the muted colors of the costume are taken from Superman Lives, as is the climactic fight with the giant spider and the refusal to show him in the costume for most of the movie

If you view it as a complete deconstruction of the superhero genre and of Superman in particular, it's brilliant.
Zod killing jor el was a metaphor for Cain and Abel, the phantom zone "suits" appeared to look like sperm cells to represent zod and his corrupt "seed".

Old men and dogs and school buses full of children die all the time, with or without Clark being there. For future reference, Pa had no idea the extent of Clarks powers such as flying. In his mind, Clark saving him or them kids or anyone else in his sphere of influence was just super selfish and detrimental to society as a whole since the natural life and death processes around the world will still go on despite him being there. Unless you brought candy for the whole world, dont give it out at all. Lastly, pa ket did not "commit suicide for a dog". if his leg had not been smashed, he wouldve escaped easily (under movie logic) like the dog escaped.
>2. metropolips destruction
This is a noob superman that literally learned to fly a couple days ago. Even thats not a great excuse though, the real answer is that when faced with such an overwhelming, destructive, insane threat like Zod, the first and only priority should be neautralizing that threat. If Superman wentn to comically pick up the building Zod lasered over (something that wouldnt work at all - hed just crash throught according to physics it when going to lift it), Zod would be out lasering another building or blowing up a school bus full of children or a dog. Stopping Zod has to be the only thing on his mind since thats really the key to saving people. additionally, going frame by frame in the scene supes literally does nothing wrong except the glass building.

Look up Christ Nolans definition of 'realisitic' thats what they were going for. Not literally realistic, but fantastical things existing in a realistic setting and the non fantastical denizens reacting appropriately. All the crazy fun comic book shit is happening but in a non crazy world.
Superman did not hesitate on destroying the genesis Chamber because he simply does not need it anymore. He has the codex, he is the codex. All that has ever live and will ever live is in him.

Blame the writers for putting him in this corner, but within the plot of the movie superman literally had no other option. nevermind that zod was actively getting stronger as the fight went on, even if he managed to knock out zod - then what? keep him in a head lock until the world governments can build some sort of super prison? this is a noob superman, he doesnt even know what his races own weaknesses are. zod would just break out of whatever super secret underground prioson they built over the course of a headlock and go on to kill more people. he had to be stopped

zod is probably an autistic. he was so mad at kall and jorel that he wanted to terraform earth specifically just to spite them. this continues the theme of him being incompetent from the opening scene. "born to protect kyrpton" yet he lets it get blown up by ignoring scientists, "born to protect krypton" yet he goes to war instead of going to another planet. hes a real jerk that zod.
things people should actually whine about in Man of Steel:

Another interesting point is the blue beam during the codex scene. This beacon was a beacon of hope. It meant krypton had another chance.
