What's the verdict on this? Do people like it? This is the only X-men cartoon I watched as a kid, and as far as I remember it was pretty exciting.
>>
>>83801598
I liked it. It was my first piece of X-Men media I was exposed to as a kid. Was pretty comfy watching this with Batman Beyond and Static Shock on Kids WB.
>>
>>83801598
twas okay. it did a lot of shit right, had a good budget and art direction (mostly. clawless beast was a huge mistake and there was a lot of inappropriate sameface. plus pocky looked terribad), but it was also reallly dumbed down for kids, sanitized away from the usual healthy x-men level of drama, and occasionally delved into early-90s-tier teenage shinoligans.
It's funny how we've never had a perfect x-men movie, they all have some pretty clear flaw... but we've never had a BAD x-men tv show, even Pryde looked watchable.
>>
Was it always this blurry?
>>
>>83802570

There aren't any good resolution uploads.

>>83801598

I liked it. Had a larger cast and didn't always have some post apocalyptic future shit guaranteed to fucking haunt them all the time like in the 90s cartoon. They left some room for optimism.
>>
>>83802683
in fact it had a neat flashforward to their version of the future, at the end.
though i think it was maybe a little too upbeat.
and the larger cast was great, even spyke wasn't bad... well, not very. and he got better later.
buuuut toad and havok were fucking LOADS in my opinion. they dragged down every scene they were in.
>>
>>83801598
Marrow was one of my faves when that came out. So I was not very happy with Spike.
First seasons were garbage. It got better when they added some new characters.
I still giggle when I think about the Rogue and petrified Mystique scene. Wish that could happen in the comics.

>>
It was a pretty good show but their civilian clothes really annoyed me for some reason, especially the boys' very visible underwear. Idk why I cared so much but I did.
>>
>>83803056
i dont recall them being ghetto penguins.. in fact i remember everyone wearing really long shirts. are you sure?
>>
>>83803193
Reasonably, though god knows what's going on in this outfit.
>>
>>83803890
oh yeaahhh.. i dont think that's sagging pants so much as underwear pulled up high. that IS weird now that you point it out.
i did appreciate though how they made sure his fingers always stayed together because the hologram generator is trying to stick as closely as possible to 'what you see is what you can touch'
and presumably those baggy-cuffed pants help with that somewhat.. even if that probably wouldn't quite work because he'd be kneeing people with invisible knees

also fucking loved his hair. everyone in this show had pretty nice hair. nice arched banged mullets, which i love.
>>
>>83802308
This.
>>
>>83802904
Rogue did kill Mystique in Messiah Complex.
Then Mystique just sort of showed up again later, because why the fuck not.

I loved this show as a kid. I remember long ago when I had to watch episodes uploaded on Myspace Video in piss-poor quality. Now it's so much easier to watch.
>>
If Nightcrawler was meant to be German why did he look Chinese?
>>
>>83804591
you've been looking at some weird chinamen
not that he looks german at all, that's a fair point.
not that he did originally either. he's supposed to have slightly 'demonic' features, with a very roman/english downward-pointed nose.. basically that scottish homo that played him in the movies was perfect, facially. such a shame they fucked everything up they possibly could fuck up with him.
calypsy on the other hand they made look authentically egyptian, with an aquiline nose, which is a problem because he's meant to look black, with a flat nose.
>>
>>83801598
Pretty good.
>>
It was pretty alright. I like a lot of it, and didn't like a lot of it too, but I appreciate a new take on x-men.

I wish Wanda didnt cut her hair, that was so stupid. She was literally perfect.
>>
>>83804999
it did enhance her "i am actually criminally insane and need therapy" character aspect
>>
>>83801598
I liked it growing up, but to be fair I never liked X-Men comics. I remember thinking the big bad, minus Apocalypse, were lame though.

it is really screwed up how the x-men would look down on people like rogue for wanting a cure or at least a suppressor collar.
i liked that 90s spider-man episode where he meets them and is justifiably pissed that chuck won't even talk about helping him with his mutagenic spider bite problem just because of his stupid mutant acceptance philosophy

These guys were the best part of the show
>>
>>83806085
x-23 was a neat idea but even if you can forgive the 'claws dont match' aspect, because they hadnt yet introduced the stupid bone claws retcon, why the fuck did they make her brown with brown hair (which isnt a thing) and eyes when he's white with blue hair and blue eyes?
>>
>>83806952
>brown with brown hair (which isnt a thing)
wat

I just assumed she looked different and had two claws on her hands with one on each foot because instead of a perfect 1:1 clone of Wolverine except a girl they just made some additional modifications to her DNA.
>>
>>83807097
you cant have brown skin (or uncreased eyelids, unrelatedly) and have any hair color but black. it's not even an issue of linked genes, it's a chemical production thing.
>>
>>83807097
anyway, modifications would be one thing (nevermind the drastically different issues of having claws housed in your foot and your forearm), but they explicitly said she is a 1:1 clone
or rather, half of his DNA duplicated back onto itself, hence XX
>>
>>83807191
I'm no expert on DNA but I think that if I can accept cloning using only half the DNA then I can accept delicious brown
>>
>>83807239
yeah it's not any more outlandish. i'm not saying you couldn't (though.. you couldn't), i'm just saying they said in the show that they didn't, so there was a disconnect between the writing and the art. which happens sometimes.
>>
also hell yeah she was a hot delicious brown and it looked goood on her. and it suited her feral nature
>>
>>83801598
It was pretty good as a new take on the X-Men. The first cartoon series had taken the Claremont approach as far as it could go.

The versions of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch have clearly influenced the movies (Fox's Quicksilver is closer to the Evolution version, and MCU Scarlet Witch has a similar look). And Morrison was impressed enough with their Rogue that he advocated making the comics version more like her, but didn't get to use her.
>>
>>83807864
>MCU Scarlet Witch has a similar look
She looks like what a Disney Channel sitcom would dress a teenage girl who shops at Hot Topic.
>>
>>83807993
yeah i found that to be a sensible update, if you were going to make her a teenager that's how she'd be
>>
>>83801598

Rogue was fucking hot in this one. Also, it had the most likeable depiction of Cyclops. They really should've hooked up.
>>
>>83801598
It had worst Rogue, so it was shit.
>>
Why'd they attend a regular school in this?
>>
>>83808031
My problem is that her and Quicksilver don't even look like comic book characters. There's no real sense of style or flamboyance. Pietro is literally just wearing an underarmor shirt.
>>
>>83808208
havent seen that movie yet, he looks fucking terrible. looks like a goddamn homo. but they did choose the right actor, they just didnt style his hair right
>>
>>83808201
Mutants were a secret at the beginning of the series, and the goal was to help them feel normal and blend in with regular humans instead of just being holed up in the mansion and never really interacting with anyone
>>
>>83808248
which pretty much defeats the purpose. it shows the difference between good 60s comics and cruddy 00s cartoons.. in terms of the executives behind them. 00s execs thought kids wanted to see people go to school. sadly a lot of the really fucked up faggy kids actually did, and as a result enjoyed harry potter
>>
>>83807097

Hm, not sure what the logic was to be honest, and it got cancelled before she got more than a few episodes. Enough for her to 'break out' though.

I liked that in the comics, she is as much a daughter as a clone, based on his DNA, but carried and receiving the genetics (and looks) of her mother too. Not that they have ever stopped referring to her as a clone, which is pretty much intrue. Logan was just the DNA doner.
>>
>>83808379
I can understand not liking the high school drama, but you'd have to have pretty shit taste to not appreciate the story arc of mutantkind becoming public and how the town reacted to them.
>>
>>83808502
i dont even remember it, it made no impact on me. then again it's been 15-ass years. refresh me?
>>83808463
oh i didnt know that. in fact i knew something specifically in contrast to that. i'd be surprised, but.. comics. retcons are their specialty. so she's basically like superboy now?
>>
>>83808379
>which pretty much defeats the purpose.
How so? From the very beginning the problem is that they know they won't be able to keep it a secret forever, and the question is how they're going to reveal themselves to mankind. Xavier's aware of how carefully this needs to be done.

Cue Magneto doing it for them in such a way that it scares the crap out of people.
>>
>>83808560
Magneto manipulates both the X-Men and Trask, resulting in them having to fight a Sentinel in New York. News cameras start following them and the public's first look at mutants is a bunch of superpowered freaks fighting a giant robot and causing massive property damage. Fear and paranoia takes over.

Not sure how you could forget this if you say you watched the series.
>>
>>83808584
actually you just did an even better example of showing why it was a bad idea.
I just meant the point of x-men (and all cape comics) is to appeal to freaks, outcasts, misfits.. people who would LOVE to have their own private school only for other freaks who at least have the ability to understand you, people who fucking despise public school and its tortures.
>>
>>83808379
>00s execs thought kids wanted to see people go to school
School stuff takes up a very small portion of the show, though.
>>
>>83808645
yeah i remembered that episode. i meant the part you said about a 'story arc'.
after that episode i don't remember anything major happening with that storyline.. nothing major about their acceptance or anything. except a town meeting that got manipulated by magneto
>>83808667
mercifully. but you KNOW it was insisted upon by an exec
>>
>>83808665
>I just meant the point of x-men (and all cape comics) is to appeal to freaks, outcasts, misfits.. people who would LOVE to have their own private school only for other freaks who at least have the ability to understand you, people who fucking despise public school and its tortures.
How did I provide an example of this? I just told you the show does the exact opposite of this. None of the main characters want to have a special club for themselves. The show actively avoids this. Most of them frequently express how tired they are of having to hide.

Seriously, do you even know what you're arguing anymore?
>>
>>83808690
>nothing major about their acceptance or anything
That's because they never gain wide acceptance. Some people start realizing that not all mutants are bad, but by and large they're still feared and mistrusted. You know, like how it is in pretty much every X-Men adaptation.

am i speaking portuguese today?
I said "going to school defeats the purpose of x-men being outcasts"
you said "how so? their problem is they can't keep it a secret forever and want to do it carefully"
i replied "which makes going to school even MORE of a bad idea"
>>
>>83808560
It's been a year or two since I've watched it, but
>the students get harassed at school Little Rock Nine style
>lots of "MUTIES GO HOME" type graffitti
>Jean gets her Valedictorian status and soccer trophies revoked
>People basically start doing lynch mobs
>Spyke and the Morlocks become vigilantes to combat these lynch mobs
>The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants start acting like big dogs because now people are scared of them
>Tension between Nightcrawler and the others because he chooses to keep his identity a secret (no one knew he was a mutant because the big reveal only showed his normal, blue self instead of the wristwatch disguise)
>The Bayville High debates banning all mutants from attending

It had a ton of parallels to the Civil Rights Movement, especially the parts concerning desegregation.
>>
>>83808753
exactly. so "appreciating the story arc of how the town reacted to mutants going public" doesn't really jive with that. because it didn't happen, and it wasn't a story arc about it.
>>83808778
we're talking about a comic and a cartoon and the mindset of kids who watch them. try to keep up
>>
>>83808782
>going to school defeats the purpose of x-men being outcasts
They become outcasts once their secret is revealed. You're seriously not reading what I'm typing, dude.
>>
>>83808818
>because it didn't happen
A story about how the public reacted to mutants didn't happen? What the fuck are you even talking about? It's like you're actively ignoring what we're telling you.
>>
>>83808795
ahhh okay now that's coming back to me. though i remember that being, like, two episodes. but i bet i'm wrong and it was a whole arc
>>83808828
that's... okay, i think you're giving them a lot of credit, because i don't see that being their intent. that's kinda weird. giving them a more normal life so it can come crashing down and MAKE them into what, in the comics, they were to begin with? i mean feel free to disagree, but the show did not feel that intelligent.
>>
>>83808818
>exactly. so "appreciating the story arc of how the town reacted to mutants going public" doesn't really jive with that. because it didn't happen, and it wasn't a story arc about it.

You'd have a point if this was what the X-Men had planned. Having humans hate and fear them was what they wanted to avoid, Xavier wanted them to introduce themselves as friends. Magneto's the one who fucked it up.

The best X-Men TV series despite the weak first season.

90's X-Men has aged poorly and Wolverine and the X-Men never really got a chance to do much of anything. Evolution had some really nice character designs and animation and whilst the writing got better as it went along it also did some neat things with established characters. Overall its solid and its a shame Marvel wants to bury the X-Men nowadays as FOX continues to fuck it up.
