John K. is the guy who made Ren and Stimpy. Since then he's done absolutely nothing but bitch about how all other cartoons are absolute shit in the eyes of Our Lord and God, John K. He's notorious for missing deadlines and his kickstarter is two years overdue for a shitty little 10 minute animation that looks worse and worse with every new clip.

For a guy who talks so much about the fundamentals of animations, John Kricfalusi seriously doesn't seem to get the fundamentals of animation.

If you make every single fucking frame totally wacky and insane, the whole thing blends together into an unwatchable mess. Ren and Stimpy held on the funny faces, it didn't try and throw 12-24 funny faces at you every fucking second. A child who's just been given an animation program for the first time could figure out that mistake within half an hour.

>>
>>76331549
The kickstarter was never for the movie, it was for the full length storyreel so that they could show it to investors and hopefully get budgetting for the real movie. 400k is not even the beginnings of enough to make a 3D animated film, they need a budget of 40 million at least. Which is why they went with this strategy, which is outlined clearly on the kickstarter page.

It'll take a long time, if it ever does work.
>>
>>76331565
who knows, people probably totally forgot about it or don't feel it's worth fighting for the 5 bucks they spent. Either way it's on them.
>>
>>76331565
Everybody who pledged to the kickstarter in the first place fully realized that John K was a hack that couldn't make a deadline and was 80% certain to run away with their cash. It's not like this is a new or unexpected story with him. And yet they still pledged.

If you go onto the kickstarter page and check the comments, a lot of them are jumping for joy and ecstatic about getting a grab bag full of shit like pencil toppers and stickers.

Kickstarter has a clause saying that the person starting the person you're funding isn't really obligated to actually do anything. The one and only exception is that they MUST supply the backer rewards if offered. That's the only reason anyone had a case against the Pictures for Sad Children guy, but even then the legal action would need to be done through a class-action case, which is a pain in the ass to set up/
>>
I kinda wish he would've finished Weekend Pussy Hunt. That was pretty good.

I think John K. is more concerned with freezeframing cartoons and thinks that's how everyone watches them.

It says right in their terms of service

"The creator is solely responsible for fulfilling the promises made in their project. If theyтАЩre unable to satisfy the terms of this agreement, they may be subject to legal action by backers"

Both Kickstarter and Early access have gone through some changes. All of it benefits the consumer. Kickstarter doesn't give people Carte Blanche, but it is up to the consumer to take action.

it wasn't so much scams as it was people being way out of their depth and for kick starter to insure people are really committed to what they're doing in addition to have safe guards in place. To add on, he thinks that cartoons are shit because they're not cartoony, ala Bob Clampett Looney Tunes. Yet he someone has the gaul to call Hannah Barbara shit cartoons like Flinstones masterpieces because he grew up with them. He is the ultimate nostalgiafag.

He fails to understand that, as sad as it may sound, the animation part of an animated production is the LEAST important aspect. Writing, voice acting, design, consistency (Which I think is a skill in itself), hell even sound effects can play a more important role than how something is animated.

Just look at South Park and Aqua Teen. They don't even have fucking walk cycles and we're willing to enjoy them.

Despicable Me proved that you can not have all the bells and whistles of a Disney or Pixar CG film and you'll still make a billion bucks, because people loved the story and characters.

It's not just john K, it's normal human psychology.

If I asked you to write a short story about anything you wanted by next week. You probably wouldn't really have anything coherent or interesting.

But if I told you to write a story about Sci-fi Cowboy trio set in the Old west. You'd have characters, names, different ideas for designs, an outline of a story, etc.

It's mostly about focus and having a direction.

Given the freedom to do anything, Most people will do nothing.

Those aren't examples that prove me wrong, though.

>South Park
>Aqua Teen
>Rick & Morty
>Archer
>Dan Vs.
>Bojack Horseman
>Space Ghost: Coast to Coast
>Powerpuff Girls

All shows whose actual animation is either low to non-existent. But because at least two of the following are super strong:
>Writing
>Art Design/Direction
>Voice Work

People are willing to set aside their standards and watch them.
The Simpsons didn't start getting bad because the animation got stiffer, it got bad because the writing did. Since the voice work was the same, the poor art direction just made it drag it down further into people going "Cancel this shit". But if Simpsons was still funny 20+ years later, people would not mind the stiff animation as much as they do now. They only use those in arguments for why Simpsons is shit now as a cherry on the "WRITING SUCKS" sundae.

Korra has pretty damn good animation for a Western show and /co/ consistently hates on it. Tales of the EarthSea is fucking fantastic Ghibli animation but lacks the solid writing of any of Miyazaki films so it's a fucking bore.

>>76333372
There are some projects who dedicate themselves where the visual part is the more engaging part of the show. It mostly depends on the project and good animation is more suited to action, but for comedy, not so much. John K argues cartoons are shit because they aren't cartoony not understanding that things can be funny without having a funny face on it.

>>

>the project won't look nearly as good as it could've been.
But that doesn't mean it won't be good.

You could have the most amazingly animated thing ever and it could be shit because the story sucks on a fundamental level. Mr didney knew this, even they they always pushed for excellence in animation a good story always came first.

"Least important" is putting it strongly but masturbating to mechanical animation and fight choreography alone doesn't make good films.

I can't remember the name of the girl from Mezzo Forte, I fapped when I was led to believe she was getting raped because it was hot. But how can it be a successful story when they want you to masturbate to the plight of the protagonist? Umetsu is a great animator but not a great storyteller.

Its not a decline. His true style has emerged. After the shit he pulled during Ripping Friends everybody bailed, leaving him on his own. They were why his old stuff was so much better. They were why his older flash like Weekend Pussy hunt is far better animated than this crap.
>>
>>76333582

The most impressive animated bits in the whole show are things that are not-character related. Explosions, the water and earthquake animation when the Giant Head was approaching Earth, etc.

The actual characters themselves are typical puppeted, rather lifeless looking animation. There's no stretch and squash, everything is perfectly on-model (Because they re-use a model), no sense of exaggeration. It moves from Point A to Point B to tell you that, "Morty is running", but there's nothing God-tier about it. Wander Over Yonder is made with the same program and methods but is much bouncier than R&M. Unless you can provide me a clip that shows the characters in some God-Tier-looking scene and not just a really nice looking explosion.

Because we're on a board for western animation. What business would we have discussing Japanese animators and their work? Are you retarded?
>>
>>76335690
But western animation is shit.
>>
>>76333344
Isn't she working on another comic now? The Camp one? I'd love to see that done as a few shorts or something. Skadi was pleasant to the eye if a bit over exaggerated. The camp one feels like she's perfecting her own style away from John K.
>>
>>76335690
>>76335711

why are you unable to agree that 95% of western AND japanese animation is absolute quick-buck garbage

and that most of it is done overseas anyways by sweatshop animators
>>
>>76335756
because that would have him admit he was wrong and his ego can not stand that.
>>

>>

>>
>>76334183
Has he? I've only seen the bumps that finally showed and I assume those were years and years in the works. There was a version of one leaked or released years ago and the final product aired like a year ago. That short was seconds long. If John is really doing shorts for AS, its going to be years before they air. The Yogi/Ranger Smith stuff was very late but worth. The Jetsons ones were late and he had nothing to do with them aside having his name on them, he even hates them. Adult Party eps were finished a year late, late enough that Spike's animation block had been long dead.
>>
>>76335030
Whats up with weebs who come here complaining about western animation?
Wakfu and toonami should just be put on /a/.

Do you even know what the fuck animation is? Considering you're a weeaboo faggot, probably not since you get maybe one good looking scene every 30 episodes of your shitty adapted-from-a-shitty-manga show.
>>
>>76337130
Anime has more shading than you average shitty tumblrina show.
Fuck off.
>>
>>76335558
Japanese animators are great at getting expressive scenes out of a limited budget, they handle shooting on 2s and 3s a lot better than many Westerners.
>>
>>76335342
Yes, the animation company at the time exclusively made hentai. So the x-rated scenes had to be in there.
>>
Do the /a/ fanboys in here know that anime gets extremely low profits, even in their own country? It's pretty damn rare for an anime to actually be super successful, and when it is, they milk the shit out of it. Fullmetal Alchemist, Naruto, Dragonball. There's a reason why Toonami's blocktime keeps getting cut more and more.

That's what happens when Koreans will accept peanuts for their work.

If it weren't illegal, studios could offer peanuts for work as well but they won't get anyone of talent who will take the job. They'd rather ditch that profession than get paid shit for it.
>>
>>76337303
Didn't that take like 7+ years to get made? Also the story is extremely boring. Visuals are the only thing it has going for it, if they weren't great, nobody would even glance at it.

I really hated that about the 2000s when the anime boom hit, no one really understood what makes anime, anime. And those that did had a dated understanding from when they watched old 80s/90s shows.

Then you had shit like this at your library.

Japanese animators have gotten really good at making the most out of the fewest frames. The special effects, the quality of each drawing makes this look real fuckin good but if you look at the movement it's still choppy compared to disney, don bluth, richard williams... etc.
>>
>>76338011
The interesting thing is that if you freeze-frame it, the digital effects are running at twice the framerate as the 2D animation.

I have no personal opinion on John K. really but I think the gag's pretty funny. I'd rather watch twenty minutes of that than whatever followed it.
>>
>>76338144
Exactly. They try to trick you into thinking there is more to it by cutting to a Hospital and some federation building, but only because doing 90 straight minutes of pure racing would have literally killed their artists.

It's rare for an anime with spectacular visuals to have a story that can compete with it. Usually one has to suffer because they often don't have the budget to actually make revisions. They have to do first draft and done, and its usually written by people who are more illustrators than actual storytellers.

Isn't it more the same old stale-bread case of John probably having to work his ass off at first and with a team to keep him in check to produce results? And he had genuine talent, but then he got control with success, and used it to molest women and get lazy, and then lost all control and got shuffled aside when he showed he couldn't handle his shit?

Sort of sad. He could have been on of the greats, but blew his load on being a creep, having daddy issues, and acting like he had a goddamn leg to stand on while the rest of the animation world left him behind for being too slow to keep up.
>>
>>76338843
Yeah, no kidding. I remember Ren and Stimpy being pretty great with the comedic timing. Now his work is like a fucking parody of itself. I think he's got a bad case of George Lucas Syndrome
>>
>>76339119
I love at least that everyone John has burned, insulted, or perved on seems to generally preserve his art style, improve it, and then just walk off to success while he fights with making a 10 minute short.
>>

Nice, the animation is all customized frame by frame, instead of only customized key pose to key pose. Already better than most if not all cartoon animation out there today.

Maybe, Nemo got US and Japanese staff working on that movie but in the end the final film is 98% Japanese and was a mess in the end.

On the other hand Tiny Toons did the same thing as Nemo's end result and that was a masterpiece.

Something like Ulysses 31 & Sherlock Hound were only funded by the likes of France & Italy (Dic did have more to do with Ulysses 31 then RAI did with Sherlock Hound) when Blue Jacket Lupin III was only broadcasted early in Italy as they had nothing to do with it's production (Blue Jacket was funded by 5 years of outsourcing fees as Japanese sponsors refused to give TMS any money for any Lupin III projects except if it was a kid friendly special).

There is also this from archive.moe to look up.

Cans Without Labels is the best movie I've ever seen. Ever. Cans Without Labels is the most ingenious cartoon of this century, of any century! John K has created the perfect film: flawless in every way. He has sculpted a masterpiece, flawless and perfect. In fact, you can call it a masterpiece of flawlessness.

Cans Without Labels is the greatest thing to happen to animation since the invention of paper, and the most important thing to happen to mankind since the invention of fire. A one-of-a-kind experience, NOTHING on earth compares to this heartwarming, majestic, epic and beautiful work of art. If the greats from the Renaissance were alive today, they would KILL THEMSELVES for being so SHITTY compared to John K!

John K's poetic storytelling about an old man abusing two kids should be compared to the greatest works of animation. In fact, if I could, I would take a SHIT on every cartoon ever produced, because Cans Without Labels is the best FUCKING THING EVER!

No one said anime as a whole was, but there's a huge shit ton more anime to pick from covering literally everything that's as high quality as the very short golden age of Western animation that only lasted for a few decades in the first half of last century which goes contrary to what people who state things like 'The Japanese have no merit'.

Sure, there's also a ton of shit, but compare the output to what Hanna Barbera was pushing out. You have to go to Chargeman Ken levels of bad to match that.

In fact, letting the guest couch gag directors do full episodes is the only way I'd ever get back into the Simpsons.

He is the one who needs to do a Simpsons episode, not those 2 other guys.
