So which is the most prominent one, the "gladiator" variant? I was introduced to him more in JL cartoon than the comics, and in JL he was more of a spiritual tyrant.

Despero is a confusing character. This depiction of him portrays him as somewhat of a brawler, but usually he relies on his psychic abilities. He's died, regenerated, been de-aged, swapped bodies more times than you can count, died and regenerated again. The one constant of Despero is that he fucking hates the Justice League.
