>>83866507
Yes.
It makes you dumb and bad at spotting mistakes.
Of course, sometimes that can be a good thing, like when you're just beelining through a first draft to get to the end.
I find that my sketches get really free and loose and crazy inspired when I'm tired, too.
But never do anything that needs to be polished and presentable. Only do that when you're properly awake, ideally early in the day.

>>
>>83873584

>>
>>83873915
>I cannot draw more fast
Unless you have some sort of problem moving your arm, that's not true. The time you spent actually drawing the lines on the paper was a tiny fraction of the time you spent looking at the page unsure of what you should do, and that WILL improve with practice, no matter how bad your eyes are.

>>83874048
Time per page depends a lot on how much coloring and other polish you put in it, so its not always useful to compare with other artists - for a pair of relatively simple line art faces, two hours really is a long time. Don't feel depressed though, it's mostly just a matter of practice.
>>
>>83874112

Generally, I don't even bother looking at his pages, but I looked at this one out of curiosity, and like, half the dialogue is unintelligible.

he's mentioned a learning disorder before
where i come from you try to be a bit sensitive about these things and not dwell on it, it's supposed to give you an excuse. as long as you're working on compensating for it.
>>
>>83874545
Well, everyone's different, but I saw huge improvements in my speed when I started my comic. Like, time reduced by half despite my later pages being much more detailed.
>>
>>83874836
I think it's a bullshit learning disorder, like the one I was "diagnosed" with when I was in high school. I just lacked motivation and drive but they tried to tell me it was a disorder and not my fault, which was complete bullshit. They just wanted my family to pay for expensive psychiatry and/or medicine.
>>
>>83874937
that does happen a lot
in any case he's clearly working on it since typos have gone down significantly (until this one). he just appears to have trouble locking the correct spellings in permanently. considering the way typing is stored in the spine it wouldn't surprise me.
>>
>>83874883
Well, I've been drawing since I was a child, but this is my first time doing a comic, to be honest. Let's see how much fast I can become.

Please attempt to draw more on model. I know you're going for a Spumco/John K look, but they still remained on model enough for the character to still be read as that character (i.e. a squashed and stretched Stimpy still reads as being Stimpy.) Neptunia does not look like the same character when viewed from the side - I can't tell if it's a problem with the models themselves or an inability to draw on model, but it's worth examining so your comic will be easier for readers to follow.

he is actually getting a lot better at staying on model (despite those scale issues that i genuinely can't tell if they're intentional or excuses) but when people keep having major changes to their models, losing limbs, changing hairstyles and outfits.. it's not enough.

>both tripfags with horribly drawn comics that look like something you mock on DA
Welp that makes a lot of sense now. Especially as to why he defends this shit so hard. It's a bit noble, like watching one school retard try to stand up for another.
>>
>bothered that there's no single-word plural "you" in common English because there is one in the language the characters are supposed to be speaking
>alternative is having vikings going around saying "youse" or "y'all" or "yinz", which are all either super obscure or associated hard with one specific accent.
I honestly don't know which one I want to go with. It's not like I've been shying away from modern phrases in the past, but I'm sure a lot of reader would instantly imagine everyone with a southern accent.
I guess I could go back to renaissance standards and have it be thou for singular and you for plural. But then I'd feel like I should de-modernize all the rest of the dialogue, too - having "thou" follow modern grammar rules would seem really strange.
Eh. I should probably just stick with multi-word solutions like "you guys".
>>
>>83875927
What about "ye"?
>>
>>83875927
Fuck it, just change the language to Spanish. "Ustedes" and "vosotros" for all!
>>
>>83875927
it is a major blindspot in our language. which i guess is why various slangs fill it in.
i thought like, thee was singular and thou was plural. is that not how it worked? and then that became ye and you, and then we dropped the ye out of confusion with 'the' spelled with a y because for a while that was the sound Y made.. or something.
i think you can get away with 'yous'. without the e at the end it comes off more 'jason mewes' and less '30s gangster'
>>
>>83876016
"Yous" still comes across as heavily regional, though.
>>
>>83876098
eh. a little. it's just a bit low class is all. you cant have someone classy say it. for classier ones you can go with thou but people still won't know it's plural

i just use 'you guys' for this. it's pretty ingrained, to the point i have to stop myself saying 'you guys's'
>>
>>83876168

>>83875978
That's not really used outside of Newfoundland and bits of GB. It's got the regional problem (although it's probably better than "y'all", being less specific)

>>83876009
My Spanish is muy no bueno. I have been considering making a pan-Scandinavian translation, though, with the characters speaking their modern version of wherever they're from to simulate the dialect of Old Norse they'd be using.

>>83876016
Nah, thee and thou was a question of grammar - nominative was thou, accusative was thee (I think). You was always plural, but became singular after addressing someone in the plural became a sign of respect - eventually not doing so was seen as an insult.
"The" got spelled with a Y because the German-made printing presses of the time didn't have the letter þ ("th"), so they'd use Y instead.
"Yous" seems a bit weird to me, since I've never heard it used (or read it used, that I can think of) by anyone except the stereotypical 30's gangsters.

Maybe you could use visuals clues to differentiate between the two?

Like, show all people who are being addressed in the panel and use their expressions and body language to show their reaction to what the speaker is saying, have them look at the speaker, stuff like that.

I considered making various English accents analoguous to places in Scandinavia, with Danes and Swedes (East Norse dialect) being British, Norwegians, Icelanders and other Atlanticans (West Norse dialect) being American, and Gotlanders(who had their own thing) being Aussies, but honestly I'm not that good at English dialects that I'm sure I could make it work. I already mix up American and British spellings and word use all the time.

I checked it out, it's definitely a model issue. Inb4 "squash and stretch" cause in that cause many underlying shapes and features remain consistent. Dewd doesn't care about improving so it really doesn't matter. I know he has certainly improved some but he has gotten very little for his mileage when we know he is capable of getting more.

This comic is based on a game I was making that got rekt due to loosing the data on a laptop, it originally had 3 endings, 2 sorta-bad and 1 good, in order to adapt it to a comic I mish-mashed them all and now the ending I have planned for it is kinda... neutral I guess, that's more or less how I can describe it.

If anything, I'm deliberately rewriting or avoiding certain things in order to not make it edgy.
Which is hard considering some of the hardships at home certain characters had.

Well, I wouldn't say exclusively - these days, a gay Brit wouldn't spend long wondering why you were calling him a cigarette.
It's not as heavily associated with American accents as, say, y'all is with Southern US (well, based on my perception, anyway - if I read the word "y'all" in a text, I immediately add a bit of southern twang).

Like, would the average reader know that "ye" or "youse" means plural you? Plenty of people don't even know that "y'all" is plural and think it's just the Southern version of "you".

Yeah, "you guys", "you people", "you ones" etc are probably what I'm gonna go with. Widely used and self-explanatory. I'm just gonna have to ignore the niggling feeling of using two words where one could be sufficient.
Of course, if I was actually trying to be accurate, I'd also have to come up with some way to insinuate that the characters were using dual pronouns so maybe it's for the best I don't even go into the mouth of the rabbit hole.

Interesting. Spanish came to a similar evolution in some parts of South America. Here in Europe we still use the singular form for 2º single nom. (and 3º single for the polite speech). But the "voseo" is a huge thing over there.

Yeah, using plurals to address a single person seems to have a lot of traction in various languages. I agree that there are a lot of closeups. I think most people seem to let it slide with Miss Melee because the art is generally pretty good, and the characters are generally pretty animated and expressive.

But I think the backgrounds in general can be kind of sparse, so just having more going on from time to time would help remind people what physical location we are in.

Maybe, but I think Miss Melee updates with pretty fair consistency. Seems like the writer is posting at least 2-3 updates a week in these threads.

I think you're looking at this in a weird way.

Doesn't also seem odd for some nobody who has no followers to start asking for money?

Unless you already have some sizable backlog of pages (like, 100) to dump from the get-go, most people;

1.) Have no idea who you are, or your work ethics. People aren't going to start throwing money at you for your 1st, or 10th, or 50th page. They're going to give you money if they see you putting a ton of effort into it.

2.) No idea how long you're going to last. People probably aren't going to throw money at you if you've got a new comic on the scene. So many comics come and go these days. For every 1 comic that actually sticks around past the first...year or so, I'd bet there are 100 more that stop updating after the first 3 pages.

It makes way more sense to have established yourself, have a solid reader base who is familiar with your work, your update schedule, and your ethics regarding your comic. Then, you can come out and say "Hey guys. I've been doing this for a while, and I'd really like to take up to the next level. I've set up a Patreon, and if you support me, I can bring you more updates more quickly, and here's some bonus stuff as incentive to donate a little more."

People are probably more on board with supporting something they already love, and some fuck head nobody looking like he just begging for money out of the gate.

What if you do graphic novels instead of webcomics
They take a really long time and the most you can do is update the progress and maybe release some sketches
>>
>>83882734
Actually I think YOU'RE the one looking at this in a weird way.

That is, you seem to think a comic is either brand new with no fans, or long-running with a fanbase. There are grey areas. The internet is a big place, not every comic that's worked on frequently will have tons of fans, particularly if the author hasn't had time or money to put into advertising yet.

They're cautioning you from throwing your hat in before it's lucrative, as this projects a lack of precision and professionalism in the minds of outsiders. Not to say it IS that, but it makes people less likely to pay.

The point is a certain level of content and popularity should be established first, not that one requires the other.
>>
>>83882163
They're not saying it's shitty, they're saying it's difficult to use it successfully unless you have a decent enough audience that is willing to actually give you money, you fucking turkey.
>>
>>83883338
it's not like it costs you a dime in the meantime though. if there's even a fraction of a chance of it benefitting you before the point when it becomes a good idea, why not make it early and let it sit?
>>
Not that I have personal experience with patreon, but based on what I have seen from others I always got the impression that it doesn't matter that much if you start one right away or do it later. The one thing you really shouldn't do is constantly complain about how nobody is giving money.
>>
>>83882463
Do you have any idea how any of this works? Webcomics connections are what get you an audience for your own shit and what will eventually get you jobs. I made friends with webcomics people despite not having much output, and some of them are friends with mainstream comics industry people. One day I uploaded a comic and it got shared among a lot of my webcomic friends and that's how I got jobs via comic publishers and various websites and anthologies. Because of this, by the time I actually launch a webcomic I'll likely have a sizable follower-base.

Of course, if you set out thinking of everyone as a "connection" and not just being nice and making friends, it probably won't work out for you very well. Be nice and friendly and work a lot on your art and you'll make friends and do well. Probably.
>>
>>83883032

While I wouldn't call the quality of the line work "good", I would say that it is adequate and good enough if the other features of the comic were of good quality.

However, what he's doing with the lines and basic shapes built out of them is not good. He should get rid of that edgy and deformed character design and learn how to draw cartoony characters (and objects) that look life-like and aren't that unpleasent (at least in my opinion) to look at.
>>
>>83883403
This thread doesn't want to think about both sides of the coin. It's like confidence when trying to pick up girls. Not enough of it and you look pathetic. Too much of it and you're an obnoxious tryhard.

I feel like people are focusing on the latter and not the former. If you let your fanbase grow without thinking you or your comic are "good enough" to "deserve" funding, it looks kind of pathetic. And I know I'm not the only one that thinks this.
>>
>>83883479
So I should stop having my lines be pointy and stuff?
>>
>>83883265
It was satire mocking the belief that there are "good" leaders. The ideas expressed in the later half of The Prince, when not taken to the biting extremes he set up, are pretty much the essentials to good law and business strictly BECAUSE others in the field lack scruples and outward appearance matters. Shit, the man himself used those tactics, especially in regards to the militia.

It's almost like a genius of the Renaissance doesn't deal in absolutes and doesn't write books solely to say "DIS IS BAAAAAD". Imagine that.

Not him but: chances are, unless you're completely unknown, you'll get 1-5 people who will pledge. And in that case you have to do whatever you promised, which may require just es much effort for 5 people as it would for hundreds, but without really being worth the effort.
I know some people who had to close their patreon because it ended up being a huge time sink without really making them any money.

I guess the lesson to take away from this is to not promise something that eats up lots of your time unless you already have a large following.

Not that guy but I've been wanting to say something like this to you for a while, it's just that until recently you didn't seem to have the hand-control for it to be worth bothering.
But now that he reminds me, I think it is time for that, yeah. You want to try working with your pressure sensitivity so that lines get thicker at one point of the line and thinner at the ends.
>>83883722
yeah, like this. it makes things all.. sinuous. Of course your art is a mix of wiggly and hard, so by all means make the lines hard and straight when that's warranted. Try to vary the two for mood. Look at the differences in, say, annabeth's hair and angel's.
>>83883755
and yeah the thickness has always been a bit high. buuut for your kind of butch hartmany look that's not too bad, so don't thin them out TOO much.

it's over for you

Anybody else have resources on line weight?
It's something I need to practice on too.

I find it hard to say anything specific about your artwork other than its parts just don't fit together well. I mean there are some obvious bad parts like the face of the girl in panel 4. But the general problem is that almost everywhere something is more or less off. Have you ever tried to redraw several character poses so often that they look really good? Moving everything around until the anatomy looks good, the facial features are neither too close together, nor too far apart...

I'm back after 2 months of doing absolutely nothing, probably not for long this time either.

Anyway, help please. I have no idea what I'm doing and it's kinda important because the next several pages will use the exact same lighting so I need to decide on something before I proceed.

This is an otherwise dark room in the middle of the night and curtains closed, lit up by a somewhat strong, pointed light. A miniature stage light, I guess. How would the lighting work? I think I'm getting closer with each attempt but it still looks like shit and I'm getting discouraged.

Of course middle tones will be smoothed out, I wasn't doing this because it's easier to correct hard defined values like these. At first, I guess at attempt #0 or #-1, I thought I could just get away with simple light on the spot and darkness all around, but of course light will bounce off surfaces and lit up the room at least somewhat, so that was out. It's a moderately sized classroom, 7 x 11 meters (23 x 36 feet).

I'm not trying to make it sound all or nothing, but can't you see how frustrating it might be for an artist who has only a handful of followers to be making like, $8 a month, off of 5 supporters, a year into their comic, or whatever?

Obviously, there's no magic switch, or magic time where all of a sudden, you put up a patreon and suddenly you're making money. I seriously can't even believe I have to explain that.

A lot of people go into the mind set when they set up a patreon that they have dozens, or maybe even a couple hundred followers. So, someone--ANYone--of those will support them. And then they get frustrated when money isn't rolling in.

Frankly, I think a person should explore all avenues of possible income. Personally, I'd rather be sitting at a table at a convention selling books for $10 a piece where I can directly interact with people, and whatnot and sort of have fun with it, than rely on the "maybe-kinda-sorta today will be the day my first Patreon sends me a dollar."

I guess in the end, I'm just saying people really shouldn't expect anything from Patreon for (likely) years until they really get going, and have an established rhythm, schedule, fanbase, etc.

Setting up a Patreon and then begging for money when you have nothing, or little to show comes off as seeming like some sort of desperation gambit to almost everyone that I've ever seen talk about how you should handle a Patreon for webcomics.

#4 should have "strongest light" in the description of course + it's only lighting for the floor, I'll change it for all other surfaces (walls, desk, character etc.) accordingly.

1)Switch to your other hand when not drawing
2)I'm going to sound insane here BUT TRUST ME a lot of the time wrist pain/RSI has a stress based component to it. I suggest taking a break and not worrying. You WILL get better.

it'd be 8 dollars less frustrating a month than if they had no patreon at all.

The cone of light becomes brighter towards the light source.
>>
>>83884241
I don't think there'd be a cone of light honestly. I tried it out with a (giving weaker light) desk lamp in a (smaller) room and of course there was no cone of light. I think that's because the background, i.e. the room walls, furniture etc. are visible as the bounced light reaches them. On a big open stage with a much stronger light source, like in your image, things work different, I think. I've been browsing Google for something similar to what I'm trying to do but so far with no luck. Maybe I'm using wrong searching terms, ha ha.

No thanks.
>>
>>83884722
it's easier if you do that in the sketch stage. that way you can make little modifications like select one side of a limb and slide it around so it gets thinner or fatter, shit like that. then you just trace lineart over it. it seems like a lot of work but it's worth it, it saves you time in the long run
>>83884776
you don't have to report it until you start making more than like 6 grand. (though when you do, it's insane ass)
last year i made 8 grand and was fucked. not on patreon but on self employment
>>
>>83884868
Yeah. I can try that for a while and see how it goes.
