Just got back from watching zootopia, truly beautiful animation and lighting.

Is this the current high water mark for 3d animated movies?

I can't think of anything I've seen that had more fluid and beautiful flowing animation in a 3d movie.
>>
How to Train Your Dragon is very impressive with its 3D as well
>>
>>80881874
Apparently, disney spent 8 months developing advanced fur technology, so theres that.
>>
>>80881874
I like to think that the fur rendering tech they developed is certainly something other companies should take advantage of. Beyond that, yeah, they really did push a ton of good design ideas. Most of them could be applied to 2D animation: Color palate, general shapes, fucking insane detail, etc. But what really gets me is all the little changes in expression. Just look at the way their eyes will dart around during conversations, or what some random guy is doing in the background. Its such a little thing that adds so much life to everything and is perfect for CG.

The water below the hospital was really good. As well as in the rainforest. All of the environments were really detailed. I also recently saw the movie a 3rd time. So I was just paying more attention to the landscapes.
And everytime the sad judy scene under the bridge makes me feel.

I wonder if future media will delve more into Nick's past. We already know he didn't rely exclusively on his pawpsicle scheme because of the skunk rug bit. What's likely the best and worst stuff he's done in his life? Does he have any huge regrets or happy memories outside of his youth? Is there anything he fears Judy finding out about?

WHAT
>>
>>80881874
Ditto.
The highs
>Characterization
>Fun Noir style detective plot if predictable twists
>Nick was a rogue instead of a veteran Cop, which would've lead to the usual cliche "Old guard vs new rookie" Buddy-Cop dynamics but made it more interesting instead
>Lots of call backs and fun workings with its short cast in a short amount of time
>Bunny Waifu
The Lows
>Judy finding out the secret to the Savage'ing by coincidentally being introduced to/remembering the plant was a lil far fetched
>Ending seemed rushed, Bellwether was arrested and done with 5 minutes after her reveal, wanted to see more of her and plan, what was her endgame, ect
>That's more of an effect of the movie only being 90 min long
>Kid's in the theater weren't laughing. I don't know if that's good or bad, but I think they made the tone a lil too adult, not much slapstick, ect

But overall really enjoyable to see would marathon again/10.

They said we need to talk to their boss, which means it's not planned yet. It's standard, but disappointing because there was the slim treatment that it'd get the Lilo and Stitch treatment and have more content ready to roll out after the movie drops.
>>
>>80882406
i feel like the last quarter of the movie suffered the most from the rewrites, but hey what can you do. At least the ending is good in that it opens up a world of possibilities for the characters.
>>
>>80882446
I'd rather have less content that's all great than a bunch of stuff that's boring to watch
>>
>>80882012
This is so good, that something about it reaches a weird level of uncanny valley effect. It's like if they didn't get it EXACTLY right or render anything just a tiny touch off, it would've come out creepy and not good. But it is good, it's just barely good enough that the sorta reflexive effect is avoided.

I wonder if the fact that I was born and grew up at the cusp of internet technology and CGI usage is the reason why "didn't age well" just isn't something I notice at all or doesn't bother me if I ever do.

>think they made the tone a lil too adult

Thank fuck they did.
Not everything has to be a standard disney kiddy laughfest.
For example had there been some kinda annoying sidekick saying cringeqorthy and predictable one liners, the movie would have been a lot lower in quality.

>...
>why was he even targeted
>what did he know
>what was he going to do

>>
>>80882446
But the Lilo and Stitch stuff was poorly made and clearly rushed out the door. Probably the only moderately good thing that came out of it was the actual sequel.

He's a florist. He likely knew of the nighthowlers seeing as how it's his profession. A polar bear was missing, likely one of Mr. Bigs or related to him in some way, being the Tundra Town mob boss.
Otterton is his florist, he was on his way to inform him when he was shot.

>>Judy finding out the secret to the Savage'ing by coincidentally being introduced to/remembering the plant was a lil far fetched
All you need to do to suspend your disbelief is to consider the fact that common names vary from place to place, family to family. Judy's family (and maybe rabbits in general) traditionally referred to them as something different than others. Maybe her parents knew that the gutter trash call them something different, but never felt the need to tell their kids.

My guess is:
He was a florist, so he knew about the side-effects of the Nighthowlers and what they were in general.
Knowing about that would have made him a liability if he were to inform the higher ups, and considering Duke was probably stealing Nighthowler bulbs all around town, he might have suspected something, especially when cases of predators suddenly going savage started turning up.

Well, Frozen seems to fit that bill as well.

I would have liked an ending where Judy jumps in front of Nick the night howler pellet and he has to deal with her going crazy. Instead of just a shit confession on a pen they'd have actual proof that things werent predator specific
>>

>>

In the original script, Nick (and later Judy) were supposed to be Framed for some sort of crime and I imagine it'd be more "Who Framed Rodger Rabit"-esque with Bell's plan enacting the same way as the toon from that movie. You can sorta see the rewrites and pacing problems at the end of Zootopia however since the 3rd act is the shortest in the movie.

>>
>>80882518
I appreciate that, it was amazing the way it was. I'm just noting that none of the kids seemed to laugh because all the cop stuff and racial war plot seemed to fly right over their heads. Most of them looked confused or bored.

I was content to leave it as "he's a florist," but after a while it sunk it that he's not just any florist, he's Mr. Big's florist. And that not even the ZPD knew the missing animals went feral. Mr. Otterton, as far as we know, didn't witness anyone going feral so it can be assumed that he somehow obtained information regarding Doug. Doug didn't get his nighthowlers from Weaselton, who Doug hired to snag some after Otterton went missing. Why was he suddenly down a supplier?
It was Mr. Otterton.

Meh, I don't mind that whole "Sudden insight/Epiphany" cliche being done, it's quite common to detective movies especially right after the cop is fired or layed off (Or quit in this case) and at their lowest.
I just wish it'd be set up and hinted at a little more throughout the movie, like periodic mentions or tiny clues that all come together true to fashion. That way it'd require multiple flashbacks and not just one so she wouldn't grasp it way too quick.

In a sense yeah, but they are introduced earlier in the movie. And the first victim being a florist should have been a huge giveaway clue. They should've been treated as a more integral element to the movie that they'd investigate along the way.

And they are kind of like Magic Heroine, you know? It'd really justify racial bias IRL if we had a drug that made minorities go insane. As is only Coke can do that, and that's a white people drug.

I just saw it for the 4th time and you pretty much summed it up nicely.

Interestingly I have noticed an up-tick in the number of people seeing it. After the first week or two the crowds die off quite a bit. I usually grab the last show on sundays or mid-week and more often than not i'm the only person in the theatre. But the last two times there have been small "crowds" of about 20 or so. I'm curious to see if this trend continues.

No, because the movie isn't a direct allegory to racial/class struggle, just commentary on how different people try to incite it. We could have gotten any other plot trying to stir up and frame Predators, the Howlers were just device we got to serve that.

What seemed more arbitrary than the Howlers themselves was how suddenly Judy discovered them and suddenly knew they were the cause of everything all along, that seemed to really "Move the plot along" and bridge the last 2 acts in an abrupt and odd way. But as far as transitions go it's not the worst plot device ever.

It's not as bad as say, "Elsa discovers she can control her powers and heal Anna all with the power of LOVE" sorta dumb plot-device.

It's not normal to have a florist. It's even more abnormal to have a florist that is like one of the family. On top of that, I don't expect a crime lord to be completely honest with a cop. It's also strange to go tell "something important" to the head of a mafia family instead of the police.

It is when your daughter is getting married. Actually, I'd suspect a mob boss would have a lot of events to coordinate that require a florist. You're right, but it's still weird for someone dangerous to let someone into his inner circle like that. Rather, it's weird for someone like Otterton to WANT to be in his inner circle. He didn't have to take the job, but he did and he did it in such a way that he had pull with the family. Emmett didn't just drive to Tundra Town, he was picked up by one of Mr. Big's drivers.

Actually, Mrs. Otterton could have suspected the mafia, but she doesn't know a thing about him really. It's tragic that they're the cutest couple that's ever been.

I'd like to see some expansion into Nick's past too. I think the only up parts are that, for Nick being a habitual liar, we at least can be fairly sure the scout thing happened and the skunk butt rug (which has an outside source to confirm)

I honestly can't even begin to seriously guess anything.

For a joke i'd say Nick's biggest shame and the thing he hopes Judy never learns is with no other real emotional outlets in life, Nick briefly tried a hand at story writing under a pseudonym. His works ranged from a pulpy novel series about a rabbit Spy, a dark, dystopian sci-fi work which was his personal feelings on Zootopia and his belief on where it was headed, and the odd children's story and a collection of poetry.

>>

I write a little, and Nick's past seems best left sketchy. Not a lot of huge successes or losses; he's hustling with $2 popsicles. He burned bridges with the likes of Mr. Big doing similar hustles and wound up right back at square 1.

Other than running away from home, there's maybe not that much to tell. He probably barely has a GED.

You know, it bugged me that some guy taking in "$200" a day could only pay Finnick $40 a day. Then it hit me - he isn't. He's making maybe $100 and gives Finnick the $40. Finnick only trucks with Nick because he's one of the few employers to not ask many questions about a particular fixed address.

He doesn't because Nick's nearly homeless too.
>>
>>80883701
They reference years when Nick gets hustled by Judy. "Since you were 12, so 20 years".

It's linked to their life story, too. Judy's parents reference what happened to Gideon "when you were kids." She mentions it happened when she was 9.

They seem to have roughly human lifespans.
>>
>you will never learn to put aside your differences with nick

>>
>>80883703
Nick doesn't seem like the kind of guy to run a risk like selling a shitty rug to Mr. Big just for a half-decent payout. I'm wondering if maybe he got in trouble somehow and needed a big payout fast.

I wonder if Nick ever thinks, late at night, about how much he regrets burning that bridge, because Mr. Big always treated him really fairly. Maybe he was too proud to just ask for help?

It depends on what you want in a villain.

If you want your villain to be detestable, it's a very different thing than wanting your villain to be sympathetic.

If you wanted Bellwether to be more detestable then you need her actions to be more violent.

For example, let's say the original script went through and Nick actually does get HOWLERE'D but his protective instincts make him defend Judy. The proper way to make people detest Bellwether is to have her do something violent to Feral Nick while ranting about how he's just a dumb vicious predator. This provides a parallel that Bellwether is an even more savage person than someone reduced to a wild animal, also exposing her hypocrisy. The best way to make people hate a fucker is to make them do horrible things while being hypocrites like the fucking fucker in my picture

If you want Bellwether to be sympathetic, then she needs her own tragic little flashback or exposition and you must then demonstrate that she's only eliminating Judy because she feels it's necessary.
>>
>>80883677
She wasn't a good villain because she didn't have a real point to her rhetoric. She was wrong. There was nothing outside of the Intro that indicated Predators were prone to revert or prey were inherently superior, thus the narrative gave no reason to sympathize with her or question if there was anything more to her motives akin to a villain like Ozymandias, Amon or Syndrome. She was completely and reprehensibly wrong.

By comparison the Lion had more interesting actions as a villain with complex, yet less interesting motives overall. We should've seen more debate over whether locking others up to save face held any weight for the morale of Zootopia.

I can understand not having leather in this world, because you have to skin an animal to get it, but wool is trimmed from sheep and other animals in a painless process. This is only a problem with Domesticated sheep, no other "Natural" relative has the same problem. These sheep are literally bred for Wool and have been for thousands of years so they've become incapable of not having those problems, it's bred into them.

It's not unthinkable that Sheep evolved this way with other domesticated mammals somehow in the Zootopia world, but it just has a lot of weird implications.

I was in actual genuine surprise when she said that. I know it can be taken as a friendly thing, but at that moment I was like "What the fuck did she literally admit she loves him?" I was so happy

Thinking back it could just be small shit and not serious at all, but it's also a bit flirty, idk man

Am I the only person wondering how the fuck Judy managed to get ahold of Nick's tax records? She wasn't in the police computer system and she couldn't even run a license plate number without bringing it to the DMV, yet somehow she managed to acquire damning personal information on Nick which she then used to blackmail him into cooperating with her. I loved the movie, but this is a GLARING plot hole.

Any new announcement, cute art, merch?

Just ordered the art book. I'll probably get it after a month, if I'm lucky.
