Most webcomic readers are straight men and like cute girls, and having two get together acts both as a sexual stimulant for men and also gives the author free SJW progress points.
Gay webcomics hardly get any attention, with the most notable being very scantly read compared to those with lesbians inserted into the cast of a normal comic.
Most webcomickers have picked up on this and added at least one pair.

Yeah, Mari started out as a peripheral character, but the story's been increasingly focusing on her for a while, starting with her breakup from Will. It seems like she's being used as a foil for the other characters, who're all in varying degrees of trying to break out of/being broken out of their twentysomething stasis.

That was one of my favorite Marigold moments, and I was glad she was getting a job and maturing a little. I thought it would've been a nice send-off for her character if she appeared less often after that.
