WIP
Working on my first few pages now. I've been planning and writing it carefully for a while and believe I have it all well put together.

First time doing all drawing, inking, and coloring in my comics. Hope to have this and my other pages done in a few days if I have enough energy after work.

Taking a break from my occult detective comic to freshen up my mind. In the meanwhile (which may turn out to be quite a LONG while), I've turned my focus on another idea I've had in mind for couple years already.

The working title's ''OUTRAGEOUS''. It's about a group of shameless internet content creators who're willing to do absolutely anything for views, money and fame. There's no line they wouldn't cross nor a boundary they couldn't break. If there's money to be made, they are already there.

I'm really excited to write this one and to really explore the morality of these people, and my own on the side. Also, diving into the fakeness of our ''media reality'' has been awesome so far. I'm not trying to demonize the media, btw-- No, I embrace it through my characters. It's a gold mine for them, so there's no time for them to get ethical about it. I leave the ethics to the reader.

It's a one twisted show, I tell you that. And the characters are the kind you love to hate, unless you're easily offended.. then you'll probably JUST hate them, period. It's a dark noir-ish comedy/ drama, that also pretends to be a little like a documentary from behind the scenes of the content creating business.

Give them an opinion or base them on someone cool. Craig would be boring as fuck if he wasn't blatant Zak Bagans. He'd just be another romantic partner getting pushed aside for powers type character; likely meant to have as boring a speech as anyone whose fucked a cape on a CW show. But he's Zak Bagansy instead, so he's not like that.

Give him something to play off too. Dan and Craig play off one another despite being radically different sorts of people; so when Dan is casting disparaging remarks at Craig, Craig is asking why Dan didn't wear the T-Shirt he made him. Just two friends bashing on one another like friends do.

It isn't hard to make someone interesting. Just find that dynamic that they shine in. A fisherman might seem boring as fuck to you, but if you get him drunk and he starts talking about having once slept with a girl back in the war and he starts cracking jokes about it; suddenly he's not just some fisherman while still being a guy who fits in a sailor archetype. Flesh things out without making it feel like there's an intimidating amount of depth.

These people exist within the world for people within the world, based on interactions with people in the world. Think like that and it gets a bit easier because it is less about writing someone who appeals to audiences and more about writing friends properly.

>>83642402
That's a chill little video.

As an art form it is low barrier to entry and over saturated, but so are most fields. Judge them by the best and ignore the worst. People don't consider Sonic OC Fanfic when they're talking about Steinbeck.
>>
>>83648290
Nah, no one ''NEEDS'' to hear this. I'm not taking some grand stand with this thing. It's a story about the cruelness and ballsiness of the main characters rather than the horrors of the media and society.

I really dig the style of your comic. The slightly muted colors really help bring it down to earth too.

Correct me if I'm wrong but are you just hosting your comic on tumblr? Is it worth creating a website to host a webcomic or does anyone know if you should just stick to a webcomic hosting site?

This is for Carrion Girls guy.

I had a dream where Skeggold had to combine her warrior skills with magic in a frightening and monstrous way to fight a robotic magic-hunting robot from the future. She was calling out instructions on what to do if things started going south to some girl who was not Skalmold but I believe an original character do not steal copyright my subconscious, as she headed off to fight, but then my roommate's dumb fucking dog started howling and woke me up just as it was starting to get good. I went back and remade the old pages a few years ago. I know that's frowned upon since people tend to enjoy seeing artistic progression but it was REALLY bad. (I compromised by having a downloadable rar of the old pages available.)

Pic related is the true 2008 artwork.

there's gotta be a way.

so many real people i've met would be completely flat if you had to tell a story where they're the primary focus. nonetheless their life story as a whole, and how perfectly it fits into telling a story about the nature of our world could quite possibly be interesting.

Well, all the stuff I can find about depilatories in the rest of Europe seems to be from way after the viking age, and from what I can tell, while it was common in art (inspired by the Classical ideal?), its spread throughout the actual populace was much smaller (and it might have been considered shameful and low class because of its association with prostitutes, who shaved to avoid stuff like pubic lice).

Being a dark age culture, there's very little to say that the Norse didn't remove their body hair, but there's even less to say that they did. If they did so commonly, I'd expect razors to have been a common grave good for women, much like ear spoons and combs, but I'm pretty sure that isn't the case. I guess they could have used tweezers, but given the impracticality of doing so and how women wore clothing that covered up everything from the neck down so nobody would ever see anyway, I think it's more likely that the Norse just didn't care very much about hairlessness below the neck.

Page 5 pencils/roughs.
Highly likely to revise some of the dialogue; any suggestions for improvements will be appreciated.

Low energy this week, so behind schedule. Last weekend was disrupted with exhibiting at a local anime con, and pre- and post-convention preparation and recovery. (Covered costs, but sales on Sunday were practically non-existent.)

Also my Wacom pen is acting up, so I've had to spend a chunk of time fighting it to get it to behave. The primary nib has come down with a case of the flickering right-clicks; I can configure it to draw with the eraser end if necessary, but still, no need.

I don't have any great objections to the dialogue, but I feel like the final panels are a bit weak. Tried doodling in what I'd do differently (couldn't express it well in writing), hope you can use it.

I tried. I did. I really ought to try again when I have a computer that isn't almost a decade old. I used to be really tech-savvy circa 2009. It is a skill I really need to get good at again, which is something I will attempt to revitalize once I can afford to build a new computer.

>Where'd you last leave off and how'd you like the end of the first arc, if I can ask?

Last I had read it was at the end of The Lies, right as Erin and "Connor" were about to get it on. As far as what I thought; I'm not overstating when I say I think it's the best comic in these threads (My favorite is Carrion Girls, but I'm looking at it from the perspective of someone who's perhaps not as into mythology and history as I am). As a first story arc, it really comes across something written and drawn by professionals. The top-notch character design already sets it apart, but your dialogues are so natural I could easily see this adapted into a TV drama.
Overall, the whole thing is just excellently paced: In the first three-or-so chapter, nicely start off as what fells was going to be "three magic sisters deal with the monster of the week", but from the point where Conard is revealed and onwards, things slowly start breaking down for the main character until the climax in the Truth. It feels like the sisters bit off a small piece of something MUCH bigger and I'm quite eagerly anticipating the next arc.

I know I sound like I'm fanboy-ing, but I do think your comic (along with Carrion Girls and Miss Melee to an extent) stand above the rest. What's perhaps more subconcious is that it does come across like you and your artist have a great dynamic together. You can somehow feel when the artist and the writer works rather distant from the writer, while here I don't feel that disconnect. Does your artist have a lot of input in the story, out of curiosity?
>>
>>83667836
I feel like your current chapter has suffered from pacing problems, like there wasn't enough time between when they got their fish forms and when they started to save the boy.

Yeah, I hear ya; looking back I was trying to have too many things happen in JUST 18 pages which I think really came down to me combining two common merrow stories into one (the merrow that escapes into the human world because all the merrow men look like monsters, and the merrows who capture human souls and leave them in cages).
And I think just adding 1 extra underwater page would have made a great deal of difference; but alas, I'll try to avoid similar problems in the next chapters

> Does your artist have a lot of input in the story, out of curiosity?
Tons. I clear everything with him because ultimately this is our story and he gets to suggest the changes to the drafts and ultimately he handles paneling/framing. But we've been friends for seven-ish years now, so we get one another.

We bicker like an old married couple all the time. It is that sort of relationship.

But thank you for your statements, that sort of feedback helps.

>>

Laika? Yeah, I guess I could see that, Paranorman style. Always thought "Carrion Girls the Movie" should be a 3D thing because I love high frame rates and you'd be able to cheat more than you could with stop motion.
>>
>>83668702
I always imagined Carrion Girls the movie as one of those sorta-janky but with artistic charm Eastern European-style animated 2d movies.
>>
>>83668806
Well, I don't know much about eastern European stuff. I guess I just don't see how the style would translate well to 2D animation unless you assembled a team of digital painters who've lost their minds to do something like The Old Man And The Sea but digitally.

The layout for panel 8's much better, with the heaps of manticorpses, and the "I stopped counting" line - thanks.

I'll keep panel 7 the same, as panel 1 is a call back to the previous page, and 7 is the reversal of that. Alternative caption: "One manticore genocide later..."

>>83666374
For story purposes, I need to show the quest completion, as that wraps up that sub-section.

At this point, I've got a final 2 page quest, with 1 page leading up to it, and a 2 page wrap up written. Due to the story structure, it would be fairly simple to just keep inserting quests, but then it'd look odd on the website to see the end of the TPoPPPC story on page 10, then see pages TPoPPPC 5.5a and 5.5b after that. But then the print collections have a different running order than the chronologically published website...

>>83668294
No reason you couldn't insert an extra page if (when) you make a collected edition.

>>83667155
Comic text generally uses only bold or italic for emphasis; it's never underlined.
Plan your lettering at the pencils/layout stage, so you can keep your font sizes consistent; it looks like you have some idea of what's going to be said, but then you try and force the text into the space that's available after inking, rather than making sure there's enough room to begin with. Also, while most of the lettering is anti-aliased, some of it isn't, as with Todd's first appearance.
Looks like you're using a soft edged brush in photoshop for the linework, which is making everything grey and hazy. A hard edged brush would be better.

If you're gonna keep panel 7 the same, I'd consider adding a panel between 7 and 8 for the "Quest complete!" box and their reaction to it. Having it separate from the reveal of just how many manticores had to die is a much better comedic rhythm, IMO.

Also, in panel 1, I think it might be a good idea to split up the caption so it's
>"We set out to find more manticores"
>image of attacking manticore
>"But mostly they found us."
Having the entire caption up front kind of spoils the joke.

As far as looks and choreography go, this is awesome.

My only nitpick is the transition between panel three and four. In panel four, the guy looks like he was simply pushed back by something as opposed to having JUST been punched really fucking hard by some muscly rock man thing. Based on the way his body is sent flying in panel 3, he ought to look like he's going to land on his side or stomach.

Ok m8, I'll be honest with you. A couple things: update your website layout for christ sakes. Hire somebody if you have to, cause this shit looks like it was made in the 90's.

I only skimmed some of your stuff because the artwork really turned me off, so I can't critique your writing. I just wasn't interested.

As far the as lineart goes it's passable, there are certainly worse examples on the internet that are more popular. Even if It works, you should still strive to improve; if you haven't already, go to /ic/ and read the sticky.

Your coloring is the worst offender however, it's atrocious. There's barely any color harmony going on in your pages. Worst of all, you don't add shading to the characters. If you're going to take anything from this post, I'd say that is the most important thing. Most of your backgrounds are dark, but there's no proper lighting/shading to reflect that, so your characters stick out in the worst way. You will most certainly find a wealth of info on this subject in the /ic/ sticky.

That's about all I'd say is objectively wrong with it, the rest is up to personal tastes. Study, practice, always try your best. Good luck, anon, I believe in you

The balloon for "You missed..." isn't quite making a tangent with the panel border, but it's pretty close.
There's a line that naturally guides the eye through panel 5, going from MM's eyes and through the upper arm and middle brick work. The end of that would be a good place to move the balloon in panel 6.

>>
>>83687773
Well, your depression isn't ever really gone, so it might be better to think of it as "getting started dealing with your depression while publishing" or "think you're ok and start publishing then have it pop up in the middle of your schedule and dealing with it for the first time" then
>>
>>83682979
The only thing I'd change is the last panel. As a reader, I'm inclined to read her dialogue first, then her expression, THEN back to Jackie's exclamation. I'd suggest moving Jackie's dialogue to directly above her mom's head, it'll definitely flow better and it makes sense, since it'll convey how she's looking towards Jackie at the same time she hears her.

This panel is kind of tight, so moving the dialogue will be tricky, maybe you'll want to move the pov back a bit to give it room.
>>
>>83687773
If it's situational then you could wait. If you have chronic depression and/or mental illness I wouldn't. I've had my first OCD relapse in three years and I've had to come to terms with the fact that what I am living with is chronic and not something I can grow out of but rather live with and be prepared for. Good luck.
>>
>>83682979
Why would MM be surprised that her daughter, who she knows is in the car, is shouting her name? It seems more like that's something she'd actively try to ignore while she's in the zone. And the reaction she's giving doesn't really telegraph the idea that the girl is in trouble, so if that's the reveal you're going for it doesn't work here.

Also in the 3rd panel; the KRASHH panel, the boom going on doesn't seem to be large enough given how the guy is positioned and the distance from the wall/window he was just thrown out of.

What's the best way to learn how to draw? I've tried all the "how to draw" and anatomy books and Andrew Loomis but they're all for people with a skillset above mine. I can't even draw emotive stick figures.

Should I just accept that it's one of those skills I'll never have?
>>
>>83690281
How to draw books generally assume that you want to learn how to draw properly because you're already enjoying it.
If you're really just starting out, the best thing is to just draw a lot, so draw whatever you enjoy drawing and don't worry too much about the quality. Once you have some basic experience you can take it more seriously with books etc.
>>
>>83690518
The problem is that my interest isn't actually in illustration, but storytelling with sequential images.
I write. I can draft panels, sequences, perspectives, camera and text placement. Actually drawing something that doesn't look like shit is the only bit I'm missing, and I don't enjoy doing it.

If you can handle perspective and the like then that doesn't sound like you're actually below the level for most how to draw books.
What are you struggeling with? Do your drawings not look as good as the examples? That's pretty normal. Or do you have trouble understanding what the author is trying to teach you?
>>
>>83691081
yeah i know. if they want to utilize those other skills while learning how to draw, using models to practice may help.

I dunno, I think that was supposed to be the point. That Janice did not prepare for this situation. From Janice's point of view, Jackie probably became a teenage fangirl overnight -- you know, how parents forget sometimes how fast kids grow and miss obvious things. I think the scene where she wakes Jackie for school seems to imply that Jackie's interest with Miss Melee is relatively new, and Janice had not noticed it. Perhaps she really didn't realize Jackie will not stay in the car like she was supposed to, when she sees her idol kicking ass in the parking lot. Perhaps Janice thought she could just deal with the robbers unnoticed, like an addict thinks: one more shot before the grocery store.

Clearly she hasn't met her family as Miss Melee personally before, and perhaps she thought it would stay that way -- until Jackie became obsessed with superheroes.

Well, only the creators know for sure, but that's the way I see it.

STUPID PATHETIC FUCKING FEELS POSTER!!! I HATE YOU SO MUCH!!!

Every time I see one of these sad sack posts I go into turbo butt mad. I had enough of hearing this sad whiny shit in school, it fucking triggers me to no end. The sheer amounts of fucking whiny shits with no work ethic or drive who I see crying about shit like this day in and day out makes me want to set myself on fire.

But I won't, I'm gonna channel this rage into working on thumbnails like a fucking sane human and stop screaming on the internet about spammy shitposts

>>

Not just in the thread, I mean in my life in general. Some artists shut the fuck up and have crazy amounts of output and make tons of work, others cry and whine about how bad their art is and how they'll never get a job as the head of a cartoon studio despite the fact that their art looks like hot garbage and they never studied or focused enough in school. It's fucking atrocious.

Not feelsposter, but someone with absolutely no work ethic or drive. Allow me to explain:
Through my life, from entering school to leaving high-school, I never had to put serious effort into anything. I was sufficiently smart that I never had to study to get good grades, and could simply coast to success on that.

Those days are over. Now, every option ahead of me requires effort. The other kids had to study, they built up work ethic because the work wasn't easy. They picked a career and worked towards it by doing the required classes, I coasted on picking classes I could pass which weren't all useless, but had no coherent end in sight. I even did Physics. - After all, I'll decide on a career later.

Well now I'm in trouble, you see, because it turns out being smart isn't worth anything without work ethic, and it turns out those kids who started off dumb developed equal intellect alongside work ethic.

So you see why I might be a little upset. I was sold the illusion that because I was smart, I would go far, when in reality luck and work ethic are far more important. I got used to tackling problems with ease, and once I find one that cannot be tackled with ease I crumble or attempt to bypass it entirely.

But where do we go back to? At what point could I have changed anything? The path I took was the rational one given the circumstances I faced. There was no need to take hard courses, I wasn't so smart that the classwork bored me to the point of becoming disruptive, nor was I just smart enough for it to be difficult. Anything that would've built work ethic would've been irrational from my perspective at the time.

I'm not bragging. This is the opposite of bragging. My starting point of being slightly smart has doomed me because now I'm 20. While most other people have had around 15 years of building work ethic, I'm 15 years behind. Now I'm waking up to find the tortoise is nearing the finish line.

So don't be mad. Take pity and ignore.
>>
>>83694504
>20
mother fucker now is the time to start
>>
>>83694504
No, fucker! I'm gonna stay mad because that's essentially where I am, too. I'm 22, a chronically depressed college dropout, and all of my friends have multiple mini comics and webcomics while I find it difficult to muster up the courage to even try and make my own work because it keeps coming out like garbage. Almost all of my friends are at CAKE right now meeting people and having fun selling their tons and tons of books and prints while I'm sitting here too depressed to move. The only upside is that I don't often complain about it, and not moving means not being able to find anything to kill myself with.

That's why I get so upset when people, perhaps even younger than me, are shitposting on here when they could be here or on /ic/ LEARNING and MAKING THINGS even if they're bad, they could have SOMETHING. And then they could build on that and be good.
>>
>>83694892
>they could be here or on /ic/ LEARNING and MAKING THINGS
Without willpower? How could they do that without turning to the much easier option of posting here about
>Tfw you will never make a comic and just entertain the fantasy to avoid facing down the fact you're not ever going to do anything because doing things requires doing things.
>>
Are there any good fan webcomics about popular characters? Not necessarily superheroes but if you know of anything like that I'd be interested.

I start now a two week break from work, so I'll try to use that time to get this chapter done and start the new projects I've been practising for lately.
It seems since that I announced that I will shut down the site where I currently host this, people started visiting more often, wtf.

sorry i didn't finish the middle sentence there.

If you want to make glowy fire and stuff in photoshop just apply a gradient map to a black layer with the screen blending mode, then paint white with a pressure sensitive brush.
>>
>>83695888
Ok, i'll play with that.

I've wanted to do everything in Manga Studio 5 though and it's different with it's painting tools, so would it be the same method in that program too?

I have no idea. I don't even know if MS does gradient maps. Personally I'd use MS for drawing and Photoshop for coloring.

Hey /hyw/! Finally posting something to actually add content to the threads.

I finally started to come up with a few ideas that's boiled down to a bunch of short comics in the form of a series with a few characters of mine. I don't know how many stories I'll do but all of them will work on you understanding each character without relying on a sheet or anything like that. So here's a WIP of the first page of my first story: A "typical" day with a Justice League type deal with a leader who's between 7-11. They're digimon. Been on a huge 6 year digimon kick lately.

Any comments or concerns with the art?

How are you guys outlining/storyboarding your story before putting it on paper? Ive tried writing plot points down on a piece paper. I usually ask a question like "How does X happen?" and then I jot down whatever ideas I have under it, and then see how much I could connect it with the current story progress.

What are some questions I should be asking myself when making a story? And how do you guys outline?
>>
>>83699002
>ask yourself questions
thaaat is smart. i need to start doing that
>>
>>83699002
You write a script, right?
>>
>>83699002

My process kind of goes like this;

>Get ideas in my head for character/panel placement
>What are people saying on this page, the next, page, etc.
>Start to write a draft/outline of the dialogue
>Preliminary thumbnails
>Fine tuning outline, turning it more into a movie-ish script
>Finalize thumbnails
>Start working on pages

Some minor things I might change on the fly, if need be. People always say that your comic script drafts should work like movie scripts, and you should think about them in that way before going into the actual pages.

Story structure
Chapter structure
Scene script
Page outlines
Panel outlines
Rough draft (characters, object, speech placement)
Background draft
Final illustrations
Typesetting and sound effects

>What are some questions I should be asking myself when making a story?
Ask "Would I be interested in this story if I wasn't writing it?"
If you look at it with an outsiders perspective and it doesn't compel you, rewrite.

Jumping back and forth with my two projects today, plus, been doing some more light-hearted ''ghost writing'' for a friend, I guess. At least I assume I'll stay as a ghost.

Anyway, I've been trying to figure out a slowly progressing drug addiction story line for my occult detective comic. My main character uses drugs to tap into the supernatural realms of the world, but isn't always sure if what he sees is a hallucination or something actually supernatural. It's been really fun to write him spiraling down and being confused when his own reality just doesn't hold up so well, and occasionally stabs him in the back big-time.

Also I've been playing around with an idea of him learning to become a dad for his cousin's son. I really want to throw the cousin in prison, and drop the kid on my MC's lap for a while.

I'm just so in love with my characters and the writing overall right now. That's probably why I want to take a break so bad, so I wouldn't become too blind to my own writing mistakes.

How do you guys keep your comics in check? Take breaks? Show your comics around to get feedback? Tell me. I'm an ear.

>>

I almost always ask a couple friends to take a look at my pages because I'm a shutin neet whos shits all retarded, so I have a poor grasp on writing dialogue or regular people in general.

When drawing a page, or writing a larger scene, I generally complete a first draft before returning the next day to change things I was blind to the day before. I don't take extended breaks.

Don't really care about my characters beyond their roles in the story, I'm more of an atmosphere and environments guy.

It's not that late come on man. All you need to do is a couple of pictures and a brief synopsis. You focus too much on avoiding rejection instead of having the submission be the goal itself. I'm submitting mine today, and we finished most of the submission during the past couple of days. The point is to submit your work to many places all the time and improve in the art of pitching. Also creating the pitch document helps to clarify the story for yourself as well.
>>
>>83711978
it's too late now to submit. They've received too many and are discarding the rest. I have insider information, so anyone still working on it is wasting their time now.
