The Japanese animations are not faithful to Tove's comics. I think the upcoming Moomin on the Riviera is probably the most faithful one, at least what the trailer will have you believe. I don't think even the story is very faithful to the Moomin-books. The books most have a more serious underlying theme to them while the Japanese just concentrate for the child-audience. Not saying they're bad, but I think us who've experienced moomin primarily through the Japanese animated series need to be more open for other adaptions too.

Lars Jansson is not just "the original creator's brother". He worked on the newspaper strip at first alongside his sister and later entirely by himself.
Both Tove and Lars Jansson were involved with the 1990 adaptation and their names are above the title in the Finnish opening credits, though no specific role is attributed to either. The Japanese opening credits list them as original creators. Tove at least had the right to demand changes during production, so while the episodes are not 100 percent replicas of the original novels or the newspaper strip, any changes that survived were things she considered to be okay.

I talked about the books as well, which why the picture. But what I was trying to say was that moomins have many sides; the books are different, the comics are different and the animations are different. I don't think there is one ultimate and original moomin that all adaptions have to try to achieve (nor am I saying that you would think so).
Personally I like the long japanese animation of the comet story while the jungle- and time-travel stories were pretty weak. Were the time-travel, jungle and Mars stories taken from the comics or made for the animation?

Okay so...
The Finnish localization found the Groke to look way too scary for their children to see.
They just couldn't take it.
So, to solve this issue the Finnish version did the logical thing, "Let's not show the kids the Groke as much, that way the kids won't be as scared and they can watch the show".
In practice the chosen method was to pump up the saturation and dark colors so the shadows and such would block out Groke from the footage.
