So yeah, /co/ pretty much sucks tonight
Seems like everyone is enjoying more anime/tumblr discussions than talking about some comics and cartoons. Who would know?

This one is actually an old strip that did not make it into the earlier books, and the artist re-drew it in his current style.

Actually back in the day we had Melusine megathreads and everything.
I requested this in one of them for instance, and a friendly drawfag obliged.
>>69101836
>No copyright was harmed during this strip
In book 19 they meet the witch from hansel & Gretel (I think - whichever is the one with the candy house), the three little piggies, that donkey who sheds gold (don't know his name), Hop-o'-My-Thumb and his brothers, little red riding hood (she wears a wolf skin coat), Rapunzel, Cinderella, Belle and the Beast, Snow White and the seven dwarves, the rabbit with the clock from Alice in Wonderland, a fairy godmother, they toss the genies lamp in a well, and they top it all off by accidentally killing Queen Grimhilde.
>>69103574
You're oversimplifying it. The French and the Japanese know how to infuse their characters with natural eroticism and femininity. The latter being the key. There is a warm acceptance about it which is utterly absent from US comics. In US comics the "sexy" woman dresses like a whore, is aggressive and yet is antagonistic to men or simply rude. Her sexuality is like that of a cockless man who can't get off.
Actual French women seem kind and nice too, from my limited experience. They aren't afraid of giving you a genuine smile.
>>69102458
>Is Melusine the only good looking witch on the castle?
There is also Krapella, who was translated as Gothica in the latest English release.
>>69103676
Well, lots of those characters are public domain. However the Disney design they gave to them is the one copyrighted, that's why Disney always change their stories a lot, so they can make the copyright a lot more solid
But is fun to see Melusine got away with this one, like that book from Moebius where in the middle of desert there's a exact replica of the famous Dumbo model from the ride of Disney, and they guy use it as a spaceship half of the book, with chases and everything
>>69102917
>Melusine was REALLY being a cunt all that time
The thing is - she is a witch. And not the nice anime witch, but the classical European mess-with-me-and-I-turn-you-into-a-frog kind of witch. So it is in-character for her.
>>69103912
They do use the Disney designs in the book, except for Belle I think.
>>69103513

>>69102885
>/co/ doesn't really dig this comic for some reason.
I've storytimed all the English releases a few times, and it seems to me that few people care about it, but the ones who do like it.
>I translated the first three French volumes and just needed someone to add the text to the word balloons (and if possible, find better scans) but never got a bite.
That's news to me, as far as I know only a few odds and ends were translated, and a lot of them were poorly done. I had a translation for a couple of pages from book 2, but Cinebook ended up releasing that (and their translation almost matched word to word what I got).
Anyway, the biggest problem with translating is that most of the scans are shit. However they are digitalized in good quality, so once I get a stable job, I'll slowly start buying all the issues.
>>69102973
>but only did 3 or 4, and out of order.
Even the artist of the book doesn't know why Cinebook does that btw.
My guess is that they either wanted to prioritize topical releases so they sell better (release the book titled Halloween on Halloween, or the one called Hocus Pocus around the latest harry potter, etc), or they are skipping some books due to nipple slips. They actually re-draw panels in Largo Winch to cover up nudity, despite that series being released in a higher age category - and it is not uncommon for Melusine books to have nudity.
>>69102885
Well I'm pretty sure I fucking loved it.

Funny story, this is actually the second version of this strip, due to a retcon. The original version was one of the first few strips published and back then the idea was that the castle was near a modern city in contemporary times, and so she went to a night club. But pretty soon they settled on a fairytale land setting instead and so that strip never was published in book form in its original version.
Recently the author drew a modern variation of it again, with the idea that the modern world is an alternate dimension. I like that third version but I'd really want to see the original strip again
Where can I download this and the rest of the translated books to save it for reading later?
I didn't find it in the scanlator folders.

Learn to speak snail, son.
Here's a blog post featuring a story (in french) by the original writer of the comic detailing Melusine's first meeting with her cousin and including some backstory: http://scenaristegilson.blogspot.ch/2009/12/la-genese-de-melusine.html
So, her parents have vanished, are presumed dead, and her cousin's parents died after being ostracized. Didn't expect that. Since this never was in the comic the canonicity of it may be wobbly.
>>69116359
Holy shit. Apparently the witches here are ancient. This story says that Melusine was 113 before she even first met her cousin.
>>69117034
I think it does a +100 thing so Melusine is 119 and has the appearance and mentality of a teenager.
Did the ever translate the one where she gets laid? I must know. This is very important
>>69117086
Not really, later we learn that her Aunt is well over 500 years old.
>>69117135
Not as far as I know.
>>69117353
>>69117135
Does anybody have it in french?
>>69117034
>>69117086
yeah, in the very first strip Melusine is introduced as being 119 years old and it's rather obviously meant to be 19
>>69117450
Wait, so is this not the first comic: >>69100415?
>>69117397
I don't, neither do I know where it could be found.
>>69117450
>yeah, in the very first strip Melusine is introduced as being 119 years old and it's rather obviously meant to be 19
17. You have to divide the years by 7. Her niece Malicella is 112 for 16.
>>69117579
No; "Hocus Pocus" is actually volume 7. Cinebook decided not to publish the series in order for whatever reason. It's true the art wasn't as good in the beginning so maybe that's why.
I'll just post the first page of the first volume, Sortileges.
>>69117397
I have the hardcover.
>>69117579
Indeed, in the original french Hocus Pocus is the seventh book. The actual first comic takes place back when she applies to be an au pair for the count.
Seems the english publisher decided to start at a point where the art had already progressed quite a bit and the cast had started focusing on the magic school rather than the castle.
>>69117863
Malicella acts like a twelve years old so the +100 approach seems a lot more plausible.
>>69117885
Oh wow.
So that's from around 20 years ago?
>>69117995
It wouldn't work with the fact that her aunt is 400+ years old (70-something).
>>69118019
first book in february 95, so it's her 20th anniversary like right now. Actual prepublication started in spirou magazine the year before, but I can't remember the exact date. But from the first moment she was waifu material.
>>69118235
one of the things mentioned in that Melusine genesis link from earlier is that she's pretty sure her aunt's lying about her age.
>>69117952
They are just releasing things in random order. It helps that the earlier books don't really have any sort of reading order beyond "character x is introduced". But the later ones get more storylines that go through the entire book, and since the original writer left, the books now have a continuous plot with sometimes major changes (like killing off a character).
Continuing. This is book 3, Vampire's Ball, which was originally the 2nd book released.
Hocus Pocus was book 7 and Halloween was book 8.
>>69118413
Since this was originally the 2nd boo, you'll notice that the art is a bit different, and some characters may be absent or have smaller roles.
>>69118441
>>69118450
>>69118484

Everyone looks smaller and less proportioned in the early books.
I didn't really like how she looked in the middle books, she looked much older than she was.
In the recent books, she looks younger, but much sexier.
It's all just art evolution though - they did not progress with the real years at all, despite even celebrating her birthday at one point.
>>69118816
>>69118360
>one of the things mentioned in that Melusine genesis link from earlier is that she's pretty sure her aunt's lying about her age.
Yeah but she says she is 500+ in that one, while elsewhere in the comics they said 400+. And also Cancrelune is meant to be 113 but she definitely looks older than that, so the /7 rule fits the best.
