i think it's more how difficult it is to think in 3d
like when you design a merdwelling.. what is it even sheltering them from? does it need a roof? where should the doors open to? how do you design a society that can move in full 3d like that? For that matter, isn't the ocean floor just the worst possible place for them? shouldn't they live in a big suspended floating city, tethered via a combination of ground anchors and surface floats? Somewhere in the lower-pressure higher-temperature area with plenty of fish to eat? I mean there's shallower seas with lots of vegetation but in the grand scheme those are rare

Not that hard to think about, since you literally just did.

>like when you design a merdwelling.. what is it even sheltering them from? does it need a roof?
It protects them from random stuff floating about, provides a private living facility, and is a secure place to sleep at night.

>how do you design a society that can move in full 3d like that?
That's not remotely a problem. They just don't need stairs. They'd probably need elevators though, to get the particularly heavy stuff up and down.

Also not a problem. If they managed to build all this shit, they probably understand and utilize the concept of farms.

I'm probably putting too much thought into cartoons, but it always bothered me that no one explains how mermaids have anything beyond stone-age technology. You need extreme heat to manipulate metal, which is pretty important for advancing technology. Humans created this extreme heat with fire, which mermaids obviously can't use. You could use thermal vents, but those only occur in extreme environments, so unless the mermaids are equipped to do some deep-sea diving, then they're out of luck. Of course, even if they could, they would have to make sure that the metals they were working with couldn't oxidize, as salt water causes oxidization to happen much faster.
>>
>>77416183
hmm yeah that makes sense. okay so the doors would logically have gates because any aperture a merdude can fit through, a tiger shark could easily.
and maybe.. though i doubt it.. they could also want to actually close doors entirely, so various plankton and random stray fish and shit couldnt get in. Maybe for temperature protection (but you never see them put on coats).. but you also have to have enough flow for oxygen to get in
>>
>>77416257
the sisters were in everything
>>77416280
why would they need privacy?
farms though, that is interesting. aquaculture. so they'd still need to be in the zone with some light in it
>>
>>77416671
i just figured it was all done with hammering. you can hammer out basic cruddy metal tools
otherwise yeah youd need better heat for the rest.. and yeah thermal vents would probably kill you if you got near em. BUT maybe with protective suits, which wouldn't necessarily require anything super special..
or just yknow, fantasy universe. fantasy metal, fantasy heat source, fantasy protective gear. you only need one. I think you don't need to get that realistic when it comes to magical hybrids. more for like, something meant to possibly be a legit natural creation like gillmen
>>
>>77416768
>Why would they need privacy?
For the exact same reason you do.
>>
>>77416793
I just can't see an entire civilization adopting the practice of smashing metals into tools. It just seems too inefficient.
So yeah, fantasy explanation is probably the best.
>>
>>77416856
You could create a society that has no concept of privacy.

>>77416890
I suppose you could, but unless you're a retarded teenager who browses 4chan, there's no reason to do so.
>>
>>77416768
Yes, but only in the prequel are main character and with different design.
>>
>>77416871
yeah and i guess it would be even MORE inefficient underwater
I feel like the isolationism is the main issue. Mermaids can breathe air, they can survive surface pressure without exploding, i guarantee at some point in their history they had regular surface contact.. they built fires on land, they traded things with humans and THEIR metalworkers, they shared oceanic treasures, that kinda shit. The only thing that doesn't work is mermaids somehow being the union of men and fish, then forming a society with NO exposure to surface conditions.
>>

I don't

They have a lot of different sorta fishy people. Ningyo are good guys, they're basically ponyo. Samebito will eat your fucking face though. Basically those shark guys in the little mermaid series, but more svelte. my favorite is shojo though. they're just underwater humanoids, but they're basically fucking hippies that brew magic sake and get really high on it.

>that's a good way to suffocate and pollute the fuck out of your water, m8. definitely surface.
Also because of this. If you're going to perform surface operations, it might help to actually be able to move up there. Traditional mermaids never sat well with me.

Chris Sanders's mermaid book project has a good take on it. Mermaids run on Splash rules of having legs while on dry land, but they can only go for like three days without soaking their tails. Humans are just mermaids who got stuck on dry land. The book revolves around a human who discovers she has latent genetic ability to become a mermaid when becoming a lifeguard in Miami and is subsequently taken in by a group of mermaid lifeguards.
>>
>>77416132
>Somewhere in the lower-pressure higher-temperature area with plenty of fish to eat
I imagine mermaids would build a big spiraling, almost tedious staircase/tunnel that they use if they want to go to shallower/deeper parts of the ocean, so that they don't accidentally hurt themself from the drastic change in pressure if they just dove in a straight line

well my mermaids and a lot of the ones in books i read have the innate ability to shapeshift to human (and presumably fish) mode, with varying levels of comfort, success, speed, and liability. it's just part of being a crossbreed.

>The level-headed animal lover, Nim is the leader of the Rescue Sirens in Miami. She has beachy blonde hair, gray eyes, and tan skin with freckles; in her mermaid form, she has a "classic" mermaid tail with broad swept-back flukes, blue as the ocean in the morning.

>Nim takes her job as a Rescue Siren very seriously, and she feels a deep kinship with the humans she’s charged to protect. Like many mermaids, Nim’s curious about the human world and everything in it, and she has a particular interest in anything old: black-and-white movies, record players, antique books, brightly-colored dresses from the 1950s, fountain pens. In fact, Nim has a collection of ink pens and a stockpile of stationery and envelopes, but she doesn’t have anyone to write to on land. Sometimes, she writes to herself just to get a letter in the mail. Her handwriting is messy by human standards, but it’s pretty good for a mermaid, keeping in mind that merfolk don’t usually communicate using the written word.

>Nim's mother, Clymene, is the head of the tribal council in the local mermaid community, Lophelia, and Nim naturally feels the need to live up to her mom's legacy. She does her best to look after the other Rescue Sirens, and to make sure they're all happy and doing the best they can at their job, but she's still growing up, herself, so juggling all of her responsibilities can get tough. Add to that the fact that Nim and Echo have been known to bump heads, especially over matters of leadership, and it can be a challenge for Nim to work side-by-side with Echo at the Miami Beach lifeguarding stand to which they're both assigned.

>As an only child, Nim jokes that she grew up with pets instead of siblings, and she has a special affinity for animals above and beyond that of most mermaids. She'll always go out of her way to help a creature in need, and Nim makes an extra effort to teach humans about marine life and how to coexist with all the ocean's beings.

>The shy tomboy of the group, Kelia B. Cortez — "Kelby" to her friends — is the new gill in Miami. She has curly dark brown hair, big brown eyes behind a pair of reading glasses, and caramel-colored skin; in her mermaid form, her tail resembles that of a tiger shark, a beautiful dusty rose in color.

>Kelby is revealed to be an Atavist, a rare genetic throwback who grew up as a human but discovered her ability to "turn tail" after moving from Arizona to Miami Beach and meeting the Rescue Sirens. Sporty and tomboyish but unsure of herself, Kelby’s shy around the other girls, and she's still very much getting the hang of this whole "mermaid" thing.

>Despite growing up in a landlocked state, Kelby was always drawn to the water, and the only time she felt truly comfortable in Arizona was when she was doing laps in the pool. In her new form, she's gaining confidence, and she's teaching the mermaids as much about being a human as she is learning about being a mermaid — something Kelby secretly delights in, since she was never particularly popular or influential in her life back west. She's the only one of the Rescue Sirens who owns a car (a beat-up old Hyundai Tiburon), a cell phone, and a computer, so she becomes a main source of the Sirens' knowledge of human culture.

>Kelby lifeguards at the local water park, where she stashes her surfboard after her morning surf session and before her evening fix. She reads a ton of true crime novels and shares Pippa’s macabre fascination with horror movies, but Kelby’s real love is marine biology, which she studies at South Florida University.

>The tough girl with a chip on her shoulder, Echo is the strongest, fastest, and most athletic of the Rescue Sirens. She wears her purple hair in a ponytail, and has almond-shaped blue eyes and light skin; in her mermaid form, she sports the powerful tail of a blue marlin.

>By far the most physically gifted of the girls, Echo oddly doesn't appear to get much joy out of that fact. She doesn’t care much for humans and resents being obligated to rescue them when they put themselves in harm's way, but she can't help but do an outstanding job when she's called on to respond to an emergency. Echo shows up late to work and sneaks out early; regardless, she's the lifeguard that you want on duty if something goes wrong, and she makes a solid second-in-command for Nim… when Echo isn’t trying to challenge her for leadership, anyway. Echo is stationed on the beach with Nim because Clymene, Nim's mother and the leader of their undersea community's tribal council, recognizes that Echo needs an eye kept on her, and Clymene hopes that Nim will be a good influence on a talented but troubled mermaid.

>Echo feels very strongly about environmental issues, but she doesn't channel her passion in positive ways like Nim does; Echo’s been known to blow her top at people who leave their trash on the beach or feed potato chips to sea gulls. She's smaller than everyone except Pippa, so Echo has a bit of "short girl syndrome" going on, as well, and she feels a constant need to prove herself.
>>

>she sports the powerful tail of a blue marlin.

>>
>>77418342
>Not surprisingly, Echo’s favorite thing to do is working out, whether above water or below. She loves watching sports on TV and longs to learn to ride a bicycle, but she doesn’t want the other girls to see her doing anything that she isn’t already good at because it’s so important to Echo to maintain her competent image. Outwardly confident and frequently sarcastic, secretly, Echo is very superstitious, and she's scared to death of ghosts. Rather than admitting to her fear, instead, Echo finds convenient excuses to avoid Pippa’s late-night horror movie marathons.

>The bubbly girly-girl, Pippa wears her black hair in braided pigtails and has violet eyes and coffee-colored skin; in her mermaid form, she has the tail of an extinct Caribbean monk seal.

>Sweet, positive, and very glass-half-full, Pippa is more enchanted with the human world than any of the other mermaids. She especially loves anything New Age: horoscopes, psychics, crystals, feng shui, séances, spell-casting... you name it, and she's probably tried it. Pippa wants to believe in everything and everybody, which makes her endearing, but she also comes off as a little naïve sometimes, even if she means well. She has a ton of enthusiasm, though, and she loves her friends fiercely. Pippa is the kind of girl who would spring a makeover on you before you had a chance to object, and, even if it turned out terribly, you couldn't get mad or say anything negative because Pippa would just be so happy to "help" you and you wouldn't want to hurt her feelings. She's an open book and wants to be everyone's best friend.

>Pippa loves board games, 1970s TV shows, salt and pepper shakers, glitter stickers, staying up too late, feeding animals, painting her toenails, and any recording artist that had no more than one hit. She has three Barbie dolls that she hides when Maris comes to find her Juice Newton and John Denver tapes. Pippa is at ease with machinery, both repairing it and operating it; of all the girls, she's the best on a jet-ski, and she keeps the fleet running at peak performance. Pippa frequents Offshore Flo's All-Night Diner, where the legendarily bad coffee keeps her happily caffeinated.

>Pippa thinks humans are fintastic (she refers to them delightedly as "leggies"), and she especially loves children, which is fortunate because she's stationed at a public pool that's crawling with kids. When she’s not lifeguarding, Pippa watches a lot of TV — enjoying the commercials every bit as much as the programs, since she may not actually realize that there’s a difference — and she has a special fondness for horror movies of all kinds.

>Materialistic social climber Maris looks, as a human, just like one of the willowy models from Miami's famous Fashion District. Her hair, cut in a stylish bob, is a striking white that’s complemented well by her green eyes and pale skin; in her mermaid form, she has the striped tail of a common dolphin.

>Maris comes from old money… really old. Several hundred years ago, her grandfather had a lengthy romance with a lady pirate and used to "clean up" after the shipwrecks resulting from inevitable battles at sea, and the treasure collection that Maris’s family has amassed is truly impressive. Thus, Maris is accustomed to a certain level of status and privilege. She expects that status to extend to the dry realm, but Nim keeps a tight rein on her; otherwise, Maris might suddenly show up at Coastal Eddie's marine antiques shop with an emerald and gold cross worthy of a place in a museum and worth a king's ransom — enough to finance a resort of Maris’s very own on South Beach, and the polar opposite of "inconspicuous."

>Frustrated with what she sees as a suffocating limitation on her lifestyle, Maris constantly looks for other ways to enhance her position. In the human world, she's observed, wealth and adoration are awarded to celebrities, and she has a subscription to every glossy fashion mag and trashy gossip rag on the market to learn as much as she can about America's modern-day royals. She consumes and retains an enormous amount of perishable information but is constantly surprised by the weather. Maris also threatens to get a scooter license, which the other girls know is just so she can wear a helmet painted robin’s egg blue.

>Despite being rather unenthusiastic about working (like some sort of peasant!), Maris probably clocks in more guard time than any of the other girls because she needs to feed her new-found addiction: designer shoes. You can't wedge a fluke into a Louboutin or a Manolo Blahnik, so she's making the most of her time on land by buying and parading around in as many outrageously expensive shoes as she can afford. Maris's job as a lifeguard at one of the swanky beachside hotels affords her the opportunity to rub elbows with the rich and famous, and she'd like nothing more than to get out of that disgraceful motel that she and the other Rescue Sirens live in and move up in the world. Maris is always asking to move farther away from Pippa, whose hyperactive antics give Maris a headache.

i mean i guess some of them are like.. fishtaurs.. which makes sense. you have to play fast and loose with anatomy for this kind of thing, but.....
for that matter, who likes mertaurs? i know i do. waist up of a human, front legs and shoulders of horse, bit of horse ribcage, then fishtail. you can imagine the tail helping the legs balance, and the legs folding up nicely for swimming.. basically i guess if a human fucked a hippocampus, or mermaid and a horse.. kelpie or summat.

>little mermaid had friends
I thought she was segregated from other (mer)people by her over-protected father and found comfort in items that dropped off of ships.
It's been a long time since I've seen the movie so I'm probably wrong.

nah she was just not a joiner. her sisters were all boring-ass girly girls content with combing their hair and shit. ariel wanted to learn more, basically Belle. she was segregated from HUMANS by her overprotective father

it's funny how these systems come up in fiction a lot. the only reason it would be dangerous to contact humans is that mermaids are seen as fictional, and thus something to dissect. if they had remained near us, they wouldn't be.

Yeah I was thinking about that myself just now. If only there were a good way to combine all the best qualities of a mermaid and a centaur.
