Why was the latest episode of Adventure Time so stupid?

Why are they trying to turn it from a fun show about a kid on adventure with his dog into a shitty ~deep~ artsy crap show?
>>
>>63710257

Because the staff is nothing but hipsters.
>>
The message was pretty easy to get, you can't force people to change no matter how much you love them. Even the last episode was more abstract than this episode due to the trials shelby's brother faced about greed. If anything this is one of the most down to earth episodes of this season due to the lack of surrealism and large use of character dialog.
>>
>>63710376
Literally who gives a fuck about the message? It's not a confusing or insightful message.
>>
>>63710448
i watch adventure time for the messages, i live my life by the directions of cartoons

>>
>>63710488

>>
>>63710448
I'd say its a pretty insightful message because its not uncommon for people to try to "fix" people who will never change.
>>
>>63710550
Loved hearing tina and louise side by side in tjis.

I liked this episode, and I haven't really liked many this season. I guess I can relate to the idea of people doing hurtful things because they love you.
>>
>>63710550
It didn't sound like Viola was voiced by the dude who does Linda and that was vaguely disappointing.
>>
>>63710640

I sort of wish we had more of them

episode was alright, but kind of meandering

I think I would've been more pleased if they found a new dungeon and got dosh that way

or something

I dunno, I wasn't very pleased, plus it made me think Kim Kil Wan was a fag

I can sense in John DiMaggio's voice he doesn't really care about the show anymore, he's just sticking with for the m-m-m-money.

This show sucked the minute Finn got his arm back

And then it hit rock bottom with the Breezy bee episode

The only worthwhile episode this season was the guest one, the rest of it's been fucking trash, this show's dead as fuck, end it or actually do something with your plots/characters for once
>>

>>63711137
Should've ended gracefully after the first Lich special
>>
>>63710376

The obvious issue is that it's obviously done from the art schooly childish perspective of someone who doesn't want to "grow up" and it's meant to be immediately clear that Jake's son is a bad guy here.

I mean he's obviously supposed to have his own life and wants and needs, but his character was reduced to a bunch of flat gags. His wife and home show up in the last thirty seconds or so and he's never established as talking to his father or having character based around his own brief childhood.

It feels less like an actual episode and more about the writers working through their own daddy issues and worrying about being taken seriously.

>a shitty ~deep~ artsy crap show?

Adventure Time isn't notable for its world or its humor or its characters. It's notable as a platform for talented cartoonists to tell their stories to a mass audience.

This is a show that has given creative carte blanch to the likes of David O Reilly, Graham Falk, Masaaki Yuasa, and Michael Deforge. And it's given careers to cartoonists like Jesse Moynihan, Tom Herpich, Steve Wolfhard, Rebecca Sugar, Natasha Allegri, Seo Kim, and, most recently, Madeline Flores, among others.

All of these people are creators in their own right. They all make their own comics or animations or whatever.

It's then important to view the show not as something with proper continuity. Don't form your opinion on each story based on your head canon or how the characters interact or what the general trajectory of the show is- all of that is basically set dressing for artists to tell their own stories.

Taking the show on an episode-by-episode basis, and in the context of the episode's story boarders, is incredibly important. Herpich and Wolfhard did Ocarina, for instance, and it's exactly the sort of story you'd see in one of their comics, (pic related.)

What I'm saying is this: Adventure Time has ALWAYS been a "~deep~ artsy show." It's a show that's narrative is dictated by a broad team of independently functioning cartoonists, not by commercial whims or editorial mandates from on-high. The show embraces free-form approaches to story telling in its world, which is where strange, unrelated one-offs, like last weeks "Little Brother" or last seasons Lemonhope two-parter, come from.

this

I watched some of the earlier episodes, about when Finn met marceline, and when finn was afraid of the ocean

they seemed to have a much more "ADVENTURE IS COOL N SHIT" vibe than most of the new episodes do

this episode was dull as fuck, finn could've easily just gone and beat up some baddies, and got the treasure for Wwk to get their house back, and then at the end have jake give WWk the ocarina as a gift, after WWk refused the treasure and stuff.

the message could've been the same, but it was so boring how they conveyed it.

I don't think that's the right word for it. He cares he's just a manchild and a crappy dad who seems to think his fatherhood means being needed in obvious ways. He leapt into action for Jake Jr because she was in danger, the rest of the kids have their shit together for the most part/aren't in danger.
Jake cares about his kids but doesn't really know how to be a father without in your face physical problems like protecting childrearing or playing.

This kind of post finally made me understand why most people on /co/ don't like AT anymore... this place is full of menchild, like absolutely full, so when the show tries something a bit, even slightly, more mature with a decent message they hate it.

The whole "good message" thing is something that kids shows should try more btw, kids learn more from T.V. than from their parents, sadly, and it's good to have a down to earth thing from time to time IMO.
>>
>>63710807

>fuck up their life

Jake was happy as fuck until he come along, and to begin with he seems to REALLY hate capitalism, so I don't see the whole "fucking up your life" in what you said.
>>
>>63712507

You know, it's more like a shit ton of people that go way to far to insult a show they really shouldn't care about that much.

If you don't like it, don't watch it. If you wanna be opinionated and go around saying how you know better, then do so, but don't start crying when people criticize you as well, this is a give and take thing, be a little more self aware.

>Marceline sold Finn and Jake's house for a musical instrument

Okay, they needed to write in a convenient excuse for losing the house, but that doesn't sit right. Marceline was only a callous vampire jerk initially, until she started hanging out with Finn and Jake. Also if you count Seeing Red as canon, she likes to only use her axe bass specifically, for sentimental reasons.

It was about how his dad realizing the orcania might not be worth much, be he actually already made back more than the value of the purchase from the initial rent fees and the gold bone that wouldn't be there in the first place if his son hadn't buried it when it his yard, and would have been accepted as payment if it was noted earlier. His dad might have blown his savings once, but he's possibly learned his lesson there, has a lucrative if unsteady job adventuring and knows how to sell. That's probably better than he initially gave Jake credit for.

Well, we had dungeon episode not long ago.

I'm on it with you, I don't even remember when was her last episode. An episode about her past would even bettersince her present is filled wiith nothing but senile wizards, lesbian innuendo, lustful teenagers and daddy issues
I'd also like to see another episode featuring Finn's pation for violence. Maybe it could make him question how Mushroom War happened. Maybe it's a common human problem?
>>
>>63720959
She sold the Finn and Jake's house to Jake's son.

It make sense she thought it was okay if the house remained in the familly. Was she supposed to know his son would pull some shit on his own father? Plus it was sweet rad guitar
>>
>>63720959
>Marceline was only a callous vampire jerk initially, until she started hanging out with Finn and Jake.
I expect that comes and goes a bit. She only pranked Finn a bit outside of the house thing, so maybe being immortal and flying made her lose perspective of the value home ownership has to others since she can just find a new place to hang so easily.
>Also if you count Seeing Red as canon, she likes to only use her axe bass specifically, for sentimental reasons.
This makes more sense, though I imagine if it's an instrument she had her eye on longer than she used the axe bass she might make an exception.

Kind of surprised they didn't go to PB and ask to her declare imminent domain for her two strongest champions, but Finn and Jake don't understand law much less how to exploit it.

>>63723286
Forgot to add, one thing where Kim Kil Wan was being unreasonable was how he divided the house. He made no distinction between apartments and common areas, renting out the only means upstairs and making the bathroom a private residence.
>>
>>63723718
We have also see her go to a music store and buy other instruments in one of the 5 garbles story. the axe guitar might be her favourite, but it isn't the sole one.
>>
>>63723718
>Kind of surprised they didn't go to PB and ask to her declare imminent domain for her two strongest champions, but Finn and Jake don't understand law much less how to exploit it.

Then why the fuck are they trying to change the show so much? Do they not love it?
>>
>>63723933
They aren't. It's still the same silly show.

We just got Something Big an Little brother. AT has always been about alternating between big adventures and more silly things.

I'd say the only problem with the show is that we only get an episode by week, if we are lucky. It's an 11 minutes show. Adventure time would be much more enjoyable if they broadcasted two new episodes tail to tail each week.
>>
>>63724048

>all of that is basically set dressing for artists to tell their own stories
It did not used to be, anon. The influence of individual boarders become more and more prominent over time, and I think it's gone overboard now, personally. There's a profound lack of coherency, and I think it has hurt the show. Especially because they do try hard to keep the show's continuity functioning, and that's ridiculous when every boarder is going in a different direction.

btw I agree that the show has always been artsy (that's good), but only recently has it become pretentious. It's too aware of its own messages.

Originally, the show took typical morals of kids' shows and violated them and turned them around on purpose. That gave a certain structure that made season 1/2-ish really special.

>>
>>63726232

2. Jake is too much of a papa-bear dad.
>>

>>
>>63729752
Rattleballs addressed that. Really it's down to laziness, stock retards are safe comedy gold when you're stuck with a minute to fill.
>>
>>63729238
>>63729752
I'd like to add that the guards are not relevant in the great scope of things. 99% of the time the guards couldn't help even if they were competent.

In other words killing Root Beer Guy off was a display of prominent ignorance and supreme stupidity.
>>
>>63728758
Then why the fuck did they create RBG in the first place?

I wonder if it's because that guest artist created him and the normal staff didn't want to keep him.
>>
>>63729814
Goddammit I really wish they could evolve beyond the use of stock comedy retards. It's cheap. At least Cinnamon Bun is sorta gone.
>>
>>63728951
I was asking about Finn's father, though. Has HE not been back? I thought I just missed it.
>>
>>63729238
But it did change, the guards got *dumber* over time.
In You Made Me they were smart enough to understand that they had to keep Lemongrab's visits a secret if they wanted to keep spying on him spy on other people, and their old captain was this kinda cool guy with a mustache. In Root Beer guy they fail to put clues together and by James II they can't even recognize a face from a photo.
If the status quo can change in one direction, it should be able to change in the other.
>>
>>63731147
Should be, but it's just entropy. Stupid characters get easier laughs, so characters gets stupider and stupider. It happens in most long-running cartoons.

Characters never change in a way that's more difficult to write, since that would require conscious effort.

It's a problem that they have a character who is kinda designed to be stagnant. He's cursed to be stuck like that forever. All they can do to "develop" IK is change his relationships with other characters.

I would have advocated Simon as actual character, trying to adjust to the future like Betty supposedly is (someplace where we'll never see her). But that boat was missed so hard it exploded.

>>63732387
What if Simon returns by becoming a cyborg or something, but but the parts that are removed re-form into Ice King? Would go with the precedent of Composite Princess and Ricardio. IK could even thank Finn for taking Simon out of him, saying it made him crazy and worry about things other than ruling the Ice Kingdom with an icy fist.
>>
>>63733340
When I first heard the spoiler, I figured they were gonna milk it like a dramatic event.

They way it was actually handled makes me think there was some problem with the character. Either the VA or the character's existence interfering with already finished plots.

>>63733728
The VA quit because he felt the character was pointless if he wasn't able to turn the Banana Guard competent.
>>
>>63733811
lel, so they'd rather kill off an interesting, useful new character than change the thing he was introduced to change? Seems a clear indicator of the staff's insufferable attitude. The banana guards aren't even that funny, guys... that schtick is already old.

Where's the sauce of that info?

Either way, why in the world would they value keeping the retard banana guards over the chance for PB to get a more competent army? If they're trying to play up PB's dictator history and general evilness, why not keep RBG by her side. He was one of the few candy people who was not clinically retarded, and they kill him off just like he's nothing?

The relatively new (season 4, I think?) development of the banana guards being idiots is mildly funny, at best. Well, maybe 10 year olds disagree.

If hope they don't force in "comedic relief" like that because they fear kiddies getting bored. Because that would be sad.

Assuming that this rumor is even true. Where's the source?

>>63735255
He's right that this is what the show is NOW. It's like an experimental ground for each writer to explore their own issues through these characters, and do stuff that strongly resembles their personal work.

But he's wrong that that has been the main draw of the show since forever. A few years ago, the show hung together better as a whole product. You usually couldn't tell who was writing. Now each writer has their own pet interests and sense of humor and special characters. It's artistically free, but it's also self-indulgent.
>>
Hi /co/. I have a problem with Adventure Time. How come it isn't written specifically for me anymore? Have they forgotten that I am their core audience? I can't help but think sometimes that they think other people are also their audience. How do we fix Adventure Time so it's made just for me again?
>>
>>63735720
I don't think the staff thinks much about their audience, really. They do what they want. Which means it's not dumbed down for kids-- there's complexity that adults love. But there's also enough bullcrap to piss off adults and bore children at the same time.
