Actually, people who read comics don't think that. Even for people who watch cartoons most memorable versions of Aquaman are the one from Justice League where he's a badass barbarian psycho, and the one from Brave And The Bold where he is pretty much King Arthur.
People who say that Aquaman is lame are the same casuals who say Superman is boring because he's overpowered - public opinion on stuff is pretty much stuck in the 80's, so it's based on old movies and Superfriends.
