It's literally just boxes, so I think the original person just recreated the iconic NWA picture and used various images for the individual blocks, primarily MAA portraits, which are high resolution and generally really good.That's what I remember doing for this one using Marvel Heroes portraits anyways.

What is the best hero to get, considering I want a ranged AoE. Jean seems to be what I'm looking for, although I don't have enough experience on the game to say so

Jean is high tier, good dmg, good survival, pretty fun.
Scarlet Witch is generally considered to be the best, or one of the best.
Doom is good, but will rely more on his summons.
Silver Surfer has some of the best AoE, but it's a different playstyle than most. Most of his damage comes from dashing back and forth across the screen.
I'd pick one of those 4 personally, Jean is a good choice though. Especially if she is one of your favorite characters from the comics.
