>Bleeding Cool Bestseller List – 29th May 2016 – Watchmen Beats Nazis

>And, yes, a certain DC Universe Rebirth topped the list. But it was a very strong week for sales all around, anything in the top seven could have made the number one in a normal week.

1. DC Universe Rebirth #1
2. Justice League #50
3. Star Wars # 19
4. Captain America: Steve Rogers #1
5. Superman #52
6. Spider-Man/Deadpool #5
7. Scooby Doo Apocalypse #1
8. Doctor Strange #8
9. Obi-Wan Kenobi #5
10. Flash #52

>Wow, Rebirth is one for the record books here. We sold more copies of it than any other comic in our history of being open. Justice League 50 while not coming through with the Joker’s secret I.D. as it was said it would still blew out the door. Star Wars still a hot seller. Hopefully Marvel won’t cancel that too after Darth Vader. Captain America Steve Rogers 1 didn’t blow out the doors. Reaction to the big reveal was “meh”. One of the best sales days we have ever had. Hoping we have ordered enough for next week’s Rebirth first issues.
>>
>>83284198
>Six DC’s in the top ten for us this week, with Rebirth scoring more than twice as many copies sold as the second-place title. In fact, Rebirth saw more Day One sales than Star Wars #1 saw when it premiered, making it our highest-selling-first-day book of the 21st Century! Advance word about the wretchedness that is Captain America: Steve Rogers #1 led to mass defections on this issue: half of those who had asked that it be held for them declined to buy it, complaining uniformly that they won’t give money to a book that depicts Steve Rogers so badly. Score a BIG win for DC this week, while Marvel managed to alienate readers in a major way.

>I would guess that the #1 book all around was Rebirth #1 since it crushed it for two days straight. Scooby and Justice league for a nice Trinity though as they took the top spots all selling well past the century mark. Cap did well due to the hype given via the internet and actually made it in the century club along with Star Wars for Marvel.
>>
Lmao marvel
>>
You have to note that this is a small sample size, but of course DC's big event was going to win over a book that didn't have any hype until it was released. Civil War 2 #0 is what might beat DC as far as the whole month is concerned.

Wow, DC finally managed to get 5 titles into the top 10. It only took walking back the Nu52, incorporating Watchmen, and killing Superman all in the same week.

Bravo DC! You finally realized what didn't work all these, and you slowly get back on track. Meanwhile the House of Non Ideas, continues being completely derailed, searching to be appealing only to SJW's, alienating their old time readers.

Marvel got more publicity from outside the comics fandom, to the point where people here were complaining that Marvel had unfairly upstaged DC, so it's a tradeoff.
I like what they're doing with Rebirth though, so I'm glad it's working out for them.
>>
>>83284479
That's only because it's just reporting what a small sample of comic shops were actually selling to customers, as opposed to the top 100 everyone uses, which is more about preorders (and requires looking over several months).

That was never going to show itself in the May sales. You might see secondary orders put up a significant number in June though, but Rebirth already sold out at Diamond and is getting a second printing so it still might beat Cap #1 next month too.
>>
Would DC even make any money on Rebirth anyway? At 80 pages for $2.99 it seems more like an ad that they're paying for than an event that they could get a profit on.
>>
Just want to see Marvels "Piss them off gets us sales" approach fail.

It'll probably have high orders in the May chart because retailers order stuff ahead of time.

If what the retailers that Rich talked to is any indication it seems like Rebirth is selling well while Cap is hit or miss at stores.

I think on Comics Beat, Brian Hibbs (who does that Tilting at Windmills column and Savage Critics and runs two comic shops) said his stores sold 4 times the number of copies of Rebirth than they did of Captain America.

Arguably this has a better idea of how sales are at shops rather than the Diamond lists, because the Diamond lists are all about preorders, and most of the sales of a new comic are usually during the week it's out.

Not gonna happen, at worst he'll just be inoffensively mediocre, but compared to the other Batbooks we'll still like him.

>Seriously, what the fuck where they actually thinking?
They were thinking people would get mad, there would be a small controversy, and sales would go up.

>His mission is to further the goals and beliefs of Hydra," explained Brevoort. "If that involves taking down the Marvel universe, sure. (But) it may not be as simple as that. It’s not like he’s exchanged his white hat for a black hat — it’s a green hat. We knew it would be like slapping people in the face. The idea of Captain America means something very primal and very strong to the people of this nation, and they have a very visceral reaction when you get to something like that. You want people to feel and react to your story. So far, so good."

It's creeping up comixology's charts but we'll have to see in a few months if this controversy helped.
>>
>>83285064
Scooby Doo was a really decent and intriguing elseworlds story. It's good to see something different than the typical cape comics being appreciated for once.

DC did give out a few thousand issues through the Flash and Arrow TV twitters that might have inflated it (not sure if fully free copies would affect CMX's charts?), but JL 50 being up there too probably tells you how much paid interest there is.

They are probably underrating Johns' ability of using past continuity it in an accessible way. Like they see all the references and think a new reader will be overwhelmed. And Johns isn't a particularly skilled nor inventive writer or anything, but this is something he's good at. The only thing I think that might be difficult is the JSA hint but it's clear enough for a newbie to get "this old guy was a hero that people forgot, his heroic ramblings got him put into a nursing home, and he needs to get his genie back to help people remember" out of the scene immediately which is enough I think.

I expect it to be steep given the sales of Sam Wilson by the same author. I dropped the latter due to this page (attached) and didn't even pick up Cap because I expected more of the same.

And understand that I watch The Daily Show, Last Week Tonight, and Full Frontal so I really SHOULD be his target audience; but he's so fucking ham-fisted and cringeworthy with his Fox baiting. You might be too young to recall but back in the day (1992ish) DC did a "Death of Superman" event. This wasn't even the FIRST TIME they'd "killed" him and, clearly, they weren't going to LEAVE him dead ... but John Q Public didn't know that. Shit went fucking MENTAL. I'm talking interviews on The Nightly News and News Papers covering this shit and generally Casuals losing their shit over those bastards killing an American Institution and ... clearly non of these morons had ever read a fucking comic.

Same thing happened when they "killed Robin" in the 80's and I remember my older brother rolling his eyes at my dad and explaining that this was NOT ROBIN (Dick) who was Nightwing by then but his replacement (Jason) to which my dad said, "... oh."

I expect this has the potential to work out as well as Superior Spiderman (where Pete got mindswapped with Doc Oc for 33 issues); as that also got people up in arms (but sold well).

It might also go the way of Avenger's Arena/Avengers Undercover which also ran on hatereading but didn't have nearly the staying power.

Honestly I'm betting on the latter: they JUST de-aged Old Cap so jumping right in with "This is not your father's Captain America" is likely going to piss off people who were waiting for him to come back.

there is a legit reason the price is going up. there's gonna be a new cover and they're gonna print it with a spine, so it's closer to book format like their 100-page specials.
>>
>>83290181
Jason Aaron is a big name, unfortunately.
>>
>4. Captain America: Steve Rogers #1

I guess the clickbait didn't work
>>
>>83290372

People didn't know it was going to be clickbait until they read the issue though. It's not like Marvel advertised Captain Hydra ahead of time.
>>
>>83290135
Hydra been had nazi connections. Hilarious of Marvel to go "ITS ONLY MOVIE FANS WHO THINK THAT" when thats who they're shamelessly trying to pander to
>>
Last month Star Wars #18 shipped 98,880 copies so what this list shows is that Hydra Steve didn't even break 100,000. Justice League and Rebirth definitely did.
>>
>>83290685
This is a small sample size of shops that OP posted data from. I think Cap breaks 100k, even Gwenpool did and it seems doomed to be a stealth mini from the start.
>>
>>83284198
Holy shit, Dr. Strange is a top-ten seller?
>>
>>83290685
>a book about a beloved hero returning on the same month as his movie came out won't break 100k
lol

Marvel has the variants movie #1 thing down, anon. It'll be more like 200k, probably more.
>>
>>83290966
Only for the week. It does about as well as Obi Wan.
>>
>>83286053
Is it actually this consistent? I might grab a few trades
>>
>>83291212
After a weak first issue, Kelly's return to Spider-Man and Deadpool has been solid, yeah.
>>
>>83284198
Glad Rebirth (and JL) beat that click-bait Cap shit. Maybe now Marvel will learn that SHOCKING twists whose sole purpose is to drum up controversy is a fucking dumb idea.

Also really happy Scooby Apocalypse seems to have sold well, I thought it was a solid first issue.

Have hard numbers come out for Future Quest #1?
>>
What're you guys looking forward to in terms of Rebirth titles? Thinking of moving some things in my pull list around
Preferably I'd like to help out with titles that get lower sales

>No Future Quest
GOD FUCKING DAMNIT FAMPAIS.
>>
>>83291714
I'm thinking Blue Beetle and Gotham Academy will be the series that get lower sales. Since DC seem to be starting pretty safe with their initial Rebirth lineup (lot's of Supes and Bats) most titles should do ok.
>>
>>83291946
Future Quest came out last week. No way was it going to crack top 10 in it's second week.
>>
>>83286959
what, did you misquote?

>>83286831
If that's the case I'd still buy it, $6 for 80 Pages with improved printing quality is still to good
>>
>>83291976
ah yeah, didn't realize this wasn't supposed to be Diamond Sales

That he's nothing but a Marvel shill. Literally every single article he does that even has the most tangential link to DC has a negative spin on it. Conversly every Marvel article he does has a positive one
>Cap #!1 sold waaaaaay less than Rebirth
>Here's 10 reasons why that's actually a good thing
>Also DC is Hitler
>>
>>83294100
But all of Rich's sources are at DC and he has virtually nothing at Marvel.
>>
>>83292417
It's hilarious reading Marveldrones tweet
>We need to stop focusing on Cap and talk about Rebirth's half assedness instead!
Marvel actually did DC a favor by taking the heat off them for once.

Except the movies and Arrow. And I suppose also Supergirl getting booted to cable.

But yeah, this is a pretty good string of wins for them. All hail lord Geoff, long may he reign.
>>
>>83295158

Coupled with the linked BC article it's more about reinforcing the general trend that actual comic readers don't seem to really give a shit about Cap #1 or Civil War II Electric Boogaloo

I'll be pulling my favourite heroes, Flash and Aquaman. So that is Flash, Aquaman and Titans.

I'll be pulling my favourite artist, which means Trinity by Manapul.

I'll be pulling quality writers, so that means Rucka WW and King Bats.

I'm really getting into Superman right now, but with so many options I'll probably trade wait the best options. I'll probably trade wait JL too.

>TLDR
Wonder Woman
Flash
Aquaman
Titans
Batman
Trinity
>>
Rebirth is the first floppy I've bought in ages.
I don't care WHY DC did it, but doing it pandered directly to me and by god it worked.
>>
>>83296056
First floppy I ever pulled, I've been purely a pirate who then buys the trades that I like the most.

I got my brother to get this when the LCS opened and I'm lucky he did because it sold out that day.
>>
>>83291714

>immediately going on my pull-list

Batman
Titans
Blue Beetle
Wonder Woman

>probably going to pirate the first couple issues to see if I like it or not

Aquaman
Superwoman
Supergirl
Green Arrow
Flash
Trinity
>>
>>83296145
>Aquaman
You can read #50-52 or so to get a feel for Aqua Abnett.
>>
>>83284479

DC doesn't have Star Wars and an endless supply of #1 issues.
>>

I'm going to read the first 3 issues of everything because it's freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
>>
>>83296239

>>
>>83296253
New Super-Man, Beetlemania and Wonder Woman.

The rest look either mediocre or like shit to be honest with you family.

>>
>>83296569
Ha, that reminds me of an article from a few days ago
>Coates’s first issue sold 300,000 copies according to Marvel – thus far the bestselling comic of 2016 – and Alonso is enthusiastic about future issues and collected editions. The company approached Coates about writing for Marvel on the advice of editor Sana Amanat.

>“We met and she suggested it and I said I was a huge Spider-man fan as a kid, but they already had plans there,” Coates says. “And then they said they needed a new Black Panther writer and I was like ‘Ohh!’ I don’t know, how can you be closed to that? I had to figure something out in terms of what the arc would be and everything, constructed some beats as to how it would look.”

Marvel's *still* doing it.
>>
>>83296705
Axel Alonso was the editor for the Hudlin BP. Of course they are still doing the Social Justice hires. But Coates BP is still pretty good.
>>
>>83296862
It's not so much social justice hires as it is "Marvel refuses to let black writers write anything other than black books." Priest quit because of it, and now they have this and David Walker on Luke Cage and Nighthawk.
>>
>>83296699

It's Priest, AND he specifically picked the character out of anything else he could've done with DC, so he probably has a pretty good idea in mind.
>>
>>83297016
Like I said, I will try everything but I have no confidence in most things. If Priest is so good why did he chose such a shitty character?
>>
>>83297143
He gets more freedom.
>>
>>83297143
No such thing as shitty characters family, just shitty writers.
