Recap of who Vision is and his status quo.

Waid had him wipe his emotions in that Avengers 0 issue

So Vision basically can't cry now, if you wanna know how bad it is

Not a 3x3 grid, disappointing King.

Fall is showing change as a motif right at the start. There's a lot of that in this first page supporting that, you can't plan life stuff. The omniscient narration is at odds though because it makes this sound so routine. That juxtaposition is core to the book. Robotic and chaotic. Also totally talking about Viz.

616 is obviously a reference to pre Secret Wars numbering. I think the rest is from Tom King's life in DC.

Is anyone in Vision's past associated with the color purple? Grim Reaper i think can be ruled out

First speaking characters. Two different sides of how people look at Vision. Narrator knows some background on them, Nora reads digitally which might mean something.

We learn the Avengers don't like what Vision's doing and now he's working in the White House.

The toaster thing is a reference to Byrne who ruined Vision and Wanda.

Pointing out how similar the family is right off the bat, with the repeated dialog and twins.

Vision standing in the couch, casual use of powers is always great.

Buncha stuff from the Avengers. A stringless piano. Nora's off put by the vase. The only significance I can think of for the lighter is Human Torch in WW2 but it's a gift from Cap. History, the original Human Torch was an android who was used a little in creating Vision.

Look at Virginia in the last panel. That's what I'm talking about with the art. Wanda's gift is also the one that's alive and doing something, Everbloom.

More on the Everbloom, it can unlock time?

Do you think we'll ever see Hepzibah on Mercury?

So they're both offput by visiting, Nora's not defending Vision like before.

Forgot to bring up, the narrator calling everyone by titles/nouns.

Then big sting where you realize this is doing some kind of twist on a superhero comic. great beat.

The cookies were wasted.

And Vision's a dick. I love this semantic argument. Vision gets that saying "they seem kind" is off but without emotions can't be nice about it or explain why.

That second panel is killing me. "The Vision of my creator" irony. Vision can't explain the American Dream to Virginia, but they're in DC. Take a weekend, the kid's'll love it.

Vision totally just named her Virginia because he drove through the state didn't he.

Mr President that's kinda messed up? Maybe in text you lose the tact. Vision needing money besides being a classic superhero thing reminds me of how often Presidents or other public figures would end up spending all their money campaigning and ultimately barely having actual cash.

Even an android can cry. Whoever Virginia is based on had a rough life. The vase is prominent.

Kids love computers. Viv punching a staircase is fun wordplay/playing with powers. Merchant of Venice getting a nod.

They sleep in separate beds! Best nod to the 50s style sitcoms.

Vision was scared when he saw Virginia first wake up/come to life and this makes him think about whoever he took the brainwaves from. Vision pushes it away as a glitch though.

also the narrator doesn't know as much about the kids as Viz and Virginia. Once they leave the house it doesn't know what's really happening.
>>
>>77413849
Nora and George are both described by using small details that make them unique from other people. These little personal quirks (hot wings and reading) inform George and Nora's personalities and are part of what Vision is trying to give his family by building them a "normal" life.

Is family Vision's self-engineered quirk? These scenes will probably take on a whole other dimension when we discover who the narrator is

Vision aspires towards apathy. He judges humanity based on what most people are, without taking into account the optimistic nature of humanity.

He is clearly controlling of his wife and perhaps sees his family more as extensions of himself than independent beings

Shylock reinforces the theme of being judged based on preconceived notions, like George did to Nora.

As the twins argument suggests it's tough to know how to feel towards Shylock, who is definitely the villain of merchant of Venice.

Will one twin defy expectations while the other succumbs to them?
>>
>>77414379
Vision is just willing going through the motions. He hopes to assimilate his family into human culture, while seeming disdainful of human culture at the same time.

Virginia is definitely the more human of the two.
>>
>>77414418
Getting a real miracleman vibe, why should gods pretend to be anything but what they are?
>>
>>77414730
The vase is obviously Virginia. Made to have feelings but unable to properly express or understand them. Maybe this is because of who she got her brainwaves from or because Vision refuses to help her (probably both)

This is why he feels dread; she is a failed creation, forever doomed by his incompetence
>>
>>77415635
Sorry meant George did to the Visions
>>
>>77415673
It's not so much that he is disdainful of human culture, it's that he assumes a very binary definition of what it means to be human. Look at >>77414161, his definition of freedom, and by extension humanity, hinges entirely on an oppositional comparison. He's made the mistake of assuming that if life is meaningless then one's actions inherently lack meaning. This is reinforced by the narration about the vase. It assumes that the only point of a vase is to hold flowers.

It also reminds the audience that Vision is just as artificial as his family, his personality is based on be brain waves from Wonder Man (Simon Williams)
>>
>>77416143
Perhaps disdain is the wrong word. He has a very clinical interpretation of humanity and views things we would think are negative traits as essentials that his family should strive for, ex. The kind vs nice conversation where Vision promotes superficiality.

>>
>>77413849
Perhaps the digital thing establishes Nora as more open minded and Geroge as someone who enjoys things the old way and isn't too much accustomed to change.
>>
>>77413672
Just some general thoughts:

The vase references the visions themselves. Vision made extraordinary beings in order to live mundane lives. Like the vase, the Visions cannot do what they were created for. Even Vision himself is pretending, his house feels more than an avengers museum than a typical family home.

Vision has an interesting dynamic with his family. Even though he and Virginia act as parents to the twins, he is also the creator and therefore "father" of Virginia. Even though Vision and Virginia are supposed to be equals this is clearly not the case. Seems to suggest an Adam and Eve relationship, which would make the twins Cain and Abel

>>77416143
I thought the narration of the vase was a metaphor. The vase represents the Visions and how they can't hold life.
>>
>>77416567
Marvel apparently has faith in it. They sent retailers shipments of issue #2 for free.
>>
>>77416143
>it assumes that the only point of a vase is to hold flowers

I agree. This is the key here, especially in conjunction with the speech about facts needing to find their place or become useless.

The Visions can't fit in and feel anxiety as a result. But their difference is what defines them. It would be silly to put flowers in that vase, but it makes perfect sense to display it as a thing of beauty. Vision is making the mistake of forcing his family (and himself) to be something that they are not by encouraging them towards normalcy
>>
>>77414379
What an asshole.
>>
>>77414730
She is so utterly screwed. Robots, sentient or otherwise, have even fewer rights than Mutants in the Marvel Universe. Kamala Khan, one of the sweetest characters out there right now who would take the side of an innocent rampaging monster in a heartbeat, has no problem killing robots.

They might think they're Pinocchio, but all everyone else is going to see is Skynet, AM, GLaDOS, and the other psycho synthetics.
>>
>>77420444
>Vision is making the mistake of forcing his family (and himself) to be something that they are not by encouraging them towards normalcy

Well he says that they're free to do what he want, it's just that he hasn't bothered to teach them anything. That would be forcing his ideals on them. Which is a Pym or Ultron thing to do. Therefore it's bad and he shouldn't do it. Just give them access to the internet and they can ask google what they want to know.
>>
>>77422028
He wants to allow them to do what they want, but within set parameters (such as going to school, being his family). Which I suppose is what a parent does
>>
Vision doesn't seem like an asshole to me. He's not malicious. He's just honest and direct.
>>
>>77421981

Reminder bigots burned down his and Wanda's place in Jersey
>>
>>77413937
>Wanda's gift is also the one that's alive and doing something, Everbloom.

Ah, Wanda. Does Wanda know what Vision is doing? Its implied the Avengers sort of do.

Well spotted metaphor (or Ted Maul's version "metaphur"...now I am imagining Ted Maul doing a news report on the Visions..."a quazi-family like some sort of robotic gimp club, this Vision is a kind of pristine hellscape like Jonathan Ives on crack in an Ikea store!")
>>
>>77414730

I want to think about the vase more, I like the idea that an earlier anon said about Virginia and emotions but I feel like the vase may be a metaphor for the synthezoids/sentient robots as a whole. They're made to be just like humans, but aren't actually and never will be humans.

Nora leaving the house looking unsettled, wondering why the vase didn't have any water, was an allusion to her meeting the Visions and realizing that they're not quite human.

"Methanic sulfite" calls to mind something artificial and unnatural, the idea that it's poisonous to flowers insinuates that it and nature are fundamentally opposed. The metaphor could be drawn to the Visions and their humanity, or lack thereof.

I also think there's something to the vase levitating; it's impressive, seemingly far more than an ordinary vase, seemingly miraculous except for the fact that it fails at what the perceived purpose of a vase is.

I also like how the narrator's text box "The mystery is then..." is juxtaposed with Virginia telling the children not tell Vision. Her expressive face + the statement that could only come from an emotional concern clashes with the idea that she isn't truly human, symbolized by the metaphor of the vase.

Loved the thread, I wish we had more close readings of comics. They're fun.
