it.

Two weeks ago they had an episode about yaoi where asian students at the school were obsessed with shipping tweek and craig. This season has been all about south park the town becoming socially progressive so the town is super supportive of tweek and craig and giving them money and stuff despite the fact that they're not actually gay with each other. They try to fake a breakup but it backfires and makes craig look like an asshole so they decide to pretend to be together since it makes the town happy
Scattered throughout the episode are scenes where the two boys legitimately care for each other and tweek trying to put two lego bricks together by pressing the stud sides together. episode ends with them still together and cartman makes a joke about them fucking in this newest episode (which is the first one after it)
Tweek shows signs of possibly being actually gay, craig's just doing it because he's pressured into it.at least for now

The first couple of seasons feel very novel and charming, but a bit rough around the edges. They showed a lot of promise, but hadn't really hit the sweet spot yet.
Seasons 3-8 were absolutely God-tier. One brilliant episode after one another, with just a few exceptions. Hilarious and surprisingly comfy. I miss when Lemmiwinks wasn't tired and overused, but actually genuinely random and inspired.
The seasons that followed were pretty good, but a significant downgrade, each season less interesting than the last.
I feel that season 14 is were they started to completely run out of steam. It felt like they were really phoning it in at this point.
Obama Wins was where I gave up. That episode was fucking unwatchable.

To me Casa Bonita is the perfect episode when it comes to comedy but I also like the more "serious" episodes that focus on characters like You're Getting Old and Ass Burgers. Basically when it mixes that and comedy it's the best for me so I've really enjoyed last couple of episodes.
