Spider-Man is back on the Marvel Payroll Thread #2

Footnotes and clarity:

>Under the deal, the new Spider-Man will first appear in a Marvel film from Marvel's Cinematic Universe (MCU). Sony Pictures will thereafter release the next installment of its $4 billion Spider-Man franchise, on July 28, 2017, in a film that will be co-produced by Kevin Feige and his expert team at Marvel and Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise launch for the studio 13 years ago. Together, they will collaborate on a new creative direction for the web slinger. Sony Pictures will continue to finance, distribute, own and have final creative control of the Spider-Man films.

>Marvel and Sony Pictures are also exploring opportunities to integrate characters from the MCU into future Spider-Man films.

>As part of the revamp, the new Spider-Man will first appear in a Marvel film. The companies are not revealing details but that movie is likely to be Captain America: Civil War; the character was a major player in the comics storyline. Andrew Garfield is not expected to reprise the character.

>Four future instalments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have received new release dates through 2019, including Thor’s next solo adventure as well as the first films for Black Panther, Captain Marvel and the Inhumans!

>Marvel’s “Thor: Ragnarok” will hit theaters November 3, 2017. The following year, Marvel’s “Black Panther” will make its way to theaters on July 6, 2018, and Marvel’s “Captain Marvel” on November 2, 2018. Finally, Marvel’s “Inhumans” will now debut in theaters July 12, 2019.

>The previously announced dates for Marvel’s “Avengers: Infinity War Part 1” and “Avengers: Infinity War Part 2” on May 4, 2018 and May 3, 2019, respectively, remain unchanged.

jesus fucking christ we are inthe future

I'm not sure how I can take the year up going any further than 2015

I can't deal with this
>>
Because of how its worded its sad to see the Civil war play out like it did in the comics but Gladly SPIDERMAN is coming back
>>
>>69375414
Why should I be happy about this?

Amazing Spider-Man 2 wasn't that bad, and now that Marvel is getting Spidey back they're going to shove his 'new' movies in our face when they begin production.

Which will mean more people will read the current Spider-Man comics, meaning Dan Slott is on them for even longer. They'll also milk the shit out of him, and I just can't say I'm all too pleased with Spidey on Avengers. He works better solo.
>>
What stopping them from making an AoU post-credits scene featuring spiderman?
>>
No J.K. Simmons no party
>>
>>69375446
I disagree, I would love to see a Miles Morales adapted from the comics. About as interesting as current Amazing anyway. Fuck Spider-Verse was much worse than current Miles.

Miles isn't perfect but it's the best comic Spider-Man currently being printed.

It's going to be Jack O'Conell

It'll be fun to see the how people will try and defend the ASM movies now, especially 2.

Expect 300% more "Well sure it was a clusterfuck with no plot, no actual villain central to the story and no character arc with tonal whiplash so bad it could snap Gwen Stacy's neck, but at least it's not an MCU movie!"

Also something something interesting failure over bland MCU something something.

>>
>>69375462
To be honest I don't think Spider-man being in MCU Civil War is good from a story telling perspective. Well, the revealing his identity part.
I don't think that scene and plotline would have that much of an impact as it would if THIS incarnation of Spider-man already had an established character/story behind him.
This is the first time we will be introduced to this Spider-Man. Will audiences be able to comprehend the gravity or significance of Peter's reveal? This Peter who we have never seen before? We know only, what, an hour of information about (if that)?
I think it would have been better to at least have one stand alone "new" Spider-man movie before Civil War.

I hope that the new Spiderman Movie is a Prequel to Civil War. They should begin with the News footage and how all of it lead to this point of his reveal and then Peter should tell his Story how he became Spiderman, how he meet Fury and Ironman, what he did in the Battle for New York and the Ultron incident. And Civil War out of his Perspective. It should be like Forrest Gump with Spiderman.

>>
>>69375665

In name only. They'll be bullied around by Marvel and Disney despite all that.
>>
>>69375604
No, it doesn't. Marvel and Sony were always cordial and collaborative, whereas Marvel and Fox hate eachother. Rights won't revert.
>>
>>69375665
Because Sony knows how much Marvel wants him back. Having complete control prior to this deal was ALL the leverage Sony had. It was either "give us complete control or you continue to never have Spider-man in MCU".
>>
>>69375507

What's stopping Sony to do a shit movie afterwards? Seriously I just want good movies i don't care about cinematic universes, although deeply enjoy them, what if Sony make a complete mess like Amazing Spiderman again?
>>
>>69375718

Lizard is an undercooked mess of a villain and the "Ben's killer' storyline is downright terrible. The action is really boring outside of the school sequence and that crane sequence is fucking retarded, even more so then the "YOU MESS WIT ONE OF UZ" scene from the RaimiMan movies.

I know there's going to be a lot of "HURR RAIMI FANBOY" shit, but I was honestly excited for this movie. SM3 proved we needed new blood and getting an indie director like Webb seemed like a good idea, also with a genuinely great cast. But they fucked up every aspect to make it a franchise-builder instead of an actual movie. it's the worst example since Iron Man 2, only to be topped by ASM2. It's a nothing movie, it's a fucking glorified TV pilot and it's practically shot like one. Webb's direction was amateur hour workmanlike crap.

It's better then ASM2 and SM3, but it's not good.
>>
>>69375725
I'm only really excited for Cap 3 and Infinity War, thankfully they didn't delay those.
>>
>>69375713
The interview the director gave where he was talking about going with an approach similar to "The Fly" is more a reason why people "defend it" (not that a movie that isn't even out yet needs to be defended).
I'm genuinely curious, it should be different from other cape films, which in itself is kind of a good thing.

I disagree. The storyline was solid, and I enjoyed the Lizard. I also liked the character progression and how Uncle Ben's killer factored in it. The action scenes were entertaining enough, and I actually love the crane scene. Probably my favorite swing yet in all five movies.

And it wasn't really trying to build a franchise as much as it was setting up the Green Goblin, before Sony intervened and cut half the plot in half. The parents subplot wad originally a one-off.

>>
>>69375814
I never said anything about origin story. I don't want another origin story. It's about character development. Yes this is still Spider-man, but it's a NEW Spider-man.
There needs to be some character building before you drop a massive twist like Civil War on a character. That moment "worked" (debatable) in the comics because of all the history behind the character. This new Spider-man won't have that.
Lets say for argument's sake that Black Panther remains in Civil War instead of Spider-Man. T'Challa reveals his identity to the world in the movie. Would you care?
>>
>>69375812

Exactly. That scene is campy and silly, but within the cultural context of he time it's forgivable. Also it does sort of feel like something out of the Ditko/Lee Spider-Man era, which is what the lifeblood of that first film was made up of.

That crane sequence is a campy moment in a film that's going for Nolan-esque serious drama. It had no place in the rest of the movie.

>>69375833

Because all of them have been better then the Webb films. I don't give a shit if Marvel, Fox, or even fucking WB owns Peter at this point. Hell, sell it to Archibald the Hobo King for all I care, but Sony has shown nothing but complete and utter incompetence with the ASM franchise and the leaked documents only bear that out even more.

Now we have someone other then the fucking monkeys at Sony overseeing the project. That's all I want.

What they are doing is lending the character over and with good will and cooperation continue to make Spidey movies in the MCU continuity. Hell, they might just add the amazing series as background already.

But despite that I don't think they should or will reveal his identity because it's the first movie and they'd have to One More Day it immediately.

Wait, how would we react if the first MCU Spidey movie was actually One More Day?

Isn't there a matter of "first appearance " or something like that, tough? Like, Deaht head appeared first in the Marvel continuity, before becoming a recuring vilain in the Transformers Marvel comic so that MArvel can claim it is a Marvel character and not a Transformers character.

By appearing in the MCU first, Couldn't Marvel claim that iteration of Spiderman belong to them and if they think Sony disrespec that iteration of Spiderman, they can go "no, fuck, this isn't our Spider Man, Sony is like, tottaly a different Spiderman than Mine Spiderman and Sony can't play with my other toys anymore". or something like that?

>Andrew Garfield is not expected to reprise the character.

Probably for the best.

For all its (many) faults, the ASM series pretty much ran on the strength of Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone's chemistry. There's a reason why they cut the MJ scenes out of ASM2 when there was all that other bloat they could've picked. With her character dead, ASM3 would've sputtered.

Unless they did some sort of riff on the Clone Saga, like when they brought Gwen back as Ultimate Carnage, but there's way too many ways for that sort of plot to go wrong.
>>
I just wish they'd do a little side character stuff. I want to see Pete be all Archie Andrews with MJ and Deb Whitman while blowing off steam by pranking Flash after JJJ has chewed him out for shitty pics. I wasnt a TSSM movie, I guess

Usually studio contracts involving multi picture deal are not mutually binding, meaning studios usually can opt out of the contract but the actor cannot (like in the case of Terrence Howard with IM 2)

Sony very likely has no legal obligation to continue using Garfield. Marvel has already made their dislike of Garfield known so its very likely we get a new person as Spider-Man
>>
>>69375601
fund it
>>
So what level of involvement does Marvel even have with the stand-alone Spidey films because it sounds like Sony's still able to continue making shitty Spider-Man movies.
>>
>>69375941

I have no idea why anyone would want Miles. As a fan of Ultimate Spider-man, I've been immensely disappointed with Miles; He doesn't even have his own plotline! All his stories were the loose ends cribbed from Peter Parker...Until they outright brought Peter Parker back!

So far, his storylines involved:
1.) Being bitten by another spider, similar to the one that created Peter Parker.
2.) Becoming Spider-man in order to take up Peter's legacy.
3.) Dealing with Venom, a creature created by Peter's father.
4.) Ultimates.
5.) Fighting Norman Osborn, Peter Parker's nemesis. (And dealing with Peter returning to life.)

Even Bendis couldn't make Miles interesting. He has, what, his supervillain uncle? (Whom he killed.) His dad, a former SHIELD agent?

Uh...Norman Osborn being obsessed with Miles, too? What does Miles have going for him, besides the Venom Blast?

Miles is never going to happen the same way a Kamala Khan movie isn't going to happen. And it has nothing to do with race, as much as people claim otherwise.

They're both too new. They barely have a consistent supporting cast, unique rogues gallery or iconic story arcs to their name. There's nothing to work with in either case for a set of movies, they're un-molded characters.

We honestly have a better chance of getting a 2099 Spidery movie then a Miles Morales movie. And as much as my dick would get rock hard at that idea, that's also never going to happen either.
>>
>>69375880
I'll give you my quick and dirty, probably WRONG, opinion:

People on /co/ shit on IM3, but I got to see it opening night for free and it was a fucking blast. Loved every second of it. I get people complaining about the lack of Iron Man, the over saturation of the suits at the end, and the fire powers people, but the movies' main appeal has always been RDJ's Stark, and this was by far the best of the IM movies to for that.

Captain America was okay. This is probably about the baseline of what people mean by "bland MCU films." I'd probably place it on par with ASM, if not a little better. Not exactly making a hard list here, though.

Avengers was fun to watch at the time, but I've only seen it once and will admit the critique it gets around here is probably accurate for the most part. It was probably mostly the hype from the preceeding movies. I distinctly remember being a little annoyed at how all the characters, regardless of their personalities, ended up quipping and being WHEDON characters even back then.

GotG was every Avengers was trying to be, but better. It managed to do an ensemble movie with having 5 movies to set up the characters before hand. It also managed to be a fun movie without falling into the "everyone talks like a Whedon character" banter of Avengers and actually had some moving moments. It's the only movie aside from IM1 I've seen twice, in theaters no less, and I'd easily see it again. There are good reasons it took off like it did and blew ASM2 out of the water domestically (though not overall).

Aside from that, both Thor movies were pretty forgettable aside from a few amusing scenes. It's pretty obvious Loki stole the show in Thor 1 and Avengers and so they squeezed him into Thor 2. Never seen the Incredible Hulk, probably never going too. I might see a Mark Ruffalo Hulk film, or even just "Stark and Banner's Wild Science Adventure." Looking forward to seeing what happens with the Hulk in AoU.

All in all, though, the majority of the Hype can be summed us by the MCU being THE Marvel universe representation on the big screen. Spider-Man being a part of that is a big thing.

We've had Marvel movies for years, but the MCU is the one that brings all this stuff together and has at least a consistent ability to put at passable at worst and great at best movies that don't just shit the bed.

Thor's "he's adopted" line sticks out. It's sort of out of place, considering how big a part Loki being Thor's brother, no qualifiers, is to Thor's character in both his films.

Black Widow's "I don't see how that's a party" also comes to mind, but it my just be the ways Scarlett Johansson voiced it. It sounded incredibly off.

It's honestly been awhile since I saw it, so that's all I can remember. And it's really not the worst Whedon thing when it comes to this, I know that. Maybe /co/'s just rubbed off on me. I liked the banter, but I still kind of recalled it being a bit much.

Captain America's "I understood that reference" is actually a nice, in character joke, showing off how dopey of a guy he still is in the modern world.

I'm fine with the Whedoning of the characters in the Avengers movies. Even looking at it from the comic book perspective, big team-up stories always have the complexities of the individual characters shaved off to serve the taste of the writers style.
