It's good, but it's also over and there really isn't much to discuss.

That said
>doesn't get the attention it deserves.
You have to be an actual retard to believe this. It's gotta be one of the most popular/famous non-cape comics out there, and it got a well made, well-respected film.

Fuck off.

There was just a busy thread about it a few days ago cause it was required reading for someone's comic book college course.

I liked it. It was enjoyable with a really fun cast. It's also been over for basically a decade. There's not much to discuss and honestly most of the discussion would either be "waifu wars" or "Scott pilgrim is hipster garbage". So yeah. I don't see a need to make threads for it.

Half a decade, last book came out in 2010

The story is great if you're reading it for the first time as a teenager o a kissless 20-something. As you get into relationships you re-read it and realize how fucking garbage Scott Pilgrim is as a human being, and how much of a bitch Ramona Flowers is, and that Envy Adams is one of the most understandable human beings in the series.

But no one will ever be as boss as Wallace Fucking Wells.

Of course, bring it here on /co/ and some people will shit on it for being to hipster because it got too mainstream. Wrap your head around that. And the movie was garbage and both gave rise to an annoying tide of Pilgrim wannabes.

4chan as a whole can't stand anything even remotely related to hipsters. I like it though regardless. Comic was definitely better, but Macaulay Culkin's brother did an amazing job as Wallice. Also the second evil ex was definitely a lot more entertaining in the movie. Other than that I enjoyed the graphic novel more.

>>
Ended a while ago, most threads I've seen about it have a consensus of "it was good, we've talked it out, that's pretty much it."

It was actually a really well-made modern coming of age story. Scott realizes he's an asshole and a really shitty person, accepts it, and tried again after he and his girlfriend are ready to drop their baggage.
>>
>>77361008
I just don't see how they could make a borderline retarded character competent in real life. I can only imagine he had to change the character because it just didn't work in the medium. Not defending it, I just don't see how you could put scott pilgrims character on the big screen as a main character.

That said, Micheal Cera is still a very weird choice to play him. Micheal Cera is good at playing one character, and that's micheal Cera. And Scott is like...only BARELY within Cera's range. In the He's kind of a slack jawed, clueless dork. But not really the same kind of dork Cera's used to playing.

>As you get into relationships you re-read it and realize how fucking garbage Scott Pilgrim is as a human being, and how much of a bitch Ramona Flowers is

That was the point. Scott's not a good person throughout most of the comic. He's incredibly self centered and has a selective memory, especially when it comes to ex-girlfriends, and doesn't see himself as responsible for anything he's ever done wrong. Ramona does the same thing in a way. She's aware of what she did wrong in most of her relationships but doesn't really seem to realize or care how bad she's hurt most of them. Getting over those issues is a big part of the last book.

I hate Scott Pilgrim.

When I was younger, it excited me, because I thought this was the life that was just around the corner for me.

Now that I'm older, it depicts the life I never had due to insecurity, cowardice and procrastination.
>>
>>77362373
Scott was insecure, cowardly and did nothing with his life, the series is just extremely unrealistic and idealized.

Scott Pilgrim taught me a lot about budding love, coming to terms with who I am, and the importance of moving on.

Real life taught me that Scott Pilgrim is fucking bullshit and so far up its own ass it hurts sometimes. Shit goes wrong and people leave you when they find out you're not the person they want you to be. Suck it up and move on with your life. It's not a grand gesture or big deal. You just gradually get numb to it, then it's gone.

Otherwise, I thought it was funny. The author sprinkles reality with ridiculousness lightly enough for it to add onto to scenes without trying to steal the show. Also kind of sort of cathartic; I saw my friends in the characters. I seriously felt for Knives; nothing feels worse than feeling like you weren't good enough.
>>
>>77360058

I first heard about the comic from reading the About the Illustrators page on this anthology called Geektastic.
Then I stumbled upon the Vs. Animation clip. OK, maybe I'll understand the comic a bit faster. That looked cool.

Found out there was a free download link, couldn't afford to lose the opportunity to get them. I read the first 2 books, it was OK. I wasn't (and probably still isn't) sure if I got the point of the comic though. (But then again, English is not my native language and this is probably my first slice-of-life serial comic albeit a bit hyperbolic one.)

Two definitely good things about it:
1. the movie introduced me to Edgar Wright. I LOVED Shaun of the Dead, and I'm hoping to see the rest of the Cornetto Trilogy.

2. GOAT lo-fi rock.
>>
>>77363780
Whoops, forgot to clarify how I got interested in it:

I read the comic first with zero expectations or knowledge of what it was, and as I was reading I kept thinking it was a simple coming-of-age story. Then Matthew Patel happened and I was ready to drop the book like a rock. I really think the story could have been more effective if it wasn't so idealized and fits to Scott's development in such a linear, predictable manner. I don't want to hate it because it was part of that gamer-geek culture from the get-go, but I really find that kind of stuff cringeworthy, at least from this current decade.

Really, there are three aspects any actor chosen to be Scott would have to pull off. First, they have to look good doing action shots, which, no, no Michael Cera cannot do that. Second, they have to be an asshole, which Michael Cera can absolutely do (see- Crystal Fairy and the Magical Cactus), but chose not to. Third, he has to be dorky and slightly awkward, which is Michael Cera's whole thing. So while I love Michael Cera, and this movie kinda started that, I grew to hate him as Scott after I actually read the books.

I thought Edgar Wright directed that movie really well, though. I thought Allison Pill, while hot irl, looked a little off as Kim Pine.

I'm not gonna bother reading this whole thread, but one thing you should know OP is that around the time the movie and the final volume of the comic were coming out this place was DRENCHED in Scott Pilgrim threads. To the point where a lot of people here grew to hate it just because of how overexposed it was. That may sound silly but it wasn't uncommon for close to half the threads to be about SP some days.

So it's a mix of lingering resentment from that, it being over so there's not new stuff to talk about, and with it being as prominent as it was on /co/ a lot of people have said everything they feel like saying about it.
>>
>>77372425
Maybe not when he wrote the very first comic but that's the whole point of the final book. It's all about Scott finally realizing that he is an awful person and was sugarcoating his own memories and that Ramona isn't a princess to be saved but a shitty person on her own right.
>>

Ramona was a shitty character. She was a good prize and motivator for Scott though.
>>
>>77361498

>>77374113
People overestimate how much the comic is trying to 'look down' on the scene and lifestyle. Ultimately everyone but scott is a functioning member of society who cares to varying degrees about their friends and family.

Scott lives in a world of fantasy, can't even comprehend the needs and feelings of others and on top of it all doesn't care.
>>
>>77375042
She wasn't a shitty character she was a shitty person. There's miles and miles of difference. And if you think the point of the series was that Ramona wasn't worth the trouble then it was you who was misguided.

>>77375271
Cera? Scott didn't look like the best fighter in Canada, that was basically the point. And of course there's the whole metaphorical interpretation for the fights. That said I think in-canon the fights are real and they are only metaphorical in relation to real life.
