So she's had cancer for about 2 years now. I care less about the fact that she has cancer and more that 1. Becoming Thor is some sort of magic recreation for her that she'll blow off chemo for and 2. I'd hope they would treat this type of thing realistically. She can't stay a cancer patient forever. She's either going to die of it, or have it go in to remission. How about instead of wiki'ing shit, you actually go read it. Eric Masterson's stint as Thor is great and proves that a Thor legacy can be done well. The Thor Corps was a fantastic arc and Eric's Titania/Absorbing Man issue blows Janes out of the fucking water.
Within the context of the actual comic, and not a shitty wiki summary written by someone who may not have even read the original run, it is very much framed as "Thor Odinson is gone, Eric takes over as the new Thor."
What happens in the comic:
Thor gets banished Eric takes umbrage with this and uses Mjolnir to become the new Thor as he tries to find and save Thor Odinson. It is later revealed that the place Thor was banished to was basically a pocket dimension inside Eric.
In practice, it worked the same way as Jane is now though. Eric picks up Mjolnir, gaining Thor's powers and a similar (but not exactly the same) look, and calls himself Thor while in this form. Despite this, Eric maintains his own thoughts while in his Thor form, so his thoughts and actions are still Eric's. Same as with Jane.
Casuals love to bitch about Aaron's Thor, but they insist on bitching about the dumbest shit. Thor isn't a title it's a name? No, it's both, and always has been. Hell, during Simonson's run, Odin would refer to Beta Ray Bill as Beta Ray Thor while he was in his stormbreaker/mjolnir empowered form and would call him Beta Ray Bill while he was in his non-powered form. Multiple alt-universes and alt-futures would have whoever lifts Mjolnir call themselves Thor despite not literally being Thor. Even the silver age Thor operated like this.
The problem with Aaron's Thor isn't that it contradicts prior canon. It doesn't. Far from it. The problem with it is that it shamelessly rips-off other Thor runs and just repackages them.
Go compare Jurgens' run and Thor: GoT, or Jane Thor with Eric Thor. Sure they're not one-for-one, but the similarities between them are pretty fucking glaring.

Jane was made Midgard's representative on the Council of Realms. The Council of Realms is in Asgardia. Asgardia was at the blue area of the moon at the time where mjolnir was located. The Blue Area of the Moon has Earth-like atmosphere with lower gravity.
