It's the little things, like the way some of his inventions are just cobbled together from whatever shit happens to be lying around the house. He probably had his own team, but given the slightly darker nature of the show, they were probably killed on some adventure gone awry, leaving Rick as the jaded motherfucker he is today.
Hell, the whole Council of Ricks probably stems from a subconscious desire most Ricks have to belong to a big organization like KND again.
