What did she mean by this?
One thing about fusions kind of confuses me. After two gems fuse, is that form pretty much set, only altering if one or more of the component gems regenerate into a different outfit, or does the form and personality evolve to reflect the relationship between the components? Like if Ruby and Sapphire were really mad at each other but were able to fuse anyway, would Garnet appear more monstrous? And if Lapis and Jasper fused again even just on neutral professional terms with each other, would Malachite be such a nightmare?

I think gem tech is just uncomprabale to advancement of human tech. In the past, when the gems came to Earth, their ships actually didnt look that technologically advanced. Most of the artifacts from the gem war age seem to run off of magic instead of actual engineered machines, like the Laser Light Cannons.
Homeworld probably used to be a highly magical world where everything seemed a little more natural, but now theyve forsaken magic for actual technology (powered by magic and science I guess, so magiscience.) What homeworld has seemingly done is given up on magic in favor of science, which initially wouldve set them back because of how useful magic was. However with gems their potential power seems limited, and so would the magic theyre able to work with. So when it came to advancing beyond what theyd known for their entire existence as a species, advancements probably slowed down.
Still though, we dont even know what else theyre capable of. The hand ship was just a prisoner ship, really. If they made a ship with the intention of being a battleship, shit would get crazy real fast. Bullet-hell games level of crazy.

Since when Gems are born they just stay that way, I think that the fusion would only change when a Gem have changed their clothes.
However, Steven is unique in that he can learn and grow like a normal human, so if he were to fuse with a Gem as a child, and then much later as a teen or an adult, the resulting fusion would probably look and act different from when it was formed while Steven was young.

I absolutely love how Rebecca Sugar managed to create a show that can be appreciated by everyone. There's a lesson for all audiences. No one's treated differently. There's something relatable for everyone.

That's my favorite thing about this show. It's helping get these great messages out there to kids, but it can also teach adults a lot. My pretty conservative 46-year-old dad living in the South has talked to me about how the symbolism in it has made him look at LGBTQ+ issues in a new lightwhich makes me a lot more comfortable being out to him :^), which is super amazing and unbelievable for a kids' cartoon that operates in 11-minute episodes.
