>That Pat Mills talking shit about the bad old days
>That Wagner being the old scot vaguely psychotic grandpa
>That Alan Grant doing his best Keith Richards impersonation
>"Judge Cal holding a fishbowl over his head"
>That Bishop/Diggle mea culpa
>That Gaiman talking about the Best Possible Timeline where Moore finished Halo Jones
>That Rescue Mission
>Seriously, Rebellion saving 2000AD is one of my favorite bits of comic book history
Good fucking shit.

Haven't seen it yet that's why I'm excited, fucking loving it, just at Nemesis now, one of the best things to ever come out of Toothy bar none well, the O'Neill/Talbot drawn stuff anyway).
>>
>>81529283
Oh shit forgot John Hicklenton, that run was like a nice switch in tone...more...subtle?
"Can I have my tent back please?"
"Why, are you going camping?"
"No, I just want my property back"

The bit where they talk about the Dick Bridge is so fucking good. And Mills discussing his influences.

>original artwork used as draft excluders or floor mats.
We live in the worst possible timeline.

Also that is not what I thought karen Berger looked or sounded like.
>>
>>81530286
That whole bit is fucking terrifying. An actual honest to God horror story. All that original fucking art, man... And yeah, I'm so happy they got Karen Berger in there.
>>
>>81530286
Yeah, well, it's only kiddie stuff, innit?!?! Fucking hell.
Rebellion takeover just beginning....

I'm not sure if this was intended, but I do feel quite sorry for Andy Diggle and the other 90s editor. Fleetway was run badly generally from one side, and I can well imagine the Mills/Grant/Wagner trio being an absolute nightmare to work with (and Mills in particular was not putting out his best that entire period).

Also loving pat Mills definitely not holding a grudge, no sir.
>>
>>81531490
I think Diggle's problem was that he was too cocky in a situation that didn't allow for it. By then, the talent had gone through Bishop, they were privy to how much Fleetway/IPC was fucking them over, they knew they were on a sinking ship. The last thing they needed was some young dude going "OK OLD FARTS THIS IS HOW WE DOING THIS NOW". Maybe if he'd been more upfront and sounded more aware of the situation people would've been more accepting, but then again I've never read his "manifesto" so I got no idea how it was.
And yeah, I sure as fuck wouldn't want to be on the other side of a Mills Bomb.

>mfw when the director of Timecrimes was a 2000AD fan heavily influenced by Chronocops
>>81531490
No, no grudge there, definitely.
Dude treats the fans like gold, though, met him a couple of times, so nice. John Higgins, on the other hand, was a prick.

He put it up on his blog a few years back, and a trimmed down version still forms the submissions guidelines. Its easy to find if you google for "Shot glass of rocket fuel", but its here (excuse the dots, the address sometimes trips the autoban for some reason).

http://andydiggle DOT blogspot DOT co DOT uk /2011/12/when-future-was-2000ad.html

Its honestly not that bad and works fine as a general mission statement, and I'm certain it formed part of a series of conversations with the other staff. He had after all been Dave Bishop's assistant and even Bishop admits he was a good influence. Diggle himself actually won an Eagle Award in 2001 for his editing, which admittedly only tells us that fans appreciated his work but must count for something.

Some of the resentment might have been avoided if there was a cover letter addressed to Mills in particular, but on the other hand by the time Diggle rolled around he was just a single, very inconsistent writer who was also trying to get work in the states and on the continent. If the stories of letterbombs and phone rants have even a fraction of truth it also paints him as a bit of an egomaniacal prima donna, and really, would you want to put up with that regularly?

Its quite possible that Mills was spoiling for a fight because Diggle had been brought on under the old regime, and given some of the crap Mills was turning in throughout the 90s I'm willing to bet Diggle gave him one.

I do think Mills still thinks of 2000AD as his baby (despite officially only editing it for the first 12 issues) and wants a lot of control over what it does or does not do without having to sit in the big chair and deal with all the boring stuff like "compromises" or "management".

Rather like Dredd, really.

Met Dave Gibbons at my first con, still got the Martha Washington sketch he did me framed ('91!) on my wall. Before anyone asks why I didn't ask for a more, er, famous character...I'm embarrassed to say I didn't read Watchmen 'til, I think, '93.

Agreed, yeah. I think he's mellowed out a lot recently but for years Mills had a vision of his own, both for 2000AD and for his characters. You can see it in his constant efforts in the late 80s/early 90s to tie all of his series together, an effort he's never quite given up on. Like there's a Mills-verse and then there's an Everyone Else-verse. Couple that with what must've been a growing resentment at IPC for treating 2000AD, his baby, like the bastard child they never wanted and it's easy to see him becoming an absolute pain to work with, especially if you were trying to streamline and revitalize the comic on a tight budget.
And thanks for the link!

Fucking awesome! Man, I wish I could go to a big UK convention some day. And walk outta there with a dozen Judge Hershey sketches...

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong I'd love to meet him some day. He's a fascinating raconteur and I've heard nothing but good things from his interactions with fans. He even seems to be a pretty generous and supportive mentor too, from his work with John Hicklenton and others. He's just very... I don't know, "precious" about his work, and does seem to let his ego get in the way from time to time.

>>81534476
Nothing wrong with Martha Washington, its a quality choice.

D'israeli / Matt Brooker (Leviathan, The Low Life) is also really nice.
>>
>>81535193
Hey, no worries. Its honestly quite helpful advice generally for action stories.

If you are saving your pennies for a Brit Cit trip, John Wagner and Andy Diggle are going to be at Thought Bubble this year along with Mike Mignola. I'm seriously thinking of going, despite having never been to a convention before because I'll finally have the time to go.

Yeah, I've actually been using Diggle's guidelines for panels and balloons on my Zarjaz submissions. Considering the amount of scripts they've accepted, he can't have been too wrong!
But reading the letter, I can now definitely see how much this must've pissed Mills off, because it reads like he's telling him how to do his job. And like you said, he probably sees 2000AD as his baby, so getting told by this kid to do what he thinks he's already been doing for the last 20-odd years must've felt like a huge insult.
Also, holy shit, go for it. I've only heard good things about Thought Bubble and their panels always sound awesome. And even if they didn't, I'd give an arm and a leg for a chance to shake Wagner's hand.

Someone storytimed the Klegg story D'Israeli did recently, love hat he's doing...Scarlet Traces was fucking amazing too.
Yeah Give Me Liberty's 3rd issue had just come out and I loved that. also Geof Darrow was scheduled as a guest but didn't turn up, spoke to Mike Richardson about it at the time and it was basically deadline issues that forced him to pull out, I was devastated!

>mfw one of Toothy's dopest artists called me "old school" 'cause the first thing I said to him was: "Crazy Barry Little Mo"!
>>
>>81535798
I'm certainly thinking long and hard about it. Wagner and Mignola alone would make it worth it, especially with Hellboy finally coming to an end.

On a personal note, its five years today since I first storytimed SHAKARA for /tg/. Think I might do it again for old time's sake once I've got some rest.

My favorite part of storytiming that was watching the /co/mrades go from "What the fuck is this hot garbage? I ain't reading this shit" to "Oh wow this is the best thing I've read all month holy shit."

>>81536299
I'd say go for it. To both ideas. I'm constantly terrified by the age of 2000AD's classic creators, so I'd take any chance to spend as much time as possible with them.

That's what I loved the most about that story. Well, apart from the humor, and Dredd being an old cranky bastard, and Hershey's faces... no, what I loved is that it came out literally the next week after the end of Ghosts, by Mark Sexton.
It was like the days of Bolland one week and McMahon the next and I fucking loved it. House style can suck a dick.
