There was a fair bit of lore behind Johns' rings: red rings were created by Atrocitus from the blood of the Five Inversions, blue rings were created by Ganthet and Sayd to help the GLs, orange rings were created long ago by Krona and stolen by Larfleeze, indigo rings were created by Abin Sur to help reabilitate criminals, violet rings were created by Zamarons as a way of standing up to the GLs, black rings were created by Nekron to take over the universe, white rings were created by the Life Entity to fight off Nekron

The black ring was the absence of emotion, just like black is only possible in the absence of visible light. Red+black=red, just like red light + no light = red.This is just retarded.

There have been cases of things that were inked with too much focus on the blue highlights, leading them to be seen by future artists as blue.
Originally furry Beast was meant to have black fur. If memory serves, Spider-Man's costume was also originally meant to be red and black.
