The story is that Jeph Loeb is a good buddy of Quesada and Bendis and other Marvel biggies, and he was a big star writer so they considered it a big coup to get him away from DC.

But his work hadn't made sense in years, even before his son's death; Hush and Batman/Superman were all cool moments for the sake of coolness, regardless of whether they made any sense. That's not such a bad thing in superhero comics, but combine it with the mandate to make the Ultimate line "edgy" again and it became a mess of pointless violence and absurd moments.

I can understand why Loeb was hired, he's been treated like a king ever since his son died. The slimy thing is at this point he's practically using his son's death as leverage. He disgusts me as a human being, both in his actions, and physically. That said, I just want to know why they dug up some 90's fossil to do the art for a series that was known for having ultra realistic and cinematic art.

But there was nothing wrong with Ultimates 3 besides the art (while good) didn't fit what had come before.

There is NOTHING wrong with the twins potentially being incestuous.

But it's head-bangingly dumb. I know there's a double standard because it's OK for Silver Age comics to be dumb and make no sense but we expect something more from Jeph Loeb. But that's basically what he is. He doesn't care if anything makes sense as long as it looks cool, and artists like that because his scripts allow them to draw cool and crazy things.

Loeb is a good writer if you have an artist who enjoys drawing cool things and has a lot of control over the shape of the project.

So his year doing Batman with Jim Lee was better than Brian Azzarello's year doing Superman with Lee, even though Azzarello is a much better writer. But Lee is the kind of artist who dominates everything he does, and Loeb knew that the way to work with him is just to throw in all the things that Lee is good at drawing. It's the same with Tim Sale. Loeb's scripts don't have any depth but they are good at putting in things Sale is good at drawing.
