Since Daredevil's came out, I've realized why Marvel is being more successful with its properties than DC has been. Saying that the MCU tries to be fun and lighthearted while DC tries to be grimdark isn't really true and the release of Daredevil shows that. I think the reason why Marvel has been more successful is because they let the source-material of each individual property dictate the tone of what the adaption is going to be. Iron Man wouldn't work as a gritty film and Daredevil wouldn't work as a lighthearted, slapstick, comedy adventure. DC, by making each of its films grounded, has shot themselves in the foot.

This. DC doesn't have it's own studio solely devoted to brining DC properties to the screen. They're just another facet of Warner Brothers IP catalogue and are treated as such.
It was also known as far back as the failure of Superman Returns that now until forever that all the DC films would be grimdark. There were rumblings that Warner Execs wanted Superman to be gritty and dark as far back as then as "if it worked for Batman it should work for Superman".

I think that holds true for the movies. But the Flash and Arrow are very different in tone and structure and work really well as they do. Though Arrow doesn't reflect the comics nearly as much as the flash seems to.
