It's never made clear. At some point in time, the robots took over a significant portion of the world, with humans driven to "the desert". It seems to be set up like the Mega-Cities in Judge Dredd: robot cities surrounded by inhospitable (to robots) wastelands.
Along the way, the robots seem to have forgotten how they came to power and why humanity fights them. They also came up with some bizarre prophecy about the emergence of a non-hostile, friendly type of human they called "Charming Mankind", which, of course, turns out to be bullshit.
At the end of Fireball, the humans finally win

Outside a few lines, humans aren't given much attention so it's all guesswork
They live outside the city in a desert and have technology advanced enough to not only fight the robots but eventually win. The military ability of the robots is never brought up so it's hard to compare but, since it took 144+ years to invade and capture Tempest Tower, I would guess they're less advanced than the robots and winning through sheer perseverance and numbers.

Humans and other organic lifeforms naturally have imperfect balance, while also being built to traverse extremely-uneven and unstable natural terrain. Having flat-ish feet and articulated toes is exceptionally-good when walking and running on ground that's soft, unstable, and uneven. These feet also give us more surface area to balance our weight on, which makes not falling over notably-easier.
Robots, on the other hand, can have perfect balance from a mix of gyroscopic technology and computer compensation, while also tending to traverse flat, stable and artificial terrain. Extremely precise and low-surface-area points in place of feet are good for flat artificial terrain, since they're able to balance on much smaller points of contact and don't have air drag, which facilitates faster and more agile leg movement.
Just like plodding human feet aren't exactly super-fast or perfectly-stable on flat surfaces where they can't grip anything, pointed robo-legs would be complete and utter shit on mud, sand and other unstable terrain, since they'd just sink in and get stuck if it's deep enough.
