Is Marvel's EPIC Collection line currently the best and cheapest way to collect older stories?
>>

ehh

Yeah, but who really wants to pay for all that printer paper.
>>
>>77398085
Yes the bag for your buck, especially if you buy online and not msrp, is incredible
>>
>>77398085
The cheapest would be those coloring books known as essentials
>>
>>77398833
>bag for your buck

Bang for your buck.
The saying is More BANG for your buck.
>>
>>77399075

Is the Essential line dead now?

I read that the Epic collection has atleast 20 volumes planned already for each character.
>>
>>77399075
Hey, there's some definite benefit to black-and-white lineart for a lot of old comics. Some of the stuff honestly could even be said to look better in that format, like Buscema's silver surfer work.

fuck off disney shill

are you really this dense?

Essential line has not been officially cancelled but it's pretty much dead at this point.

Most have reached "natural" ending points (AMS ends with "Boy Who Collected Spider-Man" #248, X-Men and X-Factor got to the point of the 91 relaunch/last Claremont story, Avengers a couple of issues shy of the infamous "Hanl slaps Jan" story)

Most have hit points for where they can segway to color reprints and omnibuses.

There are a couple of books though that could benefit for reviving the Essential line though: New Mutants, Alpha Flight, Power Pack, West Coast Avengers, (would probably sell better than their colorized TPBs but would let them add shit omitted from the color TPBs) and some 90s stuff (GOTG, New Mutants, Darkhawk, Deathlock). As well as books that are incomplete and will probably not continue in color (Doctor Strange, X-Factor, Defenders)

They just got done collecting the ENTIRE Stern run in color though. Plus Trial of Yellowjacket too was given a masive color TPB (which sadly is now OOP).

Aside from a string of filler issues (#205-210, which are generally reviled by Avengers fans) and the all reprint Annuals (#3-6 IIRC), Avengers #1-293 have been reprinted in consecutive TPBs, over different formats.
>>
These books are great. I mean, I've got the Moon Knight and Iron Fist ones, but I've been meaning to look into others.

I really wish DC would do something like this for characters like Doctor Fate, Ragman, The Spectre etc..
>>
>>77402326
New Mutants and Alpha Flight actually make sense for Essentials.

The only thing keeping Strange from getting more TPBs is that they reprinted V2 #68-81 and Strange Tales V2 in color and will not want to reviste them until they fall out of print. Maybe for the movie, they can do a huge volume to finish V2 out so they can then move onto collecting the 90s series.

But yeah, I really fucking hope we can get at least the last Captain Marvel and Defenders Essential TPBs out. Especially since the last Defenders trade fucked us over by reprinting like 12 issues of the actual comic and then three four issue minis that started Iceman, Beast, and Gargoyle that had nothing to do with the series.
>>
>>77402326
>>77402637
>Doctor Strange

Yeah. That's why I excited for the movie. I hoping that they will reprint/digital versions come out due to the movie.
>>
>Wolverine gets an Epic Collection
>it starts with Madripoor Nights and not his first appearances
Explain this bullshit
>>
>>77402745

Are you unaware that the Epic Collections don't release in order?

It's suppose to be like some big planned out puzzle of atleast 20 volumes for the big characters (probably not Wolverine) and they just jump around until they fill in all the gaps.
>>
>>77402611
DC is fucked in that they have iron clad royalty rates for everything published from 1976-1997 that they are too fucking cheap to pay out. So creators have to agree to a cut in royalties and even then, it has to get enough pre-orders to justify reprinting.

It's why Suicide Squad kept getting fucked over when they attempted to reprint it and why they won't reprint any additional Ostrander Spectre TPBs or a wide variety of other books.
>>
Are people really THAT poor that you can't save up 70-90 bucks for an omnibus? I don't get it do you all work at McDonald's?
>>
>>77399075
I want to buy some essentials for the sole purpose of coloring
>>
>>77402859

I actually prefer my collection to be non hardcover because I like them all to match.
>>
>>77402745
IIRC it was released as part of the 75th Anniversary push Marvel did last year, where they released volume 1s for their biggest stars.

Wolverine and Silver Surfer got lucky in that their first volumes were their very first Epic TPBs, due to them being released as part of that 75th Anniversary event.
>>
>>77402859
>working
look at this fag
>>
>>77402859
Most omnibuses are fucking OOP. And not everyone has $75-125 to throw down for a book.
>>
>>77402972
Ok that IS a fair point. I just have different shelf spaces for hardcovers.

>>77402990
Hi underage faggot. Call me when your parents kick you out and you want to sue them over some alimony.
>>
>>77403125
Calm down anon, can't take a joke?
>>
>>77403099
This.

Omnibuses are basically the high end luxuary item of the TPB world. Essentials are cheaper and give you the same bang for your buck, same with Epic TPBs.

It also helps that the Epics/Essentials have more available material for you to read than the Omnibus line does.
>>
>>77403157
It's all good I was joking as well, I don't even practice law in the States anyways.

Still, my point stands, if you have a hobby you should be able to save up some money and invest in it, right?

You buy collected comics to HAVE THEM in your shelf. Buying a cheap version just seems halfhearted when you could buy the verified best format. If you only wanted to read the comic you could just download them.
>>
>>77402816
>>77402982
No, his Volume 1 starts with Madripoor Nights is what I'm talking about
>>
>>77403336
Except the omnibuses AREN'T the best versions.

Some like the Simonson Thor omnibus has shitty recoloring and omit material that should be included.
>>
>>77403416

What a terrible screw up. I'm never buying the Wolverine Epic Collection now.
>>
>>77398110
>torrenting comics

seriously?

download dc++ and join comicshack

you're welcome.
>>
>>77403519
Find me a better way to collect 60s Marvel runs.
>>
>>77399227
Clam down bro, for all intensive purposes it's the sane thing.
>>
>>77403918
Or join soulseek.
>>
>>77404789
I see what you did there
>>
>>77402859

Can you get omnibuses that jump from, say, X-Men to New Mutants when that's how the story goes? No? Then shut the fuck up.
>>
>>77405014
Not him but lately some omnibuses are trying to do that. If I recall correctly the Geoff Johns GL omnibus includes the GL spinoff issues at the right moment, giving the complete story in the correct order.

Of course this is not always the case so you're mostly right.
>>
>tfw this thread has inspired you to collect all of Claremont X-Men as cheap as possible

could you just get a bunch of cheap phonebook showcases for like the price of an omni?
>>
>>77402007
I agree. I do wish the paper was a little higher quality, though. I'd love to have stuff like Man-Thing in black and white.
>>
>>77405177
Byrne's art probably looks better in black and white, so that really isn't a bad plan.
>>
>>77405177
If the Claremont run has them, just the Ultimate Collection. For my money the best in-betweens when it comes to regular trades and omnibuses.

>>77402882
Funny you say that..
>>
>>77400023
basically, Epic trades cost more so there's bound to be bigger a profit margin. And I suppose coloring makes it more popular fir people unlike b/w essentials
>>
>>77405177
the only problem with the essential x-men volumes is that depending on what printing it is, few of the volumes collect different stuff
>>
>>77400023
Yeah sadly they stopped the Essential line which is a shame ;_;

The black and white really brings out the glorious inking which only makes the art pop more

And of course all those comics on the cheap
>>
Showcase and Chronicles are dead as well, right?
>>
>>77402859
I like the Essential cause I can get them all beat up without feeling bad for how much I splash cash for it

My heart breaks when I see a spine and pages fall apart

Plus all that gutter loss with stupid coloring decions kind of make me not want to get too many omnibuses

I got the ditko spider man and I dont even read it I just have it there to look pretty I've already read the whole in cheaper tpbs
>>
>>77405966
DC Showcase was phased out like two years ago.
>>
>>77402859
I have a couple but I don't like Omni's, they're too big.
>>
>>77406058

Thats the only reason omnifags like omni's , its shelf porn. Most of the time they either dont read them or only read them once anyways.
>>
>>77409364
expensive ass shelf porn to be honest after my Spidey omni I'm not sure I even want to get any more
>>
>>77407872
>>77405966

DC's still making Showcases. Next year we're getting the next Batman volume that covers Denny O'Neil/Neil Adams' Batman stories, like the debut of Ra's al Ghul.
>>
>>77398110
This thread isn't
>What's the most pleb tier way to get comics?
>>
>>77398085
they're pretty crap quality.
>>
>>77404735
Masterworks. They're the best releases.
