Yes, though personally I prefer Universo Project. But I'm a huge Saturn Girl-fag, so take that with a grain of salt.

>>77297589
It's kind of amazing how the majority of Legion material is perfectly readable and entertaining.

Despite the other problems(dead fanbase, the all too frequent reboots), the Legion doesn't really have any infamously bad stories.
>>
>>77297095
I'm planning to finally read The Great Darkness Saga trade that I bought along with the first two Levitz 80s ongoing trades once my stuff arrives in Alaska.

I picked up TGDS after the other two trades, which I loved. The Star Trek crossover was pretty nice as well.

I'm kinda dreading Threeboot. I've heard so much good, bad, or just plain weird.

On the one hand, drill sergeant Lydda. Unf.

On the other, Threeboot's version of Triad and Cargg in genral. Just... what?

I'm with you on that, Universo Project is my favorite Legion story. Imra is so badass in that one.

>>77298375
If you like GDS there's one hardcover right after it titled "The Curse" that picks up after it. The actual Darkseid parts of that story don't actually get finished in the collection though (annual #2 from 1986 has the end, not sure why they didn't include it).

Bierbaums indeed. Honestly, the first half of 5YL, while depressing as fuck, was actually pretty good. Then the Bierbaums took over and started projecting their weird fan-fic-y bullshit into it.

The Proty thing and turning Mysa into a carbon copy of Nura(not to mention Nura herself in that run, ugh), are particular highlights.

>Good thing about Threeboot
Lyle is a worse dork than usual I thought him and Brainy would end up being together at one point because damn he wanted him bad. Hung out with him worse than Reboot. Lyle was pretty gay in all versions.
>Bad thing
Triad, Cargg, Brainiac 5. He's Vril 2.0. but doesn't do it like Vril. No XS and No Gates. Brainy's outfit is also....bad. His other outfit is a LOT better but his first outfit is horrible.

Saturn Girl, Invisible Kid (Lyle Norg) Brainiac 5, Princess Projectra (Reboot) Gates and XS. I like Lyle because he thinks he's cool but he's gay and dorky as hell.

I read all of them but Levitz and Reboot are my favorites. I only dislike the fact that IK is dead in Original and Retroboot.

I also write stuff. Writing gay Threeboot porn.

Making Brainy into a Vril clone is a terrible idea. It just kind of degrades both characters in a way.

That's what happens when editors don't pay any attention.

Same thing happened much later with JLU. Nobody was paying attention, and Lemire had the Legion hijack the book. Granted JLU was a total slog up till then, and it was funny as hell, but that should never have been allowed to happen.

There was nothing Brainy about Threeboot Brainy that I can recall. Sure he had snark but he was too much like his ancestor. It's hard to write him in fanfiction. I'm trying though by making him obvious to romance and stuff so he's stuck marrying IK.

As far as I know there isn't Gates or Xs in Threeboot. Not sure about Ferro. Threeboot also triggered my Emetophobia at points. It's not bad but I have to prep myself up to read it.

For anyone who wants to pick up the Legion there isn't a starting point. Just pick any 'run' and read that run. That's it. They are not in conjunction with each other so if you read Retro you don't have to read Threeboot unless you want to read it. You can stick with one arc if you like too. Same with the cartoons (which are different than the comic books as well.)

Adventure comics 346? Thanks anon.
>>
I tried to read along with the JSA threads but started getting behind and just got out of control to where I had no clue what the fuck was happening.

I've tried to start again from Waid's Legion, from the first Legion #1, from the beginning of Levitz, but I honestly think Legion is the ONE series where it actually is a good idea to read literally everything from the beginning. I got the Showcase Presents collections and have been blowing through them.

One thing that confuses me: the Legion were very popular among Superboy (who was also very popular) readers, right? And then they stayed big into the 60's and 70's as they became more separate from Superboy, right? And by the late 70's they were a sensation and eventually they were DC's biggest hit behind New Teen Titans, right? So in theory, throughout DC's history there has been this huge Legion fanbase.

But if that's true, how come nobody now knows who the fuck they are? Where did all those fans go? Is it just because it only appealed to existing Legion fans and did little to attract new readers as the decades went on? Is it just because they never had a show in the 70's and 80's or appeared with the Superfriends?
>>
>>77303834
Lots of reboots ever since COIE fucked their continuity, and the lack of crossover potential probably hurt them too.
>>
>>77303834
>by the late 70's they were a sensation and eventually they were DC's biggest hit behind New Teen Titans
NTT was early/mid 80s

but yeah looking at it from an outsider perspective (and I have kept up with the JSA storytimes so you can see when DC would pull stunts to try and turn the LOSH around again), I think sometime during 5YL there must have been some major slump. Apparently after Giffen left a lot of readers went with him, and the Bierbaums had a very limited time left on the book, Tom Bierbaum has an LJ where he wrote a ton of stuff about being on the book and they basically knew sales had slipped and they were going to get kicked off and of course that happened, but even after that it wasn't much longer until Zero Hour and the reboot.

There's an anon who compiled some sales data for LOSH books but I don't remember how reboot started out, but of course eventually it still didn't work out after a few years and we got Threeboot, which also didn't work out so they just said fuck it all and went back to the original continuity, but sales were still pretty low. LOSH could still carry two books going into Flashpoint but sales weren't that great on either of them

I didn't know shit about the Legion until the JSA story times and I'd always kind of avoided it because I didn't know what the fuck reboot and threeboot were or where to start reading or who in god's name are all these people how am I supposed to keep track of this???

It feels like the long decades of original continuity, multiple hard reboots, and massive cast eventually lead to a quagmire that older fans just weren't into and was impenetrable to new readers, plus the past decade or so of shoddy quality books certainly hasn't helped
>>
>>77303834
>how come nobody now knows who the fuck they are?
I blame DC in this case. There wasn't a lot of publicity to my knowledge of the LOSH. No cartoon until the 90s. No Movies. No TV series. Only appeared in cameos in other series. Nothing. When Zero Hour happened they nuked Legion because it wasn't as popular so you have a lot of old pissed off fans who just left and then you have the 'new' generation who read Reboot. Then it happened again. Then again with them trying to appeal to the Levitz fans again but by then it was too late. Not sure what the hell they are doing now.

All DC had to do was make a cartoon during that run and make that one anime cartoon but their excuse is that Legion isn't good as a stand alone series. It didn't stop them from making a GoTG movie which broke the bank.
>>
>>77304123
Legion has a very complex balance between nostalgia and innovation, as well. It's not unlike the X-Men in that way, I think, wherein lots of the appeal is the large cast and the extensive continuity and capacity for references and callbacks, but when handled badly you get "Oh, this story again?" Both also have the problem wherein characters develop and age in the course of a significant run, but are then too popular to really let them go off and change profoundly (I think the X-books have that worse, to be fair).
>>
>>77304165
>Legion isn't good as a stand alone series
What? Their most popular eras were the ones where they ran Superboy out of his own book.
>>
>>77303834
>Is it just because it only appealed to existing Legion fans and did little to attract new readers as the decades went on?

From reading the Legion reboot here on /co/ I think it's a mixture. They tried to bring in new readers while also throwing in old plots, characters, and winks and nods for the older readers and ended up just stuck in the middle of the road. Nothing about it felt satisfying

I'm expecting the same from Threeboot

The highest selling book was Legion of 3 worlds which ironically had all of the previous Legions in it. Also Threeboot at the beginning was the second highest. Not sure about Reboot at the beginning because the graph didn't have Reboot when it first started. Just around Legion Lost v.1.

Oh and my Iphone case came in. It's out of focus but not bad for 1 dollar. I'm going to use it I guess. Came with free screen protectors too.
>>
>>77297095

I understand why people like the legion but there's just to many of them for me. 22 pages a month is not enough to do such a large cast justice. I was enjoying the futuristic aspects of JL3000 but the cast in that has bloated heavily as well
>>
>>77304259

That was Threeboot. It went to shit after Waid left sadly.
>>
>>77304249
>What? Their most popular eras were the ones where they ran Superboy out of his own book.

I know right? I'm saying this is what I believe DC feels. They were given the option to make a cartoon using the Legion in picture related but didn't because they claim that the Legion isn't good as a stand alone series so they did TT for the batfamily appeal and probably because the Batman animated series was still hot. Then they did LOSH later on CW and it was cancelled because CW didn't want to make a season 3.

Outside of ONE cartoon there's no tv series, no movie, nothing. It's the only longest standing series that I know of with little to nothing.
>>
>>77304455
>>
>>77304296
This is probably why a lot of people don't read the legion but this could be solved in a similar fashion as the cartoon: have issues with one or two members in highlights.

I mean there's a crapload of Avengers but people know them over the Legion. It was at the point that there was over 50 of them.
>>
>>77304455
I have a lot of fondness for the LOSH cartoon, but I'll admit it kind of goofed up focusing on a small cast for most of the beginning.
>>
>>77304581
Yeah, a lot of people go into Legion assuming that "oh shit, they have over 25 characters in every story!" but most stories focus on a small handful of characters at a time.

My theory was that the original idea was something like "Mysa marries Mordru as a political move/attempt to keep an eye on him, vastly underestimated how powerful he had become", and the Bierbaums misread it as "Mysa marries Mordru because he's her true love <3!"
>>
>>77307410
It did seem like she married Mordru to spy on him or sabotage him or something and it backfired, but then they spun it into "she actually DID love him in spite of the abuse" and didn't really imply that she may have been manipulated into feeling that way, then to make matters worse they had this little number >>77307287 where she decided her love for him was the source of her power somehow even though that was clearly not the case.

And apparently they intended to have her reclaiming her power and acting as a witch again after that arc but they got booted off the book so it never happened, we just got oddly slutty SW6 Mysa instead.

You'd think after Guardians of the Galaxy made bank, that DC would at least have something Legion related in the running in order to get in on that delicious space money.

>I wonder how massively disappointing it'll be.
Consider that one of the appeals of the Legion is the massive and diverse cast. There's no way all of them would get a fair showing in a movie where the main lineup is inevitably the founders plus Brainy.

This is why a TV series would work better.

LoSH is a thinly written soap opera/teen drama with very little in the way of compelling science fiction.

They'd be better advised to go with a Teen Titans movie, which has a wider fanbase in any case.

The (very) few arcs with emotional or dramatic weight to them are payoffs to long familiarity with the characters. And the only two Legionaires that anyone outside of comics would be familiar with (Superboy, Supergirl) are tied up with other works.

The problem is that DC is kind of troubled in general right now, the only news for ongoings that has come out are guaranteed sellers like the Johns Aquaman thing and JL/A crossover. The other DC news is just minis or OGNs. I don't know if they're decided what they're doing after DCYou yet. The digital line is also kind of being culled. It's a bad idea to ask me to write the Legion.
>Projectra using her powers to hide the fact that she's a snake
>Karate Kid and her hook up, screw Xenophobia it's the 31 century
>Picture related
>OT3 founders drama that eventually ends up being OT3
>legion of substitute heroes with Polar boy being a sub Legionnaire when he has to on missions
>Legion of villains so Mekt is a bad guy again
>Gates/Brainy bromance
>CK is back and adds drama since he likes Lyle
>Jacques joins the Legion. Neither of them die
>Imra/Dreamy end up as leaders at one point
>Gim/Violet hook up
>Something with Mysa and Dawnstar
>What that one anon said about Brainy's mom being a reoccurring villian
>Dark circle drama
>Brainiac 1 takes over COMPUTO
>>

>Ayla is a founder instead of Garth
>eventually revealed to be a lie
>shortly after the team was founded Garth went crazy and evil and became Lightning Lord, and Ayla was brought in to replace him and cover up the team's connection to a major super-villain
>only he's not evil, he's possessed by the lightning ghost or whatever of Mekt, who was "killed" by the lightning beast

>subs become official substitute Legionnaires and instructors at the academy; wacky adventures with the trainees ensue
>Ekron is an ancient god of destruction they manage to stop with the help of a pod of space whales Ultra Boy gets together
>the Legion is founded as a more heroic and awesome alternative to the still-existing L.E.G.I.O.N., which Brainy is initially a leader of

I really like the last two ideas the most.

That's a pretty garbage attitude, execs.
>>
I'm taking the "read everything" approach, but since I care rarely get into Silver Age writing I'm kinda skimming for the most part.
I'm on Adventure #357.
>>
>>77330446
That's how I did it anon. I should stop being lazy and re read Silver Age too but I don't feel like hunting down for downloads.
>>
>>77330446
If you're more comfortable with Bronze Age writing, you can go with the Disco Legion starting in Superboy starring the Legion of Super-Heroes #197
>>
>>
>Looking for fanart
>found some really bad Threeboot pages
Oh lord I can't wait until we storytime that.

Not strictly true.

Seriously? That's just mean.

>>77334160
Both Levitz and Giffen these days seem a bit bitter at the series they helped define.

or at least post them in aco

There's virtually no good Legion porn. That's what happens when your relatively obscure franchise has its fanbase mostly die out in the early 2000s.
>>
>>77344760
i just want those cute robo brainy lewds dammit
>>
I like Wildfire and Dawnstar. Haven't read anything Legion related, they were in Futures End or something and I like them.
>>
>>77344816
Well you better learn how to draw, or convert a prominent artist into a Legion-fag, because you ain't getting those lewds otherwise.

Dawny is a pretty good waifu
>>
>>77346861
She tends to get shat on though. Maybe it's because of her origins, or she's seen as one of the "lame" Legionnaires.
>>
>>77349112
I don't know if it's the origin. I mean it's some weird space Indians shit but I feel like it doesn't get brought up a lot. Might just be from not being a silver age Legionnaire. I don't think the cartoon really used anyone post-Shooter, the Reboot Legion didn't introduce a character similar to her until almost the end, and Threeboot didn't last long enough to get to her either.

>>77322515

She wasn't called "Projectra" at all in Reboot continuity, she was "Sensor". She also later mutated into a naga-form, trading "cute" for "hot" in the process

That change was bad and dumb.
