Taking a peek at Aaron Diaz's twitter the first thing I see is this, and I swear I remember seeing him write this same self-congratulatory tweet many times before.
I ask you: are there any other webcomic artists who are constantly praising themselves as much as Diaz is? I don't remember seeing that even from the ones who DO have some merit to be proud of.
>>
>>71136300
Probably Ryan Sohmer.

Is this guy serious? He's like some kind of parody at this point.

Jon Rosenberg of "Multiverse" thinks very highly of his comic as a platform for commending on the racism of StarTrek TOG.
But he is a SJW troll so you can't take his shit seriously.
>>
Dawid Willis had a pretty self-congratulatory period after his first couple of paywall porn comics, proudly boasting on twitter about how great he is at drawing erotica and calling himself a porn lord. He's not exactly humble otherwise either, but considering how ridiculously boner-killingly poorly drawn the smut was his smugness over it really stood out.
>>
winston "constellation of trolls" rowntree comes to mind

but i don't think anyone comes close to diaz, he's the absolute apex of webcomic narcissism. i can't believe he still has the balls to lecture people on acceptable use of cheesecake

>>71136896
pretty sure he was joking about that

it was lame and not funny at all but still
>>
>>71136354
This. Easy mode, but this.
Also CWC but at least Sonichu is a good read.
>>
>>71136354

Met him in real life at a convention. The undeserved smugness just radiates off of him. I was a fan of his fantasy comic at the time, knowing nothing else about him, so I went to get an autograph from him and the artist. He was such a jackass and so put off about signing something for a fan that combined with his undeserved ego he turned me off of his comic right then and there.
>>
>>71137553
Or writing a story. He can just not stop tweeting "advice" about how to construct a good story and write relateable characters while picking apart other people's work. Which is ridiculous when the only good thing about his own magnum opus is the (cheesecakey) art.
>>
>>71137553

Willis is never joking, all his characters are literally him.

Aaron "Ketchup on Steak" Diaz
>>

>pretty sure he was joking about that
Further proof that Willis does not know how to make a joke funny.
>>
>>71136519
Sometimes I like to think that "Aaron Diaz" is nothing but this big performance by some talented artist who wants to see how the public would react to the most smug, self-centered, lazy, "feminist" artist character.

If he were a character in a fictional story he'd be pointed out as the obviously unrealistic strawman, he's just that ridiculous of a person. I'd hate to have him on my side of any argument.
>>
>>71137876
The whole Ashley Burch lust he has going on is very unhealthy.

It's one thing to obsess over some woman that turned him down, but to draw her with limbs cut off as fetish fuel with his own self insert following her like a puppy is freaky. You just know the balding beard goober has serious issues. Apparently he has a deep seated hatred for fit alpha types too, notice his comics are always featuring thin effeminate men.
>>
>>71136300
If it's so good, why does he need to go fishing for compliments on twitter?
>>
>>71138371
>Ashley Burch
What exactly was this again? All I remember is that people thought Kimiko looked like her, but I don't think I've seen anything concrete besides that.

Why has KC Green become so shitty?

>character revels in crushing depression for five panels
>sixth panel is a fart joke
>GENIUS, HUMOR HAS BEEN SUBVERTED ONCE AGAIN

Anime Club was so good, I even bought the book.
>>
>>71138461
Inflated patreon that far exceeds the artist's skill, talent, or ability.

That is success for webcomics.

Most of them are cunts because when someone's good at drawing they don't have to pay their dues, they get praised and fawned over just for drawing, so they tend to think they're superior to everyone. They never had to work for praise. In most of these webcomic cases, at least, and I can't think of an exception.
>>
>>71138484
>They never had to work for praise.

Well, by definition they had to work to get good at drawing.

>>

>>
>>71136300
>publicly declaring your work to be "really good" after personally rereading it
I don't care how good the work is, this is never not a smug fucking thing to do. I don't even think it's a bad work (it might even be good, I guess), but this is just so masturbatory.

Christ, how divorced from reality do you have to be to not have some part of your brain stop you from doing this? "Hold up son, I think we might be going a little far here. Maybe just say you're proud of the work or something."

This is why people can't be trusted with shit like twitter. They just stop self reflecting and just spew every thought out into the world without sanity checking it in their brain.
>>
>>71138474
>>71138464

So it's based on nothing then? Kimiko is a cartoon character. She could look like a million different people. You need something more than "same haircut and female" to base an entire accusation on.

I mean, I hate the guy too, but lets make fun of him for the stupid shit he's actually said and done, there's no need to make up stupid rumors.
>>
>>71138474
>connected the dots

There's not much to the similarity other than "slim girl with short dark hair" though. Maybe that's just the type of girl he likes.
>>

>>
>>71138512
Don't worry, anon. The fact you're even reflecting on this is a good sign.

There are plenty of good artists who don't have unchecked egos. In fact, many have the opposite problem, where they have easily rustled jimmies when it comes to their perception of their skills and work. But they're still good artists with good work and plenty of fans.

Just fight the good fight every day and remember to always try to be better.

The rumor's been around for ages.

It's particularly hilarious when you consider how often the creep googles his own name and sometimes comes to /co/. There was a previous thread where some "anon" mysteriously lost his shit and carried on an autistic argument against the rumor being true.

...So naturally it must be true, if only for the comedic value of baldy beard boy's tantrums.
>>
>>71138595
I really do want it to be true because it's fucking hilarious, I just wish we had more to go on. But I guess it's the sort of thing that can never really be proven unless he admits it.

Yeah that's the shitty part. Especially when their comic is shit and they don't upload their content (if you can even call the short work content) consistently. I mean even if they can draw really well I still want to read something interesting or atleast funny. If I want good-looking panels I'd rather look up some web artist.
>>
>>71138527

Thanks, I will. Obamacare actually kinda came through and I got depression medicine so maybe one day it'll fully kick in and I can just make stuff just to make it rather than to push away the crazy thoughts.
>>
>>71138679

>maybe one day it'll fully kick in

It can take a while for this, so if medication is the way you wanna go make sure you stick at it. Can you not get psychotherapy or cognitive behavioural therapy on Obamacare? They did way more for me than medication ever did, and there's no point in putting all your eggs in one basket.

>>
>>71138766

>>
>>71138732
There's 3 stages to diaz

Some of his really old work is actually pretty good. There's no central storyline and it's all very bizarre.

Then he starts to get shitty when he settles down with his cast of recurring characters (kimiko, the twins).

When he gets rid of the twins, it's pure shit. Not because the twins were that good, it's just that he apparently wanted to write a super serious story about kimiko. I think Dark Science - the storyline he mentions in the OP - is the start of this phase.
>>
Andrew Hussie had a period when he was totally up his own ass, at about the peak of Homestuck's popularity. So some time after it had begun its descent into shit.

Lately he's had pretty much nothing to do with the fanbase, though, he closed his tumblr and hasn't done a Q&A or anything in years. Guess he got tired of it all.
>>
>>71138766
it's about having the laziest excuse to use the word transhumanism in comic form. Also lazily copying disney's art style.
>>
>>71138804
But what the fuck is the plot? Like..summarize what's happening cause I have fucking clue.
>>
>>71138819
Creators should never closely interact with their fans in the first place. Twitter and tumblr kind of force them to participate, though.
>>
>>71138847
CLOSELY interacting with their fans is one thing, but for a long while he actually had a pretty good thing going with them. People would ask him shit, and he'd either give a funny joke answer or he'd go on a long, cool explanation of shit. I sort of miss it.

Obviously, creators who have too much to do with their fans can get shit on for it, look at how tumblr turned on the Ava's Demon chick.
>>
>>71138732
Me neither, I gave up after a few chapters, It doesn't really draw you in and each dialog between characters is an excuse for him to explain yet another scientific fact that is too disconnected from the situation they're in. It's like the characters carry some encyclopedia and recite some weird fact out of the book.
>>
>>71138840
Oh I don't know, I stopped paying attention. That first storyline, dark science, I think it's about a super advanced ai robot, the singularity, some other bullshit. I haven't read it in years.

It's really not worth trying to understand, though.

Incidentally, if you want to check out the (actually good) webcomic that Diaz was trying to ape, when he first started out, it's called A Lesson is Learned But the Damage is Irreversible.

Diaz is a shitbag and the only think he's ever made that was any good was the philosophy D&D comic parody thing. That's literally it. Every other thing is just him masturbating with a Cintiq.

Dark Science is actually pretty terrible.
>>
>>71138933
I still like his style, it's just that everything else about him and his comic is shit.
>>
>>71138847
There are plenty of artists who can manage the delicate balance of fan interaction and not being a shit. No where near all of them or even a majority, I fear, but there are good artists who do good work and can still manage to communicate with fans like rational people and not descend into self wanking and outrage.

Ashley Cope is one of those, and routinely answers questions about her comic or just shoots the shit with fans. She also has a dedicated tumblr for the comic, separate from her more personal tumblr. Which, frankly, seems like a must for the modern internet.
>>
>>71138957
The guy who does Endtown is pretty great too, when /co/ did a bunch of pictures for his birthday and sent them to him, he sent back a picture of his own thanking them. And he also answers questions about stuff too without spoiling plotlines, pretty decent guy all around.

Stage 2: pretty bad, very pseudointellgectual

Its weird that I actually finding myself needing to explain this but here we are...

What. the. fuck. do you think twitter is for?

Its nothing but an advertising tool for self-promotion. Some of you seem to have got into your head after seeing some funny tweets out there that such is what the medium is for, its a free entertainment platform for you and self-promotion is an atypical faux pas usage, but you've got it exactly backwards.

Do you people look at tv ads and are baffled why, say, Pepsi is talking about its own product and not promoting health insurance or weather-resistant house siding? Of course not, its a pepsi ad for pepsi. In the exact same light, you're choosing to read an ad for an artist then wondering what the fuck the artist is advertising himself for. Kindly remove your head from your ass.
>>
>>71138588
The DA artist comments explain everything:

>OKay... To answer such questions:
>
>YES, this will be Cat and Tanya's child (or children).
>YES, Cat R Waul is the biological father.
>YES, as a miricle, Cat impregnated Tayna.
>YES, involving sex duh (I'll leave it up to your imagination, or my brother, of what went on in the bedroom)
>As from the film Mr & Mrs Smith the scale is definitely a 10.
>
>YES, Tayna will have a safe birth.
>I also like the triplets idea...
>YES, the children will be generally mouse form and size (with a few cat features different on each child) One will have cat eyes!

It's hard to say if artists who manage to not get into terrible interactions with their fans are a minority or not, because those artists who refrain from spewing their every thought on twitter or Tumblr and instead stay in the shadows are boring to discuss, which is why they're forgotten and and everyone only notice the outspoken ones. There's a lot of comics that I read and enjoy but barely even remember the name of the author because they don't scream LOOK AT MEEE!!!! between every update.
Even with the really successful webcomics I could probably find just as many unremarkable artists as the ones who have gone batshit insane from their popularity, but they're hard to remember off hand because of their relative grey man approach to their success.

>>
>>71138933

There there anon.

I started working on my art and drawing because of bleedman.

I can probably draw better than diaz at this point.
>>
>>71138732
The first storyline is fairly simple, Robot from the future goes back in time and is followed by Futre Amish people who want to stop Kim from becoming Cyberdyne.

Dark Science is about Kim going to her father's Metropolitan, as in modeled after Metropolis, and then some stupid bullshit happens and Kim and Diaz go off to discover the secret of Dark Science, which is likened to Plato's allegory of the cave, alluded to in the most clumsy, paraphrasing of a wikipedia article ever.

Also, he had the gall to call the second book Purgatorio, because he deserves to do that.

He disn't say Diaz was talented, he said he likes to think of the whole Dresden Codak fiasco and Aaron Diaz as a fake experiment puppeteered by some mastermind artist to make the most ridiculously enraging comic-to-artist combination ever. Or comedy, or inane bullshit, or in the case of one I particularity like, sci-fi/fantasy stories. Shoehorning a communication medium into a narrow definition because that's what some people use ti for is asinine.

By your logic, webcomic sites and personal blogs exist as nothing but advertising tools.

Self-promotion isn't a fax-pas, but public auto-fellatio

Aaron Diaz actually is apparently aware of what competent panel design is, but he thinks he's above it.

You know how they say, to learn the rules before you bend them? Well, Diaz thinks that means that you have to break them to be a master.

There are comic artists who can eschew classic panel design and do it well, but Diaz is not one of them, but he fails to understand this particular fault, as he does all his personal faults.

He's like a legitimate child. Nothing is his fault.

Follow Diaz's comics and you follow all the fetishes he gathered over the years and crammed into one character.

So far in Kimiko you have:

- short hair with white streak

- amputation and cyborg limbs
- muscles
- scars/unnatural lines on skin

I wonder if she'll get a cyborg dick when Diaz discover futa.

Squirrel girl used to look like a fucking troll.

Honestly she should really be plain. I'd love to see more variations in comic book characters. I feel like the art in the SG book COULD be that, but it's so rushed and sloppy for whatever reason. We even see that the artist is capable of something more polished from his personal work.
>>
>>71139333
>Follow Diaz's comics and you follow all the fetishes he gathered over the years and crammed into one character
That's the thing I particularly hate about Diaz.

He's essentially a fanfiction writer, a bad one at that, but since he possesses a modicum of talent, it's excused.

I swear to christ, we've reached the point that retards call any art that isn't hideous, even if it lacks anything approaching sexualized imagery, "fap bait".

Squirrel Girl is fully covered in the image and you can barely see her body at all, her hips are obscured by cake and squirrels, her chest is jacket-covered and obscured by her arm, her face is kinda dorky-looking and she has the grandest of buck teeth. The only thing you could even remotely call "fap bait" is that she does look female and isn't a land whale. And thats the new barrier of entry for artwork being rejected as nothing but bottled sexism.

I bet dumbasses look at that image and call it "healthism" for showing nuts, fruits, and vegetables - its obviously fat-shaming in action.

Upon looking at it while I was digging it up, I realized the other person was following the spacial layouts of the page, rather than the bubbles. You can see it based on the unbroken like they take with GC page, clearly confused by the lack of distinct paneling, but the clearly delineated and broken lines they take on DC. It's still sort of wrong even on that account, because you're supposed to follow Antimony's hair in the traditional, english reading fashion being your guide.

Still kind of insane. When this happens is usually when you take a step back and sanity check your thinking.

The body isn't too bad, if very stylized. The problem is in the face - it's very awkwardly proportioned, and would work much better for a character like Toad from X-men or something rather than on the main character, she just looks too stupid and lumpy to draw much appeal.

This is a very quick and crap edit, but giving her slightly larger pupils and just moving her features down her face a little already does wonders, imo.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but Sailor Moon is in there too.

Cal Arts and the Disney Princesses are the big one though. You are correct.

The thing about the "Tumblr" style is that it is hugely varied within its samey looking style.

It's like anime, you can tell an anime's an anime despite the fact that they don't all look the exact same. Same goes for Tumblr, that while it is all derived from the same general sources, the artists manage to adapt them into different combinations while still looking homogenous.

>>71139456
Diaz's panel orientation is apparently a feat of skill on his part. A skill which he doesn't possess at the level he thinks.

A similar thing can be seen in the Latin Poets, who were skilled enough to pull of such feats; they'd use the nature of Latin to make convoluted page long sentences which weren't clear until the last word.

Gimme a sec. Ok.

Bugs Bunny is a well executed stylized design. Even though his proportions aren't "ideal" or anything, he remains appealing and nothing jumps out as being overtly wrong. Even though he has tube legs, they have clear joints without the need to breaks style by resorting to obvious knees. From this model sheet, it's really easy to tell that the artist had a clear understanding of posing, gesture, and even anatomy.

Moen doesn't. Her anatomy varies wildly from sketch to sketch, and facial features seem to slide around. Consistency of the mark of actual skill, and it can be found all over Bugs' model sheet - the consistency is rock solid. Moen's isn't. Giruhiru's cover isn't more appealing because it's cuter - it's more appealing because it's more technically sound. Despite having much less contrast when you compare the two - >>71139317

Giruhiru's is a better composition that's more dynamic overall. Moen relies on contrast because her composition is weak. She honestly seems like an artist who only got so far with fundamentals, to a "good enough" place. But as >>71139652 shows she is really very lacking.

Count again.

>>71139865
This one's not so bad. Why can't the whole book look like this?
>>
>>71139843
>Howard the Duck

Jesus christ the redesign sucks, he's not cute or sexy at all anymore, has the artist ever even looked at a human being
>>

That's a curled up pinky.

top jej
>>
>>71139889
>them teeny tiny feet

It actually isn't too bad, it's just mediocre
>>
>>71139913

You really believe that's how a finger works?
>>
>>71139909
Wow you just hate it because you can't fap to it anymore! #notallducks
>>

>pointing out bad anatomy is "making fun"
Nice strawman; now stop making excuses for bad art.
>>
>>71139349

This. Squirrle girl used to have clown makeup and an overbite large enough for her to be adopted into the House of Habsburg.

>Not understanding what stylization is

Are you being dense on purpose? Or are you some kind of retard tripfag with shit opinions I should be ignoring?
>>
>>71139016
Millions in marketing research is done to make TV commercials appealing somehow but still convey an advertisement. We're just asking for some mild humor.
>>
>>71139928

Look at the art. Do you really think the artist knows how faces work, much less fingers?

It's a pinky. A really shittily drawn pinky. That's what you should take away from this. This artist is shit no matter what happened to that hand.
>>
>>71139928
Yes anon I do believe fingers bend. You can test this theory out yourself.

Funny that you should choose that to strawman at, because the artist of that picture obviously has.

>>71139949
Stylization requires effort and practise too, dingus. And the pic has a pretty fucking ugly one.

There's stylization and then there's Erica Henderon's work on Unbeatable Squirrel Girl.

this post makes me think you don't actually know what LOOMIS is

That fucking alt text at the bottom makes me want to drop a baby out a window.

Right, you can shit on the stylization if you want, but at least be smart enough to not say it's bad because of "bad anatomy".
>>
>>71139937
there was a reason why she was a joke and part of a joke team like Great Lakes Avengers. She looked like shit and her powers were shit. Trying to make her mainstream has done nothing but kill her as a character
>>
>>71139996

It's quite amazing that she can run with her pelvis twisted like that, much less that she can put her chest and pelvis at a ninety degree angle.

Americans made their bed, now they gotta sleep in it, where's the problem? Folks like that retard are simply quoting norms about racial identity.

but it's fun
>>
>>71140020
I didn't even see that. Ugh, alt text in a print comic? I'd call it a joke but it's more cringe-until-your-spine-snaps-and-you-embrace-sweet-death than anything near funny.
>>
>>71138482
Depressed artists are common victims of the SJW cult.
>>
>>71140029
But it's not stylized. It's just a mishmash of poorly grasped anatomical notions. This >>71139873 is stylized, squirrel girl is a poor attempt at stylizing something the artist has nearly no grasp on.

Jesus, Anon, you are one step up from screaming It's my style on DA.
>>
>>71140051
Yeah, It's kind of sad that /co/ has to criticise bad anatomy and the cartoonish style when the actual writing is the problem. But it's not like /co/ actually gets funnybooks.
>>
>>71140066
It's clearly stylized. That's the definition of the word. Whether or not it's done badly is a different story.

Personally I think her choice of shapes is fine in that one image here >>71139640, but she just lacks the technical skill to pull it off. Not to mention her consistency is super bad, so even if she did draw it nicely it would change panel to panel.
>>
>>71136300
Is this a tumblr thing or just a U.S thing?
>>
>>71140064
KC Green was never depressed, just starved for attention because nobody cared about his awful comic anymore.

>Anime Club was so good, I even bought the book

KC Green got away with ripping off The Eltingville Club
>>
>>71140116
It was much more concise and funnier though. They're both good, but Anime Club was way better.

>>71140102
"Stylized" would seem to imply that the basic anatomy was applied, and then exaggerated and deformed. When it's just drawn deformed, that's all it is.
>>
>>71136623
The NoJokenberg? Yeah, that along with persecution complex.
That Star Trek strip was so awful it killed Nimoy.
>>
>>71139108
I think she's badly misreading the cues here. Anon will fap to ANYTHING, and a bunch of fuckers here actually have SG at waiful level. Mostly from the GLA appearances.

The fact that anon has to make such a heroic effort to fap to this shit should be a HUGE red flag.

Self-awareness in David WIllis' mind is limited to "I realize toys I collect are actually made for children".
