Ive nearly caught up to Homestuck as a new reader and i feel that Act 6 isnt as bad to me since ive had to catch up and not wait. But im sure the long hiatuses gave fans ample time to pick apart and critque it. To me i got into Homestuck for the characters and you cant deny that Hussie writes their dialogue so distinctly that it makes them feel different from each other. Homestuck thread.

This is accurate, the pauses have been hell. Another reason there's disdain for act 6 (and act 5 mind you) is the shift from a focus on sburb, to characters. sure, reading it for the first time is cool, but after a year or two of discussion you start to realize that the forgoing of explanations on sburb as a medium really grates.
The whole LE story is nice, but I think everybody would have preferred a straightforward session that could have been completed in less than 7 years if they thought about it.

What killed Homestuck was the insistence on having every new character tie into the narrative. The Midnight Crew intermission was great because it did it's own thing and eventually tied in, but wasn't a necessary read (it is easily one of the best parts of HS though and it is totally necessary for you to enjoy yourself.)

I'm one of a handful of oldfags that liked Act 6 just as fine overall as the earlier half of the comic. A couple of the complaint towards the act, like lesser focus on Sburb mechanics and seeming lack of tension, I don't think it's really true so much as it's just been a really slow build-up towards the final pages, where major shit's going to go down.

What I consider to be more frustrating is that we didn't see any new classpects pop up with the dancestors/alpha kids. Just to fucking throw a wrench in this idea that there are 12 of each (+Lord/Muse), which so many people seem so comfortable with. I am rereading the comic for the first time, and I am now in early act 4, and I have to say, I am starting to realize why tumblr abandoned this comic. Everyone keeps calling each other retarded and gay unironically, and there is an oddly large number of jokes about ethnic weddings.
Another thing I notice is that while many people point out that Act 6 shifted the focus of the comic from Sburb to characters, there is another major shift. Act 1 up to the Intermission focus on Sburb as a game, and Acts 4 and 5 focus on Sburb as a world.

Hussie's priorities have obviously changed since he began HS. What started as a wacky video game inspired comedy is has been a YA epic with a lot of character drama for the majority of it's run.
This meant characters originally meant not to have deep character arcs had them thrust upon them. I reckon if he had preplanned the story of HS to be a story like what it is now, the character's arcs would be a whole lot more coherent.
The 'make it up as you go along' method of writing created more problems. The pre-scratch characters kind of became stagnant after Act 5, so Hussie had to put in a bunch of extra shit to create conflict. Therefore: Terezi, Gamzee, Dave and Karkat drama, and Rose becoming an alcoholic.
Another thing pre-planning would have helped with is the comic's themes. At the moment it seems to be heading towards some kind of epiphany on what the 'self' is. Whether alternate versions of each character truly are them, and if you should be responsible for the actions of the other versions, or if they are different people entirely because they have had different experiences, or most likely a combination of the two. Davepeta and Jasprose, are part of this, (Vriska) also links in and whatever Terezi actually did in remember is also probably relevant. Different characters provide different opinions on this, and I don't think it's just Hussie being inconsistent with his views. This is a main par of A6A6I5, which I don't think is essentially terrible, it's just really poorly executed and the art takes a big downfall. What is said in 500 pages could have been said in 200 or less. Less Vriska fellating would have been nice too.
But before Act 6 the main theme was more about fate and inevitability, and how time travel would affect that. 'He is already here' and all that. I think these can be unified into a satisfying conclusion, but whether they will is up to Hussie.

Hussie considers isolation to be a big one, but personally I can't really see it. Mostly beacuse he fucked it up by not giving enough importance to when the main characters finally meet.
The alpha kids(as well as a lot of early Act 6) have 'waiting' as theme, which was a terrible idea since it just sets the story up for long stretches of dullness. Myststuck gave off the best feeling of this, but it wasn't really touched on again.
