Disney released a new clip today for the series premiere. I know people have no expectations for this show, being on Disney Junior and all, but I like what they're doing with it. That crocodile fight alone in the episode they previewed shows they're not going to sugar-coat everything.

I found it interesting that in the episode with the crocodiles, they had some dialogue about how the bad guy must be given a chance, and they speculated that he might turn into an alright leader when he grows and gets more life experience. And now an episode with the message that even if hyenas have been the villains in the franchise, they're not all bad. The fact that they've given room for a less black-and-white good/evil dichotomy makes me kinda hopeful that maybe the series might have room for a villain redemption arc some day in the future. I have a soft spot for optimistic messages like that.

I get the feeling this is actually meant to be a purposeful subtle conflict in the show. They come right out and have Kion say "I don't want to be like Scar" and draw all kinds of parallels to Scar and Mufasa's relationship, and one of Scar's big beefs was having to play second fiddle to Mufasa. Except here instead of the situation being the villain's motivation, they're showing the protagonist resist corruption.

No, instead of "hey you know you're like Scar why don't you have his old place and job", I think it would be more interesting if Kion was given the opportunity to be like Simba and take that step, only to decide he wanted to sever the pride-lands in a different way. The lion guard would be what he created as a new way to make a difference while being true to himself.
