Some animation studios have tons of problems keeping characters on model (mostly female characters). They will (some times on purpose, sometimes by accident) draw her with different proportions than normal.
Note that in certain cases, this is allowed (I remember a few anime had this. Some male characters were slightly more muscular, while the some of the girls had more noticeable proportions, and in one case, cleavage).
One of the weirdest one's I saw was a character that was flat normally, with DD breasts for a few important scenes in one episode.

1. Season 2 cost over 1 million dollars per episode. In fact, Season 2 was literally half of Hanna-Barbera's total budget in 1994. The quality shows, but the series was too high-maintenance to keep going.
2. The merchandizing tie-ins failed miserably by a toy company that had no clue WTF they were doing.
There was a plan to produce a Swat Kats movie, financed by Dodi Fayed, but he had that little boo-boo with Princess Di in 1997 and that was that.

In the same vein, what about Green Skinned Alien Babes?
People went NUTS over green skinned alien babes in things like Mass Effect. Pretty much everywhere they show up, really. Zero shits are given about them, and they're pretty much expected in most science fiction media now. Some of them are pretty damned bizzare waifu material and don't get WTF responses proportional to just how WTF it is. Frankly, I think my favorite parody of this is the little romance in Galaxy Quest with the squid alien.
Yet something like Callie from Swat Cats is somehow impossibly perverted because it's just associated with furry. It's just a cat ears + tail human with a mutant nose... and the low-key nose is essentially just an anime nose. Even the furrier furries are still less perverted by most logic, but considered even more taboo.
OP I think it's just the majority-mob's fault of having a very short focus and memory. Furries took a mantle in the limited space of the public's mind before other shit could take it. Go check out BioWare forums some time, and that's just the tip of only one popular iceberg.
