It's awkward. It constantly switches between a talk show format to time traveling adventure, and this happens way too many times per show. There are educational parts that are usually a song and dance number, making them nearly worthless for that purpose. The stories are, as movie Sherman would put it, apocryphal.
Basically, the show is a fevered, albeit pretty, mess. They could have easily done a miniaturized version of the movie, with episodic adventures on top of overarching character development, but the movie's failure probably put a damper on that. The show is sometimes quite faithful to the original, but there's a reason those were super short segments. As a 30 minute show, it doesn't hold up.
