The time before that, Cletus was able to regrow the symbiote whole just from the symbiote cells still in his blood. though I think there were pym particles involved.
as for fire, I seem to remember a bit in Carnage USA where his symbiote had gotten strong enough over the years that fire just pissed it off rather than posed mortal danger to it.
Throwing him into the sun would probably still work, the gravity should keep him stuck. Throwing him into a black hole should also work.
