can someone explain to me why this couple has such a small fanbase in the show? it seems like all the ideal or good romantic relationships are largely ignored by fans today and I am getting tired of it!

Fictional relationships feed off drama, Tension, and conflict. All bad things in 'real' healthy relationships.this is why often people don't get together until the end of series (or don't get together ever if your an asshole Suit) the 'fun' comes from the dance as it were, the hinting, the build up, the teasing, etc. once they get together,t hat's it, you are left only with the options to either advance the relationship (which is risky, people hate change and suits hate risks) reset things (everyone hates this) or do something controversial like have the ship sink/they break up (people get REALLY pissed at this)
Quite simply the most 'fun' couples to watch long term in fiction are usually fuckd up in some way, the ideal healthy couples will end up some manner of boring/annoying without any sort of advancement

I didn't say it won't happen i said this is why it's not massively popular. they have a natural friendship, which makes them hooking up logical, but 'boring' from an entertainment standpoint. the enjoyment for mos people comes from the conflicts that prevent character hooking up. star crossed lovers, love across social caste, bad boy good girl. whore into house wife, etc.
Remember how avatar had a somewhat natural flow to Aang Katarra, yet the crazy fans preferred her with Zuko entirely because it made more cliche conflicts between them? it's like that.

the short answer is they aren't popular because they aren't a cliche soap opera drama ship, they will probably hook up in the end unless the writers get off on cockbocking so you don't need to worry about it's popularity.
