It's the Phil Bourassa style that has been DC's house animation style for just about every DTV or cartoon series for the better part of the past decade. to be fair, if they're continuing the universe, where else is he supposed to go? He's obviously not the leader, Nightwing is. Dick just has to adopt him into the team because Damian's not going to just sit back. He's either fighting alone or joining the team, so the safest bet is joining the team.
Just think of a lot of those kid movies where the kid joins the team of really cool older people, it's like that. He'll hold the team back but then in the end be central to the team's success, etc. But he's not the leader.
