Rebirth hasn't significantly changed DC's market share, though, which is the critical problem here.

It means that they're just hurting their own titles, so unless they've cut the number of titles overall, they're not actually doing better, they're doing worse - drawing readers away from regular titles to an event book. Ultimately they'll still be able to keep those regulars going with the money from the event title, but it's not a good sign at all.
>>
>>83743720

I'd give it until June's numbers come out, since this is the first month with actual Rebirth books. The "Rebirth" special was released at the tail end of May and is why it's on the list.

>>83743776
I really wonder how Rebirthed #1 issues will compare to regular #1 DC is putting out.
>>
>>83743730
Rebirth itself will obviously be a success with things like the Green Arrow one shot selling 90k+ and getting reprints. The only question is how long that will last. Can't really draw conclusions for like another year or so and you certainly can't look at market share in one month and make assumptions when it's obviously why exactly the other books' sales have dropped (it's mostly ending arcs for DCYou books and filler issues for the others while everyone is waiting for Rebirth to start).
>>
>>83743730
I think you're not realizing majority of those who bought Rebirth were lapsed and new readers who wouldn't have been buying those titles in the first place. And if you looked that the # of titles for Rebirth once all the books have properly relaunched, it's not even that much. From what I see, only Earth 2, Gotham Academy, and Dr Fate would be continuing Post-Rebirth as non-related titles.
>>
>>83743682
I've hated Hopeless' run on All-New but his Apocalypse Wars has actually been fun.

It's been Hank and Evan's Wild Adventure, My Own Twin edition.

Those sorts of A-List titles were in the 35-40k range for DC before Rebirth was announced and creative teams got shuffled around to prepare for it.

It doesn't reall matter what Rebirth does for the first several months. It is not indicative of anything besides speculators hoarding #1s and reader curiousity. When New 52 dropped DC had equal market share with Marvel for awhile.
>>
I've never really understood how this works.

So, orders are made like 2-3 months in advance, right? And this list is basically just those initial numbers? Or do orders that come a little later get added in (say, a month to a just a few weeks in advance)?

Because, while it seems that pre-order numbers will make sense for the large majority of titles, it kind of fails for the situation we're seeing with Rebirth. A *lot* of Rebirth titles (including the special) sold out and keep selling out, which makes those initial figures a bit incorrect.

Also worth noting is that shops likely under-ordered the second/third issues of Rebirth biweeklies, and it's very possible/likely those are going to sell out *again*, except at much lower numbers. So, even though it's more-or-less confirmed that GA Rebirth sold like 90k, we might see GA #2 or #3 sell about 60k, which would initially imply dropping sales...except each and every one of those books is being bought and, thus, the shops fucked up their pre-orders.

And again, my knowledge of how this all works -- Diamond pre-orders, sales charts, etc. -- is severely limited. But is what I'm saying correct?

>>
>>83743923
I think you generally have the idea. Though orders can be adjusted like 3 weeks before release. And they can backorder stuff too, I've seen issues show up again in the second month of release but it's rare.

But yeah, you'll have to wait and see the true health of things.
>>

>they sell well digitally.
How well though. Most titles don't even seel half the print run digitally
>>
>>83743484
No they don't. Squirrel Girl sells great in trades though so its not going anywhere.

Hellcat has neither trade sales (since the first trade isn't even out yet to judge) nor enough digital sales to offset the poor floppie sales.

It's going to be on the chopping block post-CWII.

Squirrel Girl is here to stay though.
>>
>Comics retailers in North America ordered nearly 236,000 copies of DC Universe Rebirth #1 in May 2016, according to Comichron's analysis of data released by Diamond Comic Distributors. The figure, certain to increase with figures from later months, gave the $2.99 issue the top slot in the charts for May — but more money was earned by the second-place finisher: Marvel's $4.99 Civil War II #0, with orders of more than 177,000 copies. Click to see the sales estimates for comics ordered in May 2016.

>Four comic books posted sales of more than 100,000 copies, down from 10 last year — confirming our Friday view that most of the difference between this May's and last May's performance comes from a lack of blockbusters. Last year had the launch of Secret Wars with over half a million copies sold of #1 and more than 200,000 copies sold of #2 — and the charts also included the last of the Loot Crate-charged titles, Bravest Warriors: Tales from the Holo John #1, which added half a million comics to the unit sales totals. There was also Convergence in the mix back then.

>May 2016's top-sellers simply didn't have the same high volumes. In total, the Top 300 comics sold 6.37 million copies in the month, down 20% from almost exactly 8 million last May — but really, that should be down 15% from 7.5 million, since the Loot Crate copies were never part of the Direct Market. That leaves a deficit of 1.13 million copies, which is almost entirely explained by softer sales in the Top 100.

>On the other hand, all comics in 140th through 300th places outsold those in the corresponding rankings on the list from last year; this month's 300th place title sold 4,986 copies, which is a very respectable number.
>>
>>83744119

>So why are the midlist and low-end entries doing better? One reason is that they're more likely to be Marvel titles this year as opposed to last year. Marvel placed 102 titles in the Top 300 this May; last May, there were only 81. There are fewer comics coming from the middle-tier publishers this year, so if Marvel is taking those spots on the list, its generally higher volumes would have an impact. To be clear, we're describing the relative performance of titles at the same rank on the charts, not the performance of specific ongoing titles over time. But it is another example of the shape of the comics sales chart evolving. Depth continues, even if the bestsellers aren't reaching the same heights.

Wow, that's fucking lame. Hype made it seem like it was going to do 300k at least. This is going to get beaten by inflated Civil War #1 and Already beaten by Ta Nigger Coates' Black Panther. >>
>>83746026
I can see them shuffling writers around until Spencer gets put in charge of a bigger book.
Ant-man is selling at cancellation level and only the movie made him sell a lot.
They don't have Hickman or Remender anymore and it sounds like Hickman isn't done with his break from the big two.

I hope it means they're getting some new fresh writers instead of having the same 5 guys on 20 books.

I don't know why everyone is always hoping that DC'll overtake Marvel's sales any time in the foreseeable future, it ain't happening. I read only DC comics, but obviously Marvel's grasp on the market is way too firm. All I want is for DC to make good comics and get some love from the buyers for it. I'm happy Rebirth did so well and I hope they'll keep the new and lapsed readers, though I wish DCYou had seen a bit more love.

I meant Gotham Academy, actually.

Hope Ollie does well too, though.

He only has himself to blame for that considering Johns set up three Jokers as the Rebirth Batman plotline and instead he's doing some OC thing.

I'd rather read OCs than more of the goddamned Joker

This. Don't say "three Jokers" like it's a good thing.

I like two of the three Jokers though.

Joker is DC's most popular villain for similar reasons as to why Batman is DC's most popular hero.

To be fair to Venditti, he came after Johns' 9 year run that was responsible for putting GL back on the map. He was fucked before he even came on and his first story being the emotional reservoir shit killed what people remained. I enjoyed his Earth issues and I think if he had someone on the book with him he could do well.

That doesn't mean Joker should be the villain in all Batman stories

Deadshot/Katana is failing because its $4.99 for a miniseries about two C listers who only have success on team books

I agree, however Johns set up a Joker plot in what is by far the highest selling book DC's had in a long time and people are going to be irate when there's no immediate follow-up in any of the Bat-books.

Green Lantern could be pretty easy considering how stupid a lot of his Silver Age stuff was. He'd regularly get pulled into the 58th Century, have his memory wiped to be Pol Manning and beat the shit out of aliens. I'm sure Adams could think of something ridiculous from that.

I think if he hadn't immediately set to differentiate himself from Johns so hard people wouldn't have disliked his work so much overall

I liked his Earth issues too which is why HJGLC being set entirely in space is a little disappointing and I have my doubts that he can do justice to five leads when he wasn't doing so hot with one before
