Is Harley Quinn the most woobied character in comics?
I can't imagine any other villain getting a pass for all the bad shit she's done with personality and humor

Why is Harley even called a villain anymore? They clearly view her as a hero by and large

She's a main character in DC superhero girls marketed towards kids
She's a hero in the comics
In the new blockbuster movie she is the main character who is going to save the world with mischief

Did DC make a flub here? I just don't get it

Aside from her being very appealing to casuals
She is funny and outlandish
While also being sympathetic due to being an abuse survivor

Its like the casual lottery all rolled into one and DC doesn't care if she's a hero or villain as long as she makes them money
The people who write her call her an anti villain now
>>
I've never been a fan of harley so this weird "lol she's a good guy, still commits awful horrific crimes but don't worry, she's good" thing to be utterly confusing.

I don't understand the appeal of the character at all and she isn't funny, she's LOLSORANDUMB I HAS A SPORK tier and yet someone out there is eating that shit up.

Everyone is hero in their own comic.

Whenever a character gets over, it makes sense to make them a face so you can push them and the audience can follow their adventures.

That's why in Batman Brave and The Bold one of the episodes had the Joker team up with Batman.

>>
>>77320904
wrestling comparison doesn't really work
I mean Joker is more popular than all villains at DC he won't get to be on the JL like Luthor though
>>
I've wondered before about Harley, and how the Joker made her insane.
I like the idea that she was manipulated for the sole purpose of a particular break out from Arkham, and that she proved too useful (to his surprise) to discard afterwards.
So how was she made crazy?
What if she were affected by some altered Joker toxin? Look at how she acts: Sanity and rational thought are severely effected, loss of emotional control, complete loss of morals, a childlike attitude, and an utter devotion to Joker.
I don't care what he talked about in various sessions with her, that level of mind break doesn't come from talking to someone.
I think he effects her like a drug. Moments can shock her back into a temporary sanity (usually him doing something horrific to her), and she reacts by pulling away from him. For a short time, you see her start to stabilize to a small degree, even regain aspects of morality and rational thought. And then, like a heroin addict kept away from her fix, she starts going down hill, and fast. She will do anything to get back to the Joker, and when she does she experiences utter euphoria, no matter how poorly he treats her.
He didn't talk her into being crazy and loving him. He drugged her in a way that leaves her broken, exposed, and addicted, to him.
Injustice is a great example of this: she was stabilizing, becoming a better person, even became an ally to Batman, of all people. Superman thought she was enough of a threat to send Lobo after her. What happened to Nightwing left her genuinely effected. She became close, in a way, to Ollie and Canary. Fast forward to the game, and what happens? Joker shows up, and all that is gone. Drug effect kicks back in.

I'd like to know why people complain about Cap Cold getting to show up in a small supporting role in JL because that's forced apparently but see no problem with showing Harley as a hero even though Cold is pretty consistently showcased as a good person who had a shitty life and had to turn to crime because of that in a much longer publication history than Harley.

Don't pull the abuse card on me because it's been established that both Cold and his sister were abused by their father decades ago.

I find her to be the most obnoxious character in comics. She is in no way a hero. She's a mass-murdering psychopath who will kill you for inconveniencing her. She also always gets her way and somehow is a master combatant because she took gymnastics in high school, which is nonsensical even for comics.

Her only endearing trait is that she serves to expose the shallowness of the comic fans who enjoy her books.

Bane and Riddler deserve to be shown as heroes more than Harley out of Bat-villains alone.

Harley Quinn is a very big case of "We like Harley Quinn. Except for most of the things about Harley Quinn" characterizations. Really, from series to series the only consistant parts of her character are.
>She jokes around a lot
>She's acrobatic
>Black/red color scheme
>She and the Joker had some sort of relationship.

Other than that people tend to just portray her character however the fuck they want without much remorse. She's villainous, selfless, a victim, an oppressor, a murder, a philanthropist, a lunatic, a genius, a hero, an antihero, a nuetral party, a love struck girl, A cautionary tale, Completely independent, an unobtainable reward, a promiscuous slut, a respectful tease, a powerful fighter, a subpar combatant.

And while I'm sure this is true for basically EVERY comic book character ever from writer to writer, with Harley Quinn it seems even more apparent because there's so many aspects of her fanbase that only love one specific iteration/portrayal of her. Harley Quinn can basically be whoever you want as long as you keep those 4-5 key things about her character in tact.

Some TVTropes term. OP used it wrong though.

Its a character who gets shit on constantly and doesn't deserve it. Long-suffering characters, like Peter Parker or Lee Everett.
Woobies don't deserve it, at least not at first although some go crazy and become villains later on.

Jesus of Christianity is a good example Woobie.

There's three major origins for her.

Bruce Timm's has her as a manipulative sleazebag who was manipulated and turned into an infantile unhinged anarchist.

The later one in the comics had her as a sociopath who was manipulated into servitude by a better sociopath.

The one that the people who see her as sympathetic go with is this one, who suffered a nervous breakdown which resulted in a dissociation disorder where she no longer feels responsibility or shame due to defining herself by others.
>>
>>77327828
Harley was the name of a monkey because in his origin story, the real Harley was his manager when he was a stand-up comedian who made fun of Owlman. Owlman chopped her up and forcefed her corpse to him, and he lost his mind which resulted in him spending his life ridiculing Owlman and ensuring nobody feared him.

It only happened because the team who was working on her had one last issue before they passed her off to the team that was doing her solo book, so they decided to wreck the character in that issue and cause a mess for the other team.

They didn't get a chance to see what the issue was, and were writing based on the issues previously and so it was never referenced.

According to various writers and artists, including Azarello and Liefeld, DC editorial doesn't actually do editorial anymore. They are just the managers who pass down the demands from the corporate heads on what must be in the book or what must not be. If it fits their guidelines, it passes. There's also poor communication and planning. Liefeld said that entire books end up having to be rewritten and redrawn/inked/colored with entirely different stories to fit them into something some other team decided to do so there'd be a crossover with another book, although how that crossover was supposed to work was left to both teams independently to figure out so it didn't even end up going together. On top of that, everyone involved wasn't paid for additional work, and basically did double the job for the original pay.

Some others have said Marvel works basically the same way, but even more independent/"nobody on the right knows what the people on the left are doing" than DC.
