>Here's some news! Gerard Way joined the panel, and announced that he has his own imprint at DC, called, "DC's Young Animal." "DC is letting me have an imprint called Young Animal. The first book is 'Doom Patrol,'" Way said. It'll be written by Way, and illustrated by Nick Derington. "It's really weird," Way said. It'll pay tribute not just to Grant Morrison's famed run on the series, but the history of Doom Patrol.

>Also coming from Young Animal: "Shade, The Changing Girl" from writer Cecil Castellucci and artist Marley Zarcone. Cover by Becky Cloonan. "It's another alien, a woman alien, who's hiding in the body of a teenage girl that used to be a bully," Way said. "She has the Madness Vest. The Madness is kind of taking over."

Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit.
>>
>Another Young Animal book: "Cave Carson Has A Cybernetic Eye." Written by Way and Jon Rivera with art by Michael Avon Oeming. Way said that the comic will deliver on its promise of indeed explaining why Cave Carson -- a sci-fi spelunker introduced by DC back in 1960 -- has a cybernetic eye.

>Rounding out the lineup: "Mother Panic," written by Jody Houser, with art by Tommy Lee Edwards and John Paul Leon (covers by Edwards). "This one is set in Gotham," Way said. It'll focus on a new character. Lee pointed out that "Mother Panic" is a mature readers book.

My thoughts exactly. I'm going to enjoy the hell out of these while they last at least.

Doom Patrol? They look more like the Hipster Patrol.

12 issues.

That's probably how long they'll last.

Dang, I like all four.
>>
>>81568535
I'll buy every issues. I've quit drinking and I only at COD these days so I should have money left. These will be the first singles I buy.

There's NO WAY that DC's sales expectations for these books won't hew closer to Vertigo than traditional DC stuff.
>>
>Another announcement! In the spirit of 1985-1986's "DC Challenge," a 12-issue series where 12 teams of creators told one story, round-robin style, DiDio announced the "Kamandi Challenge," where 12 writers and 12 artists were "carefully selected" and then paired at "random" to tell a story starring Jack Kirby's Kamandi, The Last Boy On Earth.

>Here are the teams: Dan Abnett & Dale Eaglesham, Peter J. Tomasi & Neal Adams, Amanda Conner & Jimmy Palmiotti, James Tynion IV & Carlos D'Anda, Bill Willingham & Ivan Reis, Steve Orlando & Philip Tan, Marguerite Bennett & Dan Jurgens, Keith Giffen & Steve Rude, Tom King & Kevin Eastman, Greg Pak & Joe Prado, Rob Williams & Walter Simonson, Gail Simone & Ryan Sook and Len Wein & José Luis García-López. I wonder why Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti don't work together anymore.
The baseless rumor I'd like to spread is that Gray was pissed that Palmiotti would only allow him anal access to Conner during three-ways; Gray respected the husband/wife boundaries but still wanted to spitroast, and from there they eventually dissolved their friendship.

I assume it will be like this:

DC Comics is and always will be its own thing.

Vertigo will be for mature titles based on original, creator-owned properties.

Young Animal will be the middle point between the two, what "Sandman" and "Constantine" were before their conclusions. YA will be the cross between "DC Comics continuity" and "Mature comics for mature readers such as myself".

>My take is a brand-new take. I would say, to me- it feels like a cross between, kind of the super strange things that were going on around the time of Grant Morrison and Rachel Pollack, and then it has a lot of the spirit of the original series from the Sixties. It also has this indie kind of feel like Love and Rockets. Love and Rockets is a big influence.

>My take's very different, and I think I owe that to readers of Doom Patrol. I think if I came in and just did fan fiction of something then that would be no good. Aside from that, I'm a completely different writer than Grant. He's my hero and he's my mentor, but I can't go near what he did. Like, it's so great and it's so intellectual. There's a certain way he wrote that comic that I can't do, so I'm not going to.

neat
>>
>>81571153
It depends. Music fans can get really in deep. Like people buying 10+ copies of a CD so that it charts well.

>I know you also did a bit with Marvel and Spider-Man last year, and of course you have Umbrella Academy, so I'm curious if those projects will still exist, or is DC your official home now?
>It is my home, but at the same time I still have an amazing relationship with Dark Horse Comics. Umbrella Academy — so that book is coming out. I'll always love my Dark Horse family. I'm not exclusive with DC, but at the same time, I'm doing so much work right now, I can't really see doing anything else. I'm very invested in this imprint, so I'm going to devote a lot of attention to that, and I'm here for the long haul with it. I want Young Animal to be something that does stick around. I want this to be the start of a lot of different great, interesting, experimental books for DC and DCU characters and superheroes.

"I know Doom Patrol will be launching the imprint. What can we expect from your take on it?"

>Doom Patrol was a really crazy odyssey for me. It's the most important superhero comic book to me; it kind of always has been, since when I was young reading Grant Morrison's stuff, and then Rachel Pollack's run. After Rachel Pollack's run, I had really kind of moved on to more indie stuff, like Eightball and Hate by Peter Bagge. I started moving to Fantagraphics stuff, although I did read Love and Rockets early on because I had a friend who had a cool sister who collected Love and Rockets comics. But that was also my kind of gateway into Fantagraphics books.

>After that, I went back when they started reprinting [Doom Patrol], and I read all the original series from the Sixties. Those early Doom Patrols were also a big influence on Umbrella Academy as well. One of the things that I took away from re-reading all of the runs is that every writer came in, and every artist came in, and they did their own take; they did their own thing. I think my starting point was Grant's material, and then the further I got into the process, I started to draw from all of the continuity and all of the writers' runs. I have every issue of Doom Patrol that ever existed, so there's great things about everybody's run, and I'm trying to incorporate all of them.
>>

Personally, I don't really know or care about any of these characters or titles. I'm more interested in the Rebirth Superman family titles.

But, I'm still willing to give this Young Animals imprint a try. I'd like to keep an open mind and maybe find some new titles to look forward to.
>>
>>81571832

>>
>>81571751
I'm more excited for Rebirth in that all that money from double shipping will help keep these books alive
>>
>>81571751
This + Rebirth sounds like the best of both worlds.

I'm getting flashes of early 00s DC right now with the right mix of back to basic books, experimental stuff, and some lighthearted humorous books. The Hanna-Barbera stuff is icing on the cake.

There's some potential gems in Rebirth too

Between Rebirth, the Hanna Barbera stuff, Vertigo and now this I am pretty excited for DC stuff this year

Nothing wrong with having a preference. They're clearly trying to cater to a variety of people.

I think I might like the idea of this in general more, but I'd have to check the artists out first.

As I see it this gives everyone what they want.

The people who want traditional capefare get the regular DC books, and the ones who want genre titles and unique takes get DC Young Animals. The HB books then give you non-cape books of varrying genres and some capes too hopefully.

And the Young Animal books get a better shot at living because they're not the core of the line and not held to the regular standards. Vertigo will probably get a bit of an overhaul too to be more creator-driven.

Essentially DC found a way that allows everyone to win and get what they want. I love it.

>It feels great. A monthly book is a lot different than the limited series that I was doing — and still continue to do — with Umbrella Academy. We're on Series Three right now, and you really have a long time to write those things. You plan those out pretty far in advance. Being a comic-book writer for a monthly book is a whole different animal, and you end up putting a lot of yourself into it — a lot of personal things I feel. And that happens in Umbrella Academy, too, but it feels more immediate because you need material to sell those books.
