What are some times series made fun of their fanbase?

I know PPG had Utonium and Keane hook up in one episode because they are such a popular pairing. The episode did nothing to shippers.. And the teenage scene was supposed to make fun of fanfic writers writing the girls badly as teens, yet everyone took the interpretations seriously

Before continuing is there any statement on record that that was the intent?
Because there is simply too much groundless speculation that something in a cartoon is a comment on something from the internet.
>>
>>
>>63839082
well, you won't hear from them "yeah these fucktards are too fun to read over DA, but we are tired of their pedo shit so we just made a teenager episode for them to wank to more mature girls"
>>
>>63839082

I don't have an official source to link you to but I've heard that repeated several times. Fanfic writers always girled them up and made them basically just sit around drooling over the Rowdyruff Boys and having generic high school adventures... And they still do that, well over 10 years later.
>>
I remember an episode of Samurai Jack where Aku was telling stories of the EVIL SAMURAI and the kids ended up doing their own story at the end that encompassed pretty much every trope in the series. Maybe less poking fun at their audience and more self-aware humor in that instance.
>>
>>63839149
It's kind of dumb to start a thread about in-show comments on fan behavior with such a dubious example when there are so many verified cases.
>>
I *think* the creepy collector basement dweller from PPG was a reference to something. I was a little girl at the time so I don't know how popular PPG was with older people.

TLOK had that hikki airbender guy
>>

Watching the episode it makes sense. That segment reads like a god awful fanfic.

Are you saying you've heard that the teenager scene in the cartoon was meant to satirize those fanfics, or that there are a lot of fanfics like that scene?

Flame Princess deserves a gold medal for her exemplary judgment and courage. Not only for leaving her abusive boyfriend, but also for having a pure heart, a heart overflowing with forgiveness; we should commend her having the fortitude and wisdom to look past Finn's masculine weakness, to cherish the new friendship born from the ashes of his disappointing treachery. It takes strength to forgive.

Ben 10 Alien Force did it twice.

The first time was when Ben and Kevin were watching the sequel to their favorite action cartoon, Sumo Slammers, called Sumo Slammers: Hero Generation. Kevin said it wasn't as good as the original, and Ben commented on how it was set up in the same manner as Alien Force (taking place 5 years in the future, with the bad guy joining the good guy's team) and how he preferred the original as well.

Then there was the episode where Mr.Smoothys was doing a Ben 10 promotion using his aliens as flavors, one of the fans said the Alien X Mystery flavor tasted like filler. Because Alien X was a fucking joke.

The internet is something of a double-edged sword when it comes to cartoons' relationship to their fans.
On the one hand, I'm sure a lot of animators and writers etc probably appreciate it when fans reach out to them on twitter or whatever and show their appreciation, its like having a 24/7 convention appearance. I believe it was Motorcity's creators that tried to stave off cancellation by presenting binders full of fanart to the higher powers.

On the other hand, being explicitly aware of audience expectations and demands from certain loud minorities is probably not all that good either. I think Adventure Time and Horse Show probably illustrate that; sometimes there's that back-of-the-mind feeling with AT that certain moments are being portrayed in response to some specific fan feedback, whether it be shipping or adventuring or whatever. Does that compromise the show?
>>
>>63855882

I think it does. You see this in live-action TV shows all the time, too. There's a fine line between grateful fan acknowledgement and having fun with them and blatantly pandering to them, the latter which can then stimulate the creation of a third category which is obvious contempt for the fans (see: Homestuck, Invader Zim).

So yeah. When it's done well, it's done really really well, but when it's done bad, it's horrid.
>>
>>63855882

On the topic of AT, I feel like the Fiona and Cake episodes are perfect one offs that would be fucking god awful and annoying to watch if it were an actual series, but for some reason it has a fuck huge fanbase.

Oh, a tranny? Well whatever, I don't care about that, I care that she takes sperging over fandoms like she owns them to amazing heights and people actually pay attention because she's talented. What a shitty combination.

>...At best, the attempted message was “You can’t try to force relationships to work.” But because this was about toy avatars and not “real” people, and more importantly, because of the context, it’s hard to buy that interpretation.
This fandom is unique in that it has a lot of communication between creators and fans. And in the past, the creators have expressed disapproval and outright disdain for fans of certain ships, particularly Marceline/Bubblegum. They made an episode strongly hinting at the relationship, only to never touch the subject or even let the characters interact again. There’s a sense that the creators have a lot of disdain for “shippers” and blame them for the fallout of the “Mathematical!” video recap fiasco which led to the video recap series being cancelled and someone being fired.
Given that context, it’s not a huge stretch of the imagination that they’d make an episode basically ridiculing shippers and calling them pathetic losers who ruin everything. And even if that was not their main intent, many people besides me have felt really put-off by the episode, and the creators are in-touch enough to know it would be interpreted this way. There also are plenty of people commenting on it to laugh and mock shippers, assuming that was the message.
At best, this was a really clumsy moral with mixed messages. At worst, it was directly aimed at mocking shippers. Either way, I don’t think it was a good choice.

How the heck did you get ”sugarless gum is ok but I don’t wanna see lemongrab having sex with pb" out of this? Where did you see any hint that the relationships Finn was interested in exploring were "acceptable" by the narrative’s standards? The final message is that shipping is (in Jake’s words) "degenerate" and pathetic. Not just some of the relationships, all of them. (And PB and Marceline, as if just to spite the biggest fanship f the show, don’t interact at all.)
And how is it a good message to tell people they can’t ship what they want? That they need a “reason?” You don’t need a reason to ship stuff. Shipping can be for fun, for a personal kink, or for validation of a marginalized identity. And it’s nobody’s place, not even the creators, to try to insult or demean you for it. How you choose to interact with other fans with similar interests or enjoy a show is YOUR BUSINESS.
Not everyone has the luxury of having their identity portrayed in the mainstream. For some people, having their sexuality or identity validated by a cartoon is a HUGE DEAL. Fans should be allowed to enjoy whatever headcanons they want, not shamed for it.

>he derives sexual pleasure from seeing her unhappy
Not even defending Finn, but that's really only one interpretation. He's obsessed with adventuring, so maybe he gets off seeing how badass she is when fighting. That's not so much anything to do with her being unhappy.

It's actually "Maynard", but whoever at E! wrote the captions decided to call him a nerd anyway.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jay_Maynard

>In 2010, Maynard was banned from seeing the film Tron: Legacy in his iconic Tron suit in his local movie theater because of the illuminating lights on his suit.

>On June 8, 2011, Maynard appeared on America's Got Talent. He received a "no" vote from each of the three judges and did not make it past the audition round. Howie Mandel had him restart his introductory speech over several times, so it was left unclear what his act was going to be.

That would be Finn's perspective, yes. But he still manipulated her emotions for his own gratification (abuse). It doesn't matter what he intended; that's what happened.

Finn also seems to show genuine remorse afterward, and it's obviously not a mistake he'll ever make again, but I can understand FP not being totally comfortable around him after that.

If someone is writing fanfiction for "validation of a marginalized identity", then this validation only exists in the fanfiction, not in the show itself. It IS masturbation, just as this episode depicted it.

Decent question to ask why someone should tell others not to masturbate, but then again, most people don't do it in a public place and expect people to be interested.

Was that episode written by Dobson? Instead of accepting critism and acknowledging our mistakes, let's make fun of the people pointing them out instead.

In this case, the depiction was accurate. It's based on the guy who stalked Tress MacNielle.

>The "World's Biggest Tiny Toon Fan" in the sketch, Night of the Living Dull, is based on Dennis Falk, an actual overly-obsessed fan the production team encountered while working on Tiny Toon Adventures. He was a stalker who sent Tress MacNeille disturbing letters which caused her to fear for life and cancel any convention appearances she was planning to make around where he lives.

Well, you could Google "alt.tv.animaniacs" which would link you to Google Groups' archive of them, though with 20-year-old posts, the records tend to be incomplete. Not everything's there and sometimes things were pointed out via IRC or email. A compiled collection of what was deemed important enough to record was the Cultural References Guide for Animaniacs, which got regular updates as the series was airing.

http://www.keeper1st.com/toons/crga2.txt

And I have no idea why they merely mention "the 'Iris Out On The Nose' bit's been done" without mentioning that it was done right before the second commercial break in King Yakko, episode 10.

Anon, the video specifically warned that you needed help before you rewound the skit to see what was in this scene. You didn't listen.

It didn't say that until well after the scene occurred, and it only mentioned rewinding, not pausing.
