Jason Aaron has a new book out this week.

It is, in a word, FUCKED.

It also might have the most potential of any new ongoing in a long time.

Let's read it.
>>
>>77389026
Give it a bump if you're reading.
>>
Uuuh, it started today? thanks op.
>>
>>77389045
Had to resize this page slightly. There are A LOT of double splash pages in this issue and they're FUCKING HUGE.
>>
>>77389130
>>77389089
LOTS of new comics out today.
>>
>>77389177
Anyone have any idea why Jason Aaron is so great at non-capes and so shit at capes? I'd say Marvel was just a paycheck to him, but he obviously tried on Thor, at least at first.

>>
The Bible... it still inspires.
>>
Aaron's hit and miss but can't pass this up
>>
>>77389329
>>77389314
This is Southern Bastards Jason Aaron, not Thor Jason Aaron.
>>
>>77389353
>>
>>77389281
They're basic utilitarian names.

What do we call the pond we shit in? Shit Pond
The huts we fuck in? Fuck Huts

I have heard nothing about this, and I am already assuming it is some sort of take on Lucifer walking among the beginnings of man.

Nothing surprising is going to happen, everything will be shit, and the flood will create Hell maybe?
>>
>>77389314
This is how you can tell who actually reads comics and who just shitposts in Marvel threads.

Art is 10/10, I didn't care much for the writing. The fact that the main guy is revealed to be Cain and this is basically a dark and gritty reworking of the bible killed my interest pretty hard. I'm sad now.
>>
>>77389380

He's Cain, actually.
>>
>>77389410
>>
>>77389413

>dark and gritty reworking of the bible

It's not. It's just based on the pre-flood Christian earth, plot has nothing to do with the actual biblical stories.
>>
>>77389466

>>77389492
You're right, I should've phrased that better. Still, didn't grab me at all, and I was kinda disappointed.

I'm still on the fence about picking this up. The art is good, and this seems like the sort of story that should be in Aaron's court, but I'm still not sure. I might end up just picking up Limbo today.

>>77390250
Yeah it is.

Though it's been a while since I last read the Bible. Tower of Babel came before the flood right? Sodom and Gamorrah came afterwards?
>>
>>77389026
This is one of those books you pick up while browsing because the cover looks cool, then you notice how edgy everything else really is, so you put it back on the shelf and never bother with it ever again.
>>
>>77391008
>edgy

That word used to serve a purpose when /co/ used it to describe 90s Image comics and why the sucked so much. Now whenever /co/ says "edgy" they almost always mean "anything that isn't LOLSORANDUM LE QUIRKY XD hipster/tumblr literal faggotry with nonstop meme referencing".
>>
>>77391132
Nah, it's accurate with Aaron, he really does try too hard.
>>
This is more try hard than the worst of Preacher
>>
. . . and you think this is interesting why? Whenever anyone criticizes Aaron they're told that only his cape books are bad and to go read real comics. Well, this is just as bad as his Marvel stuff.

The horror!
>>
>>77391821
I love violent stories, I'm not squeamish. My favourite books include stuff like 100 Bullets, Unknown Soldier and Metabarons.

This? This is nothing but really, really, really good art, sugar coating mediocre setting, mediocre dialogue, and a premise that's it's not all that interesting to begin with.

There's nothing in this that I couldn't get by watching Momoa's Conan, and that's pretty bad.
>>
>>77389857

>Tentacle arms

>>
You could do an interesting story in that time period, but this... this just seems like any of a hundred barbarian stories set in a brutal wasteland, where the villains wear animal bones around their necks and everything's made out of mud, and the main character is a cursed, undying wanderer.

Why bother with an anti-deluvian setting if it's just going to be another story like that?

Also the dialogue feels way too modern. And the outfits are off-the-shelf barbarian wear.

Guera was so good here.

The book's premise of God is a cunt is something I've seen so many times though I doubt I'll keep up.

The innate issues of religion/good sucks stories is that they go out of their way to make it look as ugly as possible with no regard to positive effects faith might bring to people. It's just so one sided.

Southern Bastards is good but it's like Remender's deadly class in the aspects that it pulls from personal experiences and molds them for fiction with an underlying authenticity.

This is just something we've seen so many times. It does put me in a mood for Tiger Lung though
>>
>>77393208
Modern phrasing in the dialogue is weird, but I really can't say I didn't expect it.
>>
Art was nice, but the colors were a little shit.
>>
>>77393430

It's just such a waste of the setting too. Even if you want to push the envelope, it's not doing anything with the source material.

I mean, it's a setting where paradise is still fresh on everyone's minds, where people live for hundreds of years, where half-divine abominations walk the streets, a world so depraved and vile that God just hit the reset button on the whole affair.

And THIS is what they come up with? Robert E. Howard meets Mad Max?

I mean, think about how terrible a person could become if they had six hundred years of depravity under their belt. THAT would be how to push the envelope in a setting like this. Not... cavemen.

How boring.

>>77394920

It's a sign of terrible laziness. No attempt at all to get into the mindset of people in an alien setting.
>>
>>77393208
>>77393430

It's only the first issue though, i'm not saying you're making bad points just that there's a lot of room to improve
>>
>>77395761
Seriously though, if anyone had the talent to write dialogue well they'd be in another medium.
>>
>>77395821
I don't know... I tend to work in comics and animation because I can write decent dialogue, but I lack confidence in my abilities to describe scenes and actions and make them interesting.
>>
>>77395802
This.
>>
>>77393430
>with no regard to positive effects faith might bring to people.
That's what happend when you live in a religious society where most people only talk of religion and faith in a positive way.
>>
>>77398746
What society is this?
>>
>>77395761
I honestly don't think anything can too Lucifer in this regard. The dealings of the angels with the lilum, building the silver city, etc.

I'd rather see an actual caveman story, with little to no dialogue, or really stilted language, wherr you learn of peoples relationships through inference, and its about dealing with meeting new tribes and living off the land etc, no bible references necessary.
>>
>>77395802
First impressions still matter, man. I'll probably keep reading a for a few more issues because it's a nice looking comic and Noah seem interesting but Cain and his sparking God cursing ass are a god damn bore.
>>
>>77391888
Yes and no. I think he got the tone right, and the intensity of the character right. But overall, it is full of walking cliches as you say. This was nothing we haven't seen before. The story is the same, names have been changed for marketing purposes etc.

I say this having been super hyped for aaron, really loving southern bastards and most of his work on Thor. I was let down. Could get better.
>>
>>77399330

Well then it doesn't need to be about Cain, really. It should just be about a caveman.

>>77400185

That's it. Cain is a bore. I don't want to see the world from his point of view. I don't care about him.

Also why is the world a giant mudhole? It should be mostly wilderness...

But I don't get it. The Bible says that no one should harm Cain, not that he CAN'T be harmed.

It's a warning to others to leave him alone, but he was still mortal.
>>
>>77402143
Wasn't it more like "whoever harms Cain will be harmed seven times over what he was" or something? The mark was to announce to people "yo don't hurt this guy cause if you do bad shit'll happen to you"
