surnatural/dangerous, with no clear background, or just androgynous looking ?

I know it did, unfortunately. I really miss that 80s-90s style...
Some that come to mind to me are Ageha from Basara (not the videogames, the 90s manga), Griffith from Berserk, Rosiel from Angel Sanctuary and D from the Vampire Hunter D series. Maybe he's more debatable but I thought of Mikage from Utena could count too.
I can definitely see it being a strong nineties character trait.

The medicine seller in Mononoke is this type, his appearance is supposed to unusual. Yoshitaka Amano's art and films by Yoshiaki Kawajiri are probably up your alley and possibly "narcissist" character types.
a lot of kawajiri movies have androgynous or gay characters in them.

I agree that Mikage most definitely fits the bill. And he is one of my all time favorite characters, too.

I'd say amane nishiki from blazblue fits the bill.
The film darkside blues is one of the most oddly put together anime I've seen.
Amongst other things it has a lanky teenage pretty boy named katari who's never explained. He implied to be developing supernatural powers which are never explained and has connection to another supernatural character which is also unexplained.
Also the last frame of the movie is him with a sinister look that's also never explained.
The whole film is a mindfuck.It's like david lynch directed a seinen anime.
