So, I don't see being "trans" as really a real thing, but I don't care because trans people can do what they want, so it doesn't matter to me if they see gender as such a real thing that they deeply feel that they are the "wrong" one.
Plus, there's the Thomas theorum. "Things that people believe are real are real in their consequences." Because we treat gender as real, it affects us as real, so it's real enough for a trans person to feel they need to switch genders, I guess.

Gender is a sociological term that refers to male/female as defined by society, hence social construct. Sex is a biological term that refers to penis/vagina and the associated chromosomes therein. Obviously, since society defines males as having penises and women as having vaginas, that means that the two are, in practice, no different. But that doesn't make them synonyms.

Transsexual and transgender are two different things. A woman born with a dick or that goes through sex change surgery is a transsexual. Someone whose transgender would be someone who identifies as the gender opposite of what society would dictate they are.
To be a transsexual, you have to have some kinda sexual difference, be it through sex change or just being born with a fucked up biology. Someone whose transgender would be more like someone whose biologically a woman but dressed up as a guy and tells people they're a guy. The gender they identify with is different than the gender that would normally be identified with them. Gender being a matter of identity while sex is a matter of biology.

Excellent way to put it and I agree. Its why, even as an atheist, I don't dislike religion if it affects people in positive ways and leads them to do positive things. Yes, most streams of feminism (not all) agree with the social scientific research that illuminates the difference between sex and gender. I don't see how that invalidates being transgendered.
Like already discussed, we treat gender as so real that it's consequences are real. As a result, if people feel that they are the incorrect sex or gender, just telling them "gender's a construct anyway" isn't much help to them. They live in a society where it's real, so if they feel that they would be more comfortable being the other gender, I don't see why that isn't a logical option for them, given the society that they live in.
