The Mello/Near arc in the manga is fantastic. The anime really does butcher it, and then the Rewrites are so unkind to them that they almost entirely eliminate the need for Mello at all.

While it's great to actually have content/discussion surrounding the object of my affections now, it's also jarring to see how many people I have to share him with (not to mention so many people going "hurr hurr I'm kin with this character, I'm literally his spiritual reincarnation"). Near's following is small but also dedicated and respectable.
I'm going to have to go crack open my old computer and see if I can recover my old Death Note folders. I princely had a couple hundred Near pics from various Japanese fan sites when it was at its peak

I followed the manga while it was still ongoing, and back then people already disliked Mello and Near. Most of them were "Kira was right!" egdelords who were angry their hero was getting BTFO by a cute kid, though, so you couldn't exactly expect them to have taste.
