LAST ISSUES

The Squad ride is almost over. Sad
>>
Hey storytimer!

Ewing kills it again today, and I swear to god he probably has a cabinet just full of old No-Prize letters.

I think about how incredible he'd be if he was an editor. An editor with actual pull. Can you imagine a guy like him in Brevoort's position? Or Alonso's?

Rucka's Wondy continues to be wildly decompressed, and I'm not feeling the page styles and paneling. It's really feeling like a digital comic, some Injustice thing. Definitely not Rucka's usual delivery, which straddles a kind of middle ground between decompression and old Perez style density.

I have opinions on where Nick Spencer is going with Captain America, but less as a story, and more my growing wariness around Spencer at large. Got that hair on my back kind of feeling that he's not too far from a Waid style "I know black people better than black people" deal.
>>
>>83993215
I would read all the Ostrander Squad he felt like writing

thank you DC Khomics
>>
manta is a dick
>>
Aquaman was nice especially with the new husbando
>>
Wondy was slow but nice

Aquaman was pretty fun and I am amused at how fast /co/ took to Sark
>>
>>83993234

Civil War is now Bendis stumbling around Marvel like Mr Magoo and Ewing is running around after him fixing everything before stuff breaks or Bendis hurts someone

Rocafort's art don't hurt
>>
>>83993234
>I think about how incredible he'd be if he was an editor. An editor with actual pull. Can you imagine a guy like him in Brevoort's position? Or Alonso's?
Yeah, the dream is definitely Ewing in Brevoort or Bendis' shoes. Proof we're living in a broken world.
>>
>>83993234
I didn't read anything today because I was busy with Good Stuff, but I did see someone say "WHY CAN'T EWING BE WRITING ALL OF THIS HE MAKES PEOPLE MAKE SENSE" about Carol

>>83993234
>Got that hair on my back kind of feeling that he's not too far from a Waid style "I know black people better than black people" deal.
Oh, EWW. I know the most woke black dude I follow on comics was not happy with his Sam writing pre-HYDRA stunt.

I hope husbando is not dead ;_;
>>
Flash was good, set about establishing Barry so he's not a Silver Age blank slate. worried the plot is gonna be very standard

>>83993290

He did a flashback showing Carol recruit the team which had Carol talk about what happens when they aren't ready for the Apocalyptic threat and it's such a quick, simple way to make Civil War 2 make some sense. Impressive stuff

Decompression was a mistake.

>Definitely not Rucka's usual delivery, which straddles a kind of middle ground between decompression and old Perez style density.
Honestly, I wonder if this is some kind of editorial directive. Rucka's usually better at drawing things out.

>>83993234
The sad thing is the explanation is simply that Ewing gives a shit about characters and Bendis doesn't.
>>
>>83993290
Like, I'm of two minds of it. On the one hand, Sam's position as Cap would absolutely be political, especially in this current climate, and race'd absolutely be a factor. It should matter in the book, it should be explored and all that. But... the funeral especially feels like he's starting to reach beyond "this should be in the book" and into way beyond where someone like him should be writing. It feels too much like a centrist white columnist talking about how he knows all about racism. Especially since Spencer has shown he can't take crit from those on the left side of the position. Like remember when Bendis wouldn't accept any criticism from queer writers and fans about how he handled Iceman? Getting a bit of that.

Plus, his takedown of positions from the right aren't wrong, but just... hamhanded as hell. Very, very overwrought, over the top.

Also, he somehow fucking forgot about Rhodey's own family at his funeral? What the fuck. Ewing remembered that.

I will give him that Rage coming back as fighting paid off cops is a great move, but within the larger context of his run so far, it's got that "You are seriously going to reach too far soon" feeling to it.
>>
>>83993316
He'll be okay, why would you introduce somebody so likeable just to off him? ;_; it just don't add up!
>>
>>83993359
>Broly
I don't understand why people LOOOVED Broly so damn much. Honestly, that movie wasn't very good and Broly himself was barely a character.

But I guess we were all dumb teens at some point.
>>
>>83993414
I actually really like the Rage/Night Thrasher dynamic from the New Warriors we read. I think you could run far with that in a lot of books (potentially plays into the new Nighthawk too).
>>
>>83993431
No idea why atleast the pantera song fits perfect. RIP vic voice

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXBrmlcADJA
>>
>>83993414
Expanding on this, I think Ewing hit a good balance in his Mighty Avengers, like the moments with Adam and Luke, dealing with their race and their history in a way that felt right, but not going into that bad land of "I, the white writer, am the most qualified to write about race struggles".

>>83993481
Night Thrasher being back is great, Rage is great, I'd love for them both to be on a new New Warriors.

Of course, Marvel would have to promote it.
>>
>>83993215
Is it even really suicide if the act takes 5 and a half years?
>>
There's a joke in Cap about the new Inhuman being named Homer btw

>>83993346

>>83993564
He was the responsible for the RICH PEOPLE GET IN THE ARK GO GO GO, right?

Also, Sim's misogyny STARTS garden variety, and then becomes truly fucking unbelievably out of this world. Like, his ideas about why women are the way they are gets up into "reptilians control the earth" level of complex batshit.

Missing a page in between here
>>
>>83993722
No, it doesn't resonate, mostly because of the characters picked. Fury Jr especially feels like a weird pick - he doesn't feel like he'd get along with a lot of these dudes. Black people absolutely have spaces where they just talk among themselves, but spread across these many characters... it doesn't gel.

Again - Fury Jr. He barely knows a lot of these guys and would probably act to kill a bunch of them if SHIELD gave the say-so. What the fuck is he doing there?

What he does get right is that Sam and Rhodey didn't know each other a ton.

There's zero-effort cheesecake, and Rocafort is decidedly not zero-effort. You give him the freedom to do whatever with a female character's outfit and he comes up with some cool stuff, Mac and those Wakanda ladies are pure clothing porn.
>>
>>83993789

I'll get on it then.

To be fair, most of them DO know each other, or at the very least Cage knows all of them.

But honestly, I can't even stand the thought of reading the damn thing because I don't want to read some whiny dude bitch about how girls stick waah waah waah. It's like, if I made a comic where I ranted for ages about why humans suck, you wouldn't want to read that because it's fucking annoying.

I have the first phonebook, and the thing is, right from the start, which is a pretty bog-standard S&S story, there's a marvelous energy and style and quality to every aspect of it. I've read a whole lot of less compelling #1s.
>>
>>83993864
Cerebus is 300 issues long dude, it's not solely Sim ranting about one topic

I mean yeah there's that one chunk where that does happen but that's not the majority of it
>>
>>83993864
Cerebus starts mediocre, then it gets really good. Really, really good.

Then it not only gets bad, it gets CRAZY.

Take this interview with him and amplify it by 100, if you can imagine that.

I've seen people mostly happy about today's issue, apparently they are happy that Bruce and Tim actually had a conversation and I've seen some people happy that Tim/Steph is a thing again which is silly because Tim is clearly either gay or asexual
>>
>>83994110
Oh yeah. I also saw him respond to the interviewer's tweets and saying that there were some typos and things like that that "totally" change the meaning of his responses, which smacks of when he and Slott would say similar things about leaked issues and moments that turned out to be... exactly what they looked like.

I really wanted the interviewer to go, "So, hypothetical: Would you kill Miles as a tragic moment for, I don't know, Peter Parker and Kaine?" Or just push him, at all. But I feel like 1. He wants to give Bendis some benefit of the doubt and 2. Knows that if you start pressing a writer about this stuff, they get very, very defensive.

I notice a lot of writers when you go "Hey, this thing you wrote is kinda racist/homophobic/whatever" and they immediately go "I didn't mean that at all how dare you I'm no bigot I didn't join any hate groups" blah blah blah, kind of ignoring that even the most well meaning people can write and do ignorant shit, because we just don't know things or we absorb hateful shit. I'm surprised nobody popped me in the mouth for some of the shit I said back in high school.

Lots of "I'm not a racist" and having to explain, nobody said you were, but you're writing racist cliches, unintentionally.

You can see this on twitter too, after every big blowup - be it in poor writing on the page or in some editor or creator being a harasser - everyone's closing ranks fucking immediately. That any of them actually stepped out to say "Beganza's harassment was bad" is a little unprecedented.

>>83994238
PROTIP: if you have to take to twitter to clarify later, like that it was public, or that Carol wasn't drinking alcohol, you need to do that second/third pass, and communicate to the artist and Editorial better

The "you fucked up" stuff is complicated, because 1) we're all human and defensive and 2) sometimes the charges are very true and sometimes they're more a case of leveraging "I didn't like this" into "This hurts me" because the latter is more effective.

>>83994289

>>83994585
Bendis has created multiple black OCs, if anyone can kill a black character, it's him. The way he did it was dumb though.
>>
>>83994568
Unlikely. Rhodey fills in as disposable black guy (RIP Bill Foster), Bendis gets to do yet another Clint killing, after that... I don't think they've got a lot of killings planned. Some more z-list heroes and villains get killed, perhaps even ones they already killed off in events. The big kill would be Tony, and they're absolutely not going to do that, even though he's fucking earned it by now.

Rhodey and Clint feel like they're going to be the only "big" deaths.

The line of:
>Hulk is predicted to rampage
>Clint kills Bruce
>Cho kills Clint
Seems solid enough.
>>
>>83994665
I wanted to try and kick start a mass Future Shock submissions thing once. 2000AD take them every year, but tone/genre and the fact it has to be physically posted mean it probably wouldn't fly too well here.
>>
>>83994649
Hnng, look at the formal game going on here

why didn't we get that Tiny Hal in the Gutters story
>>
>>83994686
>>83994686

yeah a zine you really just need a...well /co/ wouldn't like a tumblr. maybe wordpress? i dunno how blogs work
>>
>>83994648
Hm. Kind of a shame if so. This thing could at least have the decency to be a glorious trainwreck. Though from the chatter, it may already be so.
>>
>>83994688
>>
I love, I SAY I FUCKING LOVE how Deadshot is completely unaffected by the jungle, and the different ways you can interpret that.
>>
>>83994726
>Ivy, Nature Goddess...hates the jungle.
>>
>>83994688
>why didn't we get that Tiny Hal in the Gutters story
god isn't that kind

shit, at least we got that Itty story in Sugar & Spike
>>
>>83994721
It certainly seems to be a trainwreck for Marvel's event model, and I am so grateful for that. Their most slapdash event they've done in awhile, and I really hope actual sales, not just presales, are down, down, down.

>>83994742
Ostrander seemed to really want to focus on pockets of Ivy's hypocrisy. Works in some places, not great in others.
>>
>>83994742
>>83994760
His Ivy is fundamentally venal, and I dig it
>>
>>83994755
True, and I will 100% take that
>>
>>83994727
Is he that broken, or does he legitimately not give a single solitary fuck? YOU DECIDE!

>>83994742
Yeah, that makes no sense. Some botanist she is.
>>

hey, I like plants, and yet I do not like slogging through tick-infested brush
>>
>>83994843

>>
It is truly astounding how after this first fantastic run, Suicide Squad is just... bad. Bad bad bad.

Who do I blame for killing off Yolanda and Beth again? Against fucking Eclipso?
>>
>>83994887
'strumpet' is a great, great word for someone like Werner

>>83994888
the 90s

they got Mark Shaw, too
>>
>>83994887
Dude in bottom panel looking and sounding like the kind of guy trying to start a fight at a gas station convenience store.
>>
>>83994888
>It is truly astounding how after this first fantastic run, Suicide Squad is just... bad. Bad bad bad.

That's hardly unique. Look at the Titans, they haven't had a good run since Wolfman.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IvaV4eww6w

So in this thing, Sharp confirmed we're gonna see Cheetah, Ares, and Dr Psycho, and maybe possibly more classic villains in Wonder Woman
>>
>>83994887
>Boomer wants to mack with Ivy
Dude. Digger. Nah, man. I hope that's a joke, cause while bad girls are great, there's limits. You gotta have standards.
>>
>>83994939
Circe would be a great movie villain
>>
>>83994930
pls do good Percy and Abnett
>>
>>83994949
Do you really think Boomer has standards?
>>
>>83994930
Let's be fair, Suicide Squad never had a Terry Long shaped albatross around their neck.

>>83994939
About fucking god damn time.

Diana coming to Barbara for help was my favorite thing about this issue. I'd actually like to see a legacy of Cheetahs. Working in Priscilla somehow would be great.
>>
>>83994902
>>
>>83994968
Boomer has no standards but a health sense of self-preservation, and he's seen what she can do
>>
>>83994939
>more Wonder Rogues
Good. Decompression or no, Rucka actually bothers to use Diana's villains. Hell, they were among the highlights of his original run.

>>83994968
..... Point.
>>
>>83995008
>>
Oh man if we get Wonder Rogues then, can you imagine...

...Dallas-esque Veronica Cale?!
>>
>>83995026
>>
>>83995082
holy shit, Amanda
>>
>>83995097
Deadshot doing a Dredd here.
>>
>>83995097
WHAT THE FUCK AMANDA

I have no idea what the fuck this mind game is but I love it.
>>
>>83995097
I'm going to miss elevated discourse Vertigo so much
>>
>>83995030
It'd be really weird if Cale weren't in this run. Rucka created her after all.

>>83994976
There's been like four Cheetahs. Priscilla Rich, Deborah Domaine, Barbara Minerva(the accepted standard one), and Sebastian Ballesteros. Though the Nu52 retconned all but Minerva into being aliases, this whole idea of the story changing may restore this element. Which would probably lead to all the Silver Swans being a thing again.
>>
>>83995149

>>
What exactly is Waller's training/past? Is she some sort of CIA experiment to make the perfect agent out of the DNA of Dick Cheney & Oprah?
>>
>>83995253

i think the streets actually.... she works the system
>>
>>83995240
oh waller
>>
>>83995240
>>
>>83995253
She picked it up as she went. She's from Cabrini-Green, some of the worst handled projects in American history, very deeply ignored by the government. Lost two kids and her husband there, put the pedal to the metal on getting the rest of them out of there, getting herself a political science degree afterwards, which lead to a career in congress, where she stumbled onto the existence of the Suicide Squad.

Field training she picked up as she went. Her main skills are just being fucking smart as hell and incredibly determined. She's not a tech genius, but she's very, very clever.
>>
>>83995253
She comes from the destroyed planet I Don't Have Time For This Shit.
>>
>>83995253
Her career has been primarily white-collar jobs. She did however, grow up in Cabrini Green.
>>
>>83995296
HNNNNNNNNNNNG
>>
>>83995358
An ongoing series of Waller having to do political ins and outs would have been a great, mostly low-key series.
>>
>>83995307

what was her congress job?
>>
>>83995358
>>
>>83995397
She was an aide to a senator, which she got after working a local election. She found out about the previous Suicide Squad, and pitched to Ronnie Reagan - even while trash talking him a little - the idea of bringing it back. She was put in charge of the project.

A very rare meteoric rise for someone so late in her life, but she had the skills that paid the bills.
>>
>>83995397
She was a campaign manager for a congressman.
>>
>>83995426
*mic drop*
>>
>>83995426
Lawton should just have shot him once he started talking.
>>
>>83995358
>President Waller
I'd vote for her.

>>83995393
Yes it would be. Why the hell does such a thing not exist?

I really loved the way the books fleshed out the differences between Eiling and Waller, when their styles on the surface are so similar.

what a goddamn run of comics.

So, how about Raise the Flag starting tomorrow, 8 issues? Thanks for reading, and BUY THESE TRADES IF YOU HAVEN'T and/or buy the digital on Comixology. Show DC that we love this shit.

Thanks for posting as always, Storyteller.

Suicide Squad is great, though I admit to being a bit of a sucker for anti-hero antics. Amanda Waller is the Queen Bitch.

>the most suicidal skwaddies chose to live

>>
>>83995540
You know I think he even undersells that "No" at the end. It's a hugely effective coda to the series, especially as a reflection of the whole squad which we know is coming to an end. It's a peculiar, bitter, upbeat note and that's just perfect for this series.
>>
So who was your favorite character? Other than Waller
>>
>>83993346
I read Cerebus' early barbarian adventures from my brother's collection when I was a kid, then I read some of his 'living in modern suburban America playing street hockey and calling/having his jackass male friends call him a faggot like the tough guys they were' phase when I was in my teens from the local comic shop.

I somehow managed to avoid the entire golden age everyone always recommends AND the worst of his over the top nutjob insanity at the end, too.

I've been kind of hesitant to step in front of that bullet, even if it meant grabbing for the gold, since.
>>
>>83995540
Thanks again OP

It was a good run for sure

I was half expecting Guedhe to not be alive anymore.

"Locked up in a palace, no visitors" is a great way to have a perfect CIA puppet dictator in the form of a corpse.

>>83996311
>Though they also didn’t immediately settle on a big-name hero to turn into the culprit, Bendis kept referring to the doomed hero as Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man.

>And in a perfect world, Bendis is right that killing the black dude if it's the right dramatic choice is a valid story decision.

This is true. Killing a black character should be no bigger deal than killing a white character.

Which really brings up how unnecessary it was to kill ANYONE for Civil War 2, because Civil War 2 is unnecessary.

Are you well known for your obsession with turning urban areas into horrific predatory jungle biomes, though?
>>

I forgot about some of the gold here actually:

>“What if the pressure causes (the hero) to commit suicide,” suggests James Robinson, another Marvel writer, adding that it could be a good way to draw attention to the scourge of cyber-bullying. But editor Tom Brevoort’s Spidey-sense is immediately tingling. “I don’t think you’d want a Marvel Super hero committing suicide,” he interjects.
>>
>>83994980
Wait, why did Suicide Force here not get mindfucked by the jungle?
>>
>>83996030

Still Leah. Even if she'll always be Mindboggler to me.

On the support crew, it's gotta be Sheba and Reverend Craemer.

Have to say it though, I can't think of a single character I dislike, or at least one I'm not entertained by. Even Boomerbutt.
