That bit isn't really dated because you could drop any First Lady into the scene and it would still work the same way. Things like Bart watching a shoplifting video on VHS are what I'd consider dated.
>>
>>77339290
I bet that it'll be relevant again in another eleven months

>because you could drop any First Lady into the scene and it would still work the same way.

Yeah, it could just as easily be Michelle Obama
>>
Now a gag with Bill Clinton walking around playing the sax is dated because that was a particular stereotype about him that wouldn't apply to any president.

why does it take two fucking years to make an episode of The Simpsons, other cartoons do it in less?
>>
>>77346883
They actually write a script.
>>
>>77346883
I'd imagine the two year cycle is somehow the most cost effective.

Also surely once the cycle starts it must be very difficult to change it, what with likely dozens of episodes all at different stages all at once?
>>
>>77344853
>two-year production cycle

>>
>>77342443
I spent over a hundred dollars on vinyls yesterday. In my defense I found a lot of really cool ones.
>>
>>77346883
I think they batch produce a bunch of them to save money while other shows are in a continuous production cycle
>>
She looks like Blossom!
>>
>>77346948
South Park takes longer than a week to make.

Blatantly cheap animation that they've been making jokes about for years allows them to make it considerably quicker and cheaper, but making a show is a very time consuming process regardless of how low budget it looks.
>>
>>77346883
If I had to guess I'd say each step in the production cycle is done separately.

Writing
then animation
then recording

I'm sure there's more to it than that but it's probably the most cost effective method.

Back when the Simpsons aired it was somewhat believable that someone was stuck in the Disco era
Now he's just some mentally insane guy
>>
>>77348745

>First appeared in Season 7.

Honestly, when you see Disco Stu you're more than likely looking at an episode where the Simpsons was already in decline. Season 7 was great for sure, but even Season 8 is pretty debatable.
>>
>>77347788
This is dated, but somehow it's even funnier now.
>>
>>77346883
2 is on the lengthy side, but it's not ridiculous. Many production cycles for 22 minute cartoons take over a year to go from conception to release. There are a lot of hands it has to pass through to finish the product and traditional animation takes a lot of work.

David Ortiz, Matt Damon, and Seth McFarlane are gonna beat my ass for this, but does anyone know who the Kennedys are?

"Is he the guy that got shot on the History channel?"

I'm pretty sure kids don't know.
>>
I didn't know cable TV used to have its own awards show until I saw it on The Simpsons.
>>
>>77348951
>pretty sure my kids don't

Get them a better fucking education then. No, seriously, that's a really fucking big problem man. You gotta teach them about the history of America. And naturally the rest of the world.

Now here's the toughie: start kids out on local scale history then expand or start big then move inward so you can see how the ripples affected home?

I started out with state-level history then we moved to US and finally world history myself.
>>
>>77346980
They put out a documentary when they were making the CentiPad episode and they had 6 days to write it, plot out the animation and record the voices. They even had time to go in and edit a pile of stuff because of new topical shit happening throughout the week.
>>
>>77343004

>Are we insane yet?
>>
>>77346883
It doesn't take two years or even close. It's really more like six months with episodes being done in batches of 3-4 at a time.
>>
>>77348951
Come on, dude. If you were a 10 year old in the 90s, JFK was still decades before your time.
>>
>>77339548
He's still entitled to style himself President, because nobody's going to forget that he's had his two terms.

It's still dated by the appearances of Nixon (who died in 1995 or so), Bush snr (who retired in 1993 and is 91 now), Henry Kissinger (92 and ready to drop), or even billionaire tyrant Rupert Murdoch (stepping down as president of FOX, 84, said to be in poor health and possibly suffering from dementia based on his appearance before the UK government over phone hacking at his newspapers, had an entire family since his last appearance and a hilarious divorce as well, being replaced by his incompetent children who will either run the empire into the ground within a few years or tear it apart trying to gain overall control for themselves).

Plus there's a whole bunch of early episodes in syndication alongside later ones that don't make sense, because the early ones are pre-cellphone plots and the later ones simply reflect modern life by including cellphones.

>>77349537
Their process is different though; they basically use clipart and prebuilt sets for the majority of it, and the animation is mostly simplistic enough that they have very little to do. It's like comparing playing with dolls to putting on a play with actors in a theater.
>>
>>77343530
>>77339360
That's a no-brainer because it's a joke about how Apple was close to bankruptcy at the time when the episode aired.
>>
The psychic in Bart the Murderer saying it's Splitsville for Ted Kennedy and his wife.
>>
"A portable stereo? Bart, were you planning to listen to hard rock in Sunday school?"

"Maybe."

This bit stopped making sense during the Clinton years.
>>
The idea of a 30-something woman having a crush on the Monkees as a child.
>>
>>77348951
I'm 18 and know who the Kennedys are.
>>
>>77349695
>even billionaire tyrant Rupert Murdoch (stepping down as president of FOX, 84, said to be in poor health and possibly suffering from dementia based on his appearance before the UK government over phone hacking at his newspapers

I don't believe the guy is senile, but he sure did exploit the feeble old man card at that thing to get out of answering uncomfortable questions. For example, he is partially deaf (not surprising at his age) and purposely didn't wear a hearing aid that day so he could have the excuse of "Oh, I can't hear the question. Please say again."

If you can attend a two-hour hearing like this and then crack jokes to reporters afterwards, you can't be that senile or out of it. Whatever happens to Murdoch's empire doesn't really matter to him anymore, but you can sure bet he's concerned about the fate of his son.
>>
>>77347788
This is an example of a joke reverse-dating
>>
>>77348951

Come to think of it, the joke barely works now anyway. The "end" of disco was 1980; there are people with children who don't remember it. Disco-style music in itself doesn't get anywhere near the backlash it used to, because for the people who didn't grow up in the days when it was obnoxiously omnipresent, it's just another genre of music - look at how popular Daft Punk is.
>>
>>77345663
...that's the same thing as saying she is a nobody..
>>
>>77349284
Pretty much everyone who took history knows JFK, and most people who are up on their politics know Ted, but the days of the Kennedy family being American royalty are long gone. I think the last one to be really prominent would be JFK Jr, and most people who know him these days only know him because he died in a plane crash. Everyone else is just C-list celebrities and the occasional moderate political position.

That one actually works on a different level now.
>>
>>77355589
Yeah, a shittier level.
When it aired, Homer wasn't an ignorant buffoon. He was just a 35 year old man.

Not knowing about Apple made perfect sense.

But now, not knowing Apple is borderline retarded.

In order to retain the initial meaning, change "Apple" to "Linux".

>>77355642
But Linux has never been a big common name. It's remained relatively stable around 1-2% browser share for the past 20 years. It's lost some ground on server percentages but considering how much more servers there are these days I'm sure as a business name it's remained relatively stable too.
