In 2002, Warner Bros. Pictures greenlit BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN, hoping the rekindle both franchises in one fell swoop. SE7EN writer Andrew Kevin Walker penned the script and TROY's Wolfgang Petersen was hired to direct. The movie would start Jude Law as Superman and Colin Farrell as Batman. This was the story.

>Superman foils a bombing at the Metropolis National Park and is transporting the terrorists to Stryker's Island when he finds out they're robots with built-in Kryptonite bombs. After nearly being killed, Superman collects a sample of the Kryptonite.

>Clark Kent later attends the wedding of Bruce Wayne and Elizabeth Miller, a wealthy humanitarian. Clark and Bruce are old friends and have fought together many times. Clark is recovering from his divorce from Lois Lane, who was unable to "share him with the world", while Bruce has given up on the identity of Batman after the Joker murdered Robin and subsequently died in an explosion. Alfred Pennyworth and Jim Gordon have likewise passed away, and wheelchair-bound Barbara Gordon is the Commissioner of Police in Gotham and Bruce's ex-girlfriend.

>Bruce and Elizabeth enjoy their honeymoon in Hawaii when Elizabeth is unexpectedly shot with a poisoned dart laced with the Joker's laughing toxin. She dies before Superman hears Bruce's cries and comes to help them. After the funeral, Bruce returns to Gotham and descends into the Batcave, becoming Batman once again. Superman attempts to dissuade Bruce, as he had become increasingly violent following Robin's death, but Bruce ignores him, blaming Superman for not being fast enough to save Elizabeth. Anticipating Superman might be a threat, Bruce begins to monitor him.

>Clark takes a leave of absence from the Daily Planet and returns to Smallville, Kansas, to recover from Lois' departure and analyze the Kryptonite sample he had earlier collected using his spaceship's board computer.

>While there, he reconnets with Lana Lang, his childhood sweetheart who never fulfilled her dreams of leaving Smallville to explore the world. Lana is aware of Clark's secret and the two eventually develop a relationship. Clark considers giving up on being Superman to prevent the burden of his responsabilities from ruining his relationship once again, but Lana is supportive, and Clark realizes how much he is needed when he prevents a tornado from destroying Smallville.

>Meanwhile, Batman locates the Joker's old associate, Winslow Schott, also known as "Toyman", and presses him for the identity of the man who is using the Joker's laughing toxin. Toyman reveals that the Joker himself has returned from the dead before being assassinated. Batman then exhumes the Joker and finds his body gone. Barbara attempts to reach out to Bruce, concerned with his extremist methods, but he rebuffs her.

>In Smallville, the analysis indicates that the Kryptonite is artificial and made by LexCorp. Superman then visits Lex Luthor in Stryker's Island, where he is detained after a failed attempt to detonate a Kryptonite bomb in upper atmosphere to destroy Superman. Luthor reveals that LexCorp collaborated with the United States government on Project Achilles Heel, dedicated to developing Kryptonite-based anti-Superman weaponry to be used should Superman go rogue. Batman learns of this and infiltrates Achilles Heel's headquarters to steal Kryptonite samples.

>The Joker and his men attack the police station and steal the Bat-Signal before Batman intervenes, only to learn that the Joker now has super-human abilities. After a chase through the streets of Metropolis that causes widespread damage, the Joker escapes.

>Superman confronts Batman, infuriated by his recklessness, and announces that, if Batman further spirals out of controle, he will have to stop him. Batman then assures Superman he's willing to kill him should he interfere with his vendetta, and the two part on bad terms.

>Meanwhile, Luthor escapes from prison by using his long fingernails to tap into the guards' nervous system and control them like puppets.

>The Joker uses the Bat-Signal to lure Batman into a final confrontation in Metropolis. Aware of the impending casualties, Superman confronts Batman, but Batman is prepared, having built a Kryptonite-linen armor for himself. The two heroes engage in a violent battle through the streets, which ends with Superman defeating Batman. However, while Superman is distracted, Batman stabs him with a Kryptonite arrow and leaves him in agony.

>An injured Batman then confronts the Joker in the Metropolis clock tower and is soundly beaten. The Joker then reveals that Luthor deduced Batman's secret identity and revived him to manipulate Batman into destroying Superman, and that Elizabeth was one of Luthor's agents under his employ, meant to seduce Bruce and then die to cause him to go on a rampage. Before the Joker can deliver the killing blow, however, Superman intervenes, having pulled the arrow from his body. Together, the two defeat the Joker and his men, just as Luthor arrives in a advanced combat exoskeleton stolen from Achilles Heel and throws the Joker off the building for failing to kill Batman or Superman.

>Superman and Batman battle Luthor together, and, although outmached, they are able to disable Luthor's weapons one by one until he's vulnerable enough to be defeated. Barbara arrives with tbe police and arrests Luthor, but the Joker's body is never found. Batman is certain that he is alive. Superman assures him they'll find the Joker together. Superman and Batman put their differences aside, make amends for their fight and become partners once again.

>Jude Law as Superman
> Nicolas Cage as Superman
>Bald Cavill as Superman

even though cavill is good, what is it with receding hairlines and Superman? Is WB retarded?

who would have played joker

They never made it that far in casting, but Crispin Glover was a favorite back then.

Also, fun fact, Christian Bale was first approached for Batman during production of BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN, while Paul Rudd reportedly auditioned for Superman.
