First thread of 2016!
But we didn't start numbering right from the first one of 2015, so it could be #228...
Also, if we go back to square one... should we get a new logo too, maybe? Nothing too different, just a small variation

>>
>>78650955
To be fair, a lot of people that do good adventure comics or whatnot take side works in porn comics. It's hugely common practice in Japan too, with creators making porn of their own work under a different name. Nothing wrong with maximizing your revenue streams to support your passion bruh.
>>
>>78650955

Not a "Pron" artist or comic, just, tease them with the sexies and cuties is all, and they will grovel at your feet, like 90% of 4chaners and internet-anons do.

I'm just bein' goofy.

>to make it bearable for my readers.

It's actually pretty decent atm, it's not so much as an eye-sore as before, but it's progressing very nicely. You have a lot of potential to play around with this, your designs are simple and simple is effective and powerful. You are lacking variety atm, and I would like to see more expression from your comic characters, rather than just those generic mono-tone grumpy faces or these ( ' _ ' ) faces, just of a simple line mouth, experiment with lips perhaps, and contorting the face to reinforce the emotion that the character is emoting.

What's the best thing to do when you have like 20 projects that interest you but you can only work on one and plan another at most?
Is there any point in projecting a character to be best girl?
>>
>>78652067

>best girl

What now?
>>
>>78652067
I generally handle that by writing down everything I can think of on the other projects I can think of, and putting there someplace I'll remember to look for em when I can devote the necessary attention to em. Trying to do all of them at once will, at best, get them all done kinda shitty. Keep a queue of projects and focus on one or two at a time.

Not really that proud about this page, desu,. But unfortunatelly Christmas and New Years week were pretty charged for me and I sort had to rush a bit of it and didn't have much time to re-work the pencils.
Oh well, will try to do better next week, how was everyone's new year?

>>78647552
It's real good.
My only nitpick is that I would have but some people in the background looking all confused in panel 7, since I assume she was in a pretty crowded fair, but that's not that important anyway, the art itself is excellent.

>>78653773
>>78654450

Honestly, it's better to let the readers decide who their best girl is. Make them different, but also make them all appealing in their own way.
I think actually trying to make a "best girl" risks just making a character that's too perfect to be interesting

Dewd it seems you are having a problem with your arm-less character because a lot of the stock poses in your visual library use two hands.
I suggest you do something like >>78651689
but with poses rather than facial expressions. First fill it up with poses where a character with all their limbs uses hand and arm gestures to strengthen the pose. Then do it again, but this time your character has to communicate the same idea only using one hand.

Buffers, like insurance, going to the doctor, doing your class assignments and not living up to your neck in debt, are for people afraid of life!

But no seriously I am going to get myself a buffer or I am going to die in the attempt. Hopefully before the end of this chapter.
Also in the next chapter I should probably plan things out a bit more thoroughly because this whole "not sure what's actually gonna happen on this page until two days before it goes up" thing is pretty annoying.

Some progress on page two.

Lot of moving and rejiggering speech bubbles. Got another inset panel (or maybe two), to add, then hopefully just a bit of texture added to the flat colours (made a start with some of the big colour backdrop panels), neaten up the gutter spacing, and that's that.

Penciller thinks someone else should get the line 'Those madmen...' He might be right, annoyingly.

We got a tumblr now at peaceoneers.tumblr.com
That simple webcomic theme is great, very new to tumblr but seems like a good platform until we can build up enough content to warrant a website.
>>

Without text you can really see how much personality you put into your speech bubbles. That's crazy good.

I'm mostly digital. The second page I sketched up while I was at my weekly pen and paper RPG session, took a photo of it with my phone, and referred to it as I drew. Of course, it came out a little differently than I originally wanted on account of my being poor at figure drawing. I'm still a little better at pencil drawing despite having years of practice on a digitizer - but that's also partly because my tablet doesn't have a screen so I just have to watch what I draw as a I draw it.

Her present character design is being pulled straight from a game I made a year ago called Ouroboros: The Sacrifice, where I did my best to emulate an 'ink on paper' feel without using shadows or color (with exceptions to the odd scene, such as pic related). I wanted her to almost embody the concept of 'larger than life', and pieced her together over I think 8 concept drawings. Before then I had no portrait of her beyond what her Scythe looked like but I like the current incarnation enough to keep it this way indefinitely.

If you'd like a link, it's presently being hosted here: http://afterdeath.the-comic.org/

Apologies that it's not more than a splash page for the moment. I should be putting up page one fairly soon. I'm about 2/3 with the inking of it.

I'm concerned about how much time it's taking though, so I might scale back the detail on the comic some to make updates come quicker. 2-3 days/page doesn't leave me a whole lot of time to myself after all haha.

Art and drawing is cool as hell, but I'm not going to lie: The black spray-canning isn't really working for me. I feel like you should use actual tones, or find some other way to achieve that effect.

I can't really describe why, but it sort of clashes with the beautiful art, and just looks kinda cheap on it.
>>
>>78678344
I have one. I have no idea what to do with it. Every so often I get a few pity bucks.
>>
>>78678715
>The black spray-canning isn't really working for me. I feel like you should use actual tones, or find some other way to achieve

Yeah, it doesn't read well from a distance. I switched it back from noise to ellipse toning. Looks a lot more 'generic' this way though until you get up close.
>>
>>78678344
best way to a successful patreon is to either appeal to a niche group (fetish comics, gender identity comics), or just have a great comic. Most of you posting here should not start a patreon, you'll just embarrass yourself.
>>
>>78679467
cant embarrass yourself without a following

>>78678344
I have a patreon related to my comic.

Number one tip, have fans before you make it. A lot of them. Patreons are this webcomic generations T-shirt design. You make it too early and you look sad and desperate.
>>
>>78679558
Right. Be sure to post your patreon here. It'll be the only funny joke you've posted in your life.

It's not that rare - the English letter ſ was only abolished in like the nineteenth century.

But yeah the rune system in the viking era (the younger Futhark) consisted of just 16 runes compared to the previous system (the elder Futhark) which had 24 runes - runes for similar sounds were folded together (like, the rune that used to mean "a" could now mean anything from æ to o), which is one of the reasons why it's really hard to reconstruct the language of the period. The later runic systems had something like 27 runes, much like modern Scandinavian alphabets.

It's a room that I'll have to draw on 3 pages, so I figured it's a good enough excuse to finally try Sketchup. It's very easy and free to use, I'm not sure about speed though. There's plenty of assets available, so you don't have to model your own chairs, desks etc. If you have a recurring location, it's likely worth it.

What do you guys think about contests as a method of advertisement?

I've been thinking about this for quite some time, because I have a small collection of duplicate Steam games I could use as prices.

Maybe I could make a fanart contest, but I've never made something like that and I'm not sure how to distribute the prices. Would it be better to bind a specific price to a specific place (for example: 1st place: Valkyria Chronicle) or should I let the winners decide what they want?

I'm also not sure if this is a good idea, because it feels like paying people to draw fanart when they're not even interested in my comic, but they might check it out afterwards.
What do you think?

In stat-related news, for the one person who cares, I'm breaking bandwidth records every day thanks to my scientifically calibrated* Project Wonderful ad campaign. I've used more bandwidth this month than in all of October.
*no

It should be noted however that it's also much easier for my site to use more bandwidth for the same or even a smaller number of new visitors coming in, on account of the comic's archives are much larger than they were 3 months ago.
>>

>>78695803

>>
>>78695803
her social awkwardness is a side-effect of sociopathy instead of the usual cuter reasons. she's a weirdo
>>
>>78695803
The thing with Watamote is that she was made to be unlikeable.
When the reader enter her mind, she's rotten to the core. She self justify doing stupid shit, and always think she's in the right.
A likeable character would have her or his mind showing that the character has every desire to do things right, but when the anxiety kicks in and the reader sees the failure, it becomes more endearing.

Watamote is evident that was made to make MC hateable as fuck.

I'm actually already doing this with my character so I guess I'm fine, although I still worry about Watamoting them.
>>
>>78696034
That's the average middle class family in Japan.
The brother is far more sociable and he didn't grew up as a weirdo who can't even look at a person without thinking they're sluts.
>>
>>78696120
we don't see his thoughts but it looks to me like the only reason he seems more stable is that he lucked into being popular
>>
>>78696165
I think that the title perfectly explains both characters. "It's not my fault I'n not popular". He didn't lucked out to be popular, he related to people instead of rejecting them and now he have friends and is popular in his circle, while Tomoko decides to shut in and blames on everyone else all of her failures.
See that most of her classmates don't dislike her, but she's a ghost to them because she doesn't interact with anyone at all.

I stopped reading it a long time ago, did they explained who was the person in the bear suit that hugged her?
>>
>>78694588

>>
>>78696353
technically the title is 'no matter how you look at it, it's YOUR fault i'm not popular' which is even more appropriate. she's been dealt a bad hand, but she's never going to get over it because she blames everyone else

>>78696426
oh and i actually disagree with a lot of what you said. kind of important that you know you're wrong about that but oh well

>>78686830
The top part of "After" is blending into the background too much, I think. While "Death" stands out and is clear, even in the thumbnail, you have to really look to see the word "After". Which doesn't help, given that it's the first word in the phrase "After Death". Perhaps have the gradient run from red/pink to gold, rather than deep blue to red?

Also, consider having the skull and horn a slightly lighter tone of blue, to help it stand out from the night sky and hood a little more. Everything's a uniform shade of deep blue, so no major forms or shapes stand out.

>>78687185
Take a look at a comparison chart to see how digitigrade legs work, to see where exactly the knees and ankles should be; it should be more of a Z shape than a <. But then, crocodiles are plantigrade, so a human-like leg would be more appropriate.
Otherwise, that's some great improvement over 4 months.
>>

If it helps, I do have some YTs of sped-up painting I've done which prominently show me doing linework in them.

There's nothing wrong with using the tools at your disposal. I'm just at an impasse, I can't seem to ink, but my pencil look decent. Sucks.

Are you trying to do smooth, singular, strokes? That's what makes attractive lineart from what I've discovered: getting it right in one stroke.

It does take a little more finesse and practice to vary the line-widths like I do on-the-fly but that's just icing. Smooth, clean, lines will make your inking look professional.

Oh man. Oh man. Oh man.

Thanks! That looks awesome!

I never know how much stabilizing is TOO much. I always feel like I'm cheating if I jack it up too high.

I also gotta get used to doing THIS more. I've been drawing with my wrist all my life, so it's really hard to get used to drawing with the shoulder, especially with such a small tablet.

Oh don't feel too bad. Anime/manga style faces are the worst for me. I simply cannot do them in one stroke.

I'm struggling with this too, good luck friend.

Give 'em some charm. If they can't be cool, make people want to protect them. They can be sweet, endearing, thoughtful, or empathic to others.

who here actually accepts their webcomic is shit and is actively trying to make it better?
>>
>My cousin is fat
>Sometimes she gets teased by classmates
>Decide to make a webcomic involving her creating an imaginary friend that makes her proud of being fat and uses her powers to turn her bullies into foods for her to eat and gain super powers

I have no idea why I thought of this but I'm already regretting it, but when I told my cousin about it, she completely loved it.

Mine isn't great; a good comic is much more than passable art. But I'm trying to work through that and bring it up to what I'd like it to be. Hard work, though.

WDFF does lack certain aesthetic qualities, but I feel that helps drive the narrative style of the comic.
That being said, I am working on improving my artwork for the sake of my more professional level works.
That and I am actively pursuing ways to drive fiscal success through my love of comics and all things nerdy.

It's funny and cute as long as you dont overthink it, the way a kid doesn't
make it for her, but for god's sake don't publish it

Of course I'm shit and of course I'm getting better.

Who here doesn't have a webcomic but likes to bitch about people who do?

>getting this rustled by bait
Where others respond like well adjusted hard working people, you take it personally and lash out. Sounds like it hit a nerve.

projecting much? if that's rustled then I'm russell brand

>responds defensively and with maymays

Looks like I hit the nail right on the head.
